A 1-W, 30-ghz, CPW Amplifier for ACTS Small Terminal Uplink
The progress is described of the development of a 1 W, 30 GHz, coplanar waveguide (CPW) amplifier for the Advanced Communication Technology Satellite (ACTS)Small Terminal Uplink. The amplifier is based on Texas Instruments' monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) amplifiers; a three stage, low power amplifier, and a single stage, high power amplifier. The amplifiers have a power output of 190 mW and 0.710 W, gain of 23 and 4.2 dB, and efficiencies of 30.2 and 24 percent for the three stage and one stage amplifiers, respectively. The chips are to be combined via a CPW power divider/combiner circuit to yield the desired 1 W of output power
Molecular signatures of natural selection for polymorphic genes of the human dopaminergic and serotonergic systems: A review
A large body of research has examined the behavioral and mental health consequences of polymorphisms in genes of the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems. Along with this, there has been considerable interest in the possibility that these polymorphisms have developed and/or been maintained due to the action of natural selection. Episodes of natural selection on a gene are expected to leave molecular âfootprintsâ in the DNA sequences of the gene and adjacent genomic regions. Here we review the research literature investigating molecular signals of selection for genes of the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems. The gene SLC6A4, which codes for a serotonin transport protein, was the one gene for which there was consistent support from multiple studies for a selective episode. Positive selection on SLC6A4 appears to have been initiated ⌠20â25,000 years ago in east Asia and possibly in Europe. There are scattered reports of molecular signals of selection for other neurotransmitter genes, but these have generally failed at replication across studies. In spite of speculation in the literature about selection on these genes, current evidence from population genomic analyses supports selectively neutral processes, such as genetic drift and population dynamics, as the principal drivers of recent evolution in dopaminergic and serotonergic genes other than SLC6A4
Killing vectors in asymptotically flat space-times: I. Asymptotically translational Killing vectors and the rigid positive energy theorem
We study Killing vector fields in asymptotically flat space-times. We prove
the following result, implicitly assumed in the uniqueness theory of stationary
black holes. If the conditions of the rigidity part of the positive energy
theorem are met, then in such space-times there are no asymptotically null
Killing vector fields except if the initial data set can be embedded in
Minkowski space-time. We also give a proof of the non-existence of non-singular
(in an appropriate sense) asymptotically flat space-times which satisfy an
energy condition and which have a null ADM four-momentum, under conditions
weaker than previously considered.Comment: 30 page
Relativistic Acoustic Geometry
Sound wave propagation in a relativistic perfect fluid with a non-homogeneous
isentropic flow is studied in terms of acoustic geometry. The sound wave
equation turns out to be equivalent to the equation of motion for a massless
scalar field propagating in a curved space-time geometry. The geometry is
described by the acoustic metric tensor that depends locally on the equation of
state and the four-velocity of the fluid. For a relativistic supersonic flow in
curved space-time the ergosphere and acoustic horizon may be defined in a way
analogous the non-relativistic case. A general-relativistic expression for the
acoustic analog of surface gravity has been found.Comment: 14 pages, LaTe
Microwave characterization of slotline on high resistivity silicon for antenna feed network
Conventional silicon wafers have low resistivity and consequently unacceptably high value of dielectric attenuation constant. Microwave circuits for phased array antenna systems fabricated on these wafers therefore have low efficiency. By choosing a silicon substrate with sufficiently high resistivity it is possible to make the dielectric attenuation constant of the interconnecting microwave transmission lines approach those of GaAs or InP. In order for this to be possible, the transmission lines must be characterized. In this presentation, the effective dielectric constant (epsilon sub eff) and attenuation constant (alpha) of a slotline on high resistivity (5000 to 10 000 ohm-cm) silicon wafer will be discussed. The epsilon sub eff and alpha are determined from the measured resonant frequencies and the corresponding insertion loss of a slotline ring resonator. The results for slotline will be compared with microstrip line and coplanar waveguide

Effect of alirocumab on lipids and lipoproteins in individuals with metabolic syndrome without diabetes: Pooled data from 10 phase 3 trials.
AimsThis analysis assessed the efficacy and safety of alirocumab, a proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitor, in patients with or without metabolic syndrome (MetS) using pooled data from 10 phase 3 ODYSSEY trials.Materials and methodsData from 4983 randomized patients (1940 with MetS; 1642 with diabetes excluded) were assessed in subgroups by MetS status. Efficacy data were analysed in 4 pools per study design: 2 placebo-controlled pools (1 using alirocumab 150 mg every 2 weeks [Q2W], 1 using 75/150 mg Q2W) with background statin, and 2 ezetimibe-controlled pools (both alirocumab 75/150 mg Q2W), 1 with and 1 without background statin. Alirocumab 75/150 mg indicates possible dose increase from 75 to 150 mg at Week 12 based on Week 8 LDL-C.ResultsLDL-C percentage reduction from baseline at Week 24 with alirocumab was 63.9% (MetS) and 56.8% (non-MetS) in the pool of alirocumab 150 mg Q2W, and 42.2% to 52.2% (MetS) and 45.0% to 52.6% (non-MetS) in 3 pools using 75/150 mg Q2W. Levels of other lipid and lipoprotein parameters were also improved with alirocumab treatment, including apolipoprotein B, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), lipoprotein(a) and HDL-C. Overall, the percentage change at Week 24 in LDL-C and other lipids and lipoproteins did not vary by MetS status. Adverse event rates were generally similar between treatment groups, regardless of MetS status; injection-site reactions occurred more frequently in alirocumab vs control groups.ConclusionsAcross study pools, alirocumab-associated reductions in LDL-C, apolipoprotein B, and non-HDL-C were significant vs control, and did not vary by MetS status
NUT-Charged Black Holes in Gauss-Bonnet Gravity
We investigate the existence of Taub-NUT/bolt solutions in Gauss-Bonnet
gravity and obtain the general form of these solutions in dimensions. We
find that for all non-extremal NUT solutions of Einstein gravity having no
curvature singularity at , there exist NUT solutions in Gauss-Bonnet
gravity that contain these solutions in the limit that the Gauss-Bonnet
parameter goes to zero. Furthermore there are no NUT solutions in
Gauss-Bonnet gravity that yield non-extremal NUT solutions to Einstein gravity
having a curvature singularity at in the limit . Indeed,
we have non-extreme NUT solutions in dimensions with non-trivial
fibration only when the -dimensional base space is chosen to be
. We also find that the Gauss-Bonnet gravity has extremal NUT
solutions whenever the base space is a product of 2-torii with at most a
2-dimensional factor space of positive curvature. Indeed, when the base space
has at most one positively curved two dimensional space as one of its factor
spaces, then Gauss-Bonnet gravity admits extreme NUT solutions, even though
there a curvature singularity exists at . We also find that one can have
bolt solutions in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with any base space with factor spaces
of zero or positive constant curvature. The only case for which one does not
have bolt solutions is in the absence of a cosmological term with zero
