Learning Health System In A Senior Retirement Community: A Platform To Promote Implementation Research

    Get PDF
Introduction: In an effort to develop a Learning Health System (LHS) for a healthy ageing society, this study launched an Internet of Things (IoT) platform in a senior residential community to continuously generate behavior logs. Methods: Considering that older adults experience difficulties in technology adaptation and declined information processing abilities, senior residents only needed to carry around a card sized beacon which was the tracking device. Participant recruitment took place in a continuing care retirement community. Individual feedback was obtained quarterly. Results: During the first 16 months, 111 residents, aged 67 to 97 years, joined the program, and nearly 90% of them were consistently monitored in their everyday lives. Participants’ average daily walking distance was slightly less than 1 km. The average time spent socializing was between 1 to 1.5 hours per day. Conclusion: The IoT platform offers the possibility of extending the target population and scope of data, as well as incorporating experimental study designs. It is expected that factors affecting older people’s everyday lives and their consequences on health outcomes are continuously studied, learned from and improved

Neutrino Opacities in Neutron Stars with Kaon Condensates

The neutrino mean free paths in hot neutron-star matter are obtained in the presence of kaon condensates. The kaon-induced neutrino absorption process, which is allowed only in the presence of kaon condensates, is considered for both nondegenerate and degenerate neutrinos. The neutrino mean free path due to this process is compared with that for the neutrino-nucleon scattering. While the mean free path for the kaon-induced neutrino absorption process is shown to be shorter than the ordinary two-nucleon absorption process by several orders of magnitude when temperature is not very high, the neutrino-nucleon scattering process has still a dominant contribution to the neutrino opacity. Thus, the kaon-induced neutrino absorption process has a minor effect on the thermal and dynamical evolution of protoneutron stars.Comment: 35 pages, 4 figure

Phenotypical and Functional Analysis of Intraepithelial Lymphocytes from Small Intestine of Mice in Oral Tolerance

In this work, we evaluated the effects of administration of OVA on phenotype and function of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) from small intestine of transgenic (TGN) DO11.10 and wild-type BALB/c mice. While the small intestines from BALB/c presented a well preserved structure, those from TGN showed an inflamed aspect. The ingestion of OVA induced a reduction in the number of IELs in small intestines of TGN, but it did not change the frequencies of CD8+ and CD4+ T-cell subsets. Administration of OVA via oral + ip increased the frequency of CD103+ cells in CD4+ T-cell subset in IELs of both BALB/c and TGN mice and elevated its expression in CD8β+ T-cell subset in IELs of TGN. The frequency of Foxp3+ cells increased in all subsets in IELs of BALB/c treated with OVA; in IELs of TGN, it increased only in CD25+ subset. IELs from BALB/c tolerant mice had lower expression of all cytokines studied, whereas those from TGN showed high expression of inflammatory cytokines, especially of IFN-γ, TGF-β, and TNF-α. Overall, our results suggest that the inability of TGN to become tolerant may be related to disorganization and altered proportions of inflammatory/regulatory T cells in its intestinal mucosa

AIMS: To investigate the effect of tadalafil on bladder blood flow and lower urinary tract function in a rat model of diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied female Sprague-Dawley rats and induced diabetes in some using a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. We divided the rats into nondiabetes (ND), diabetes (D), and diabetes with tadalafil (DT) groups. The rats were raised for an additional 7 weeks after diabetes induction. The DT group received oral tadalafil (2 mg/kg/day) for 7 days before the experiments. At 7 weeks after diabetes induction, we performed cystometry, resected the bladders for immunohistochemistry (hypoxia-inducible factor-1α [HIF-1α] and 8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine [8-OHdG] staining), and measured bladder blood supply using a laser blood flow meter. RESULTS: The opening pressure, when the urethra opens and urine flow starts, was significantly lower in the DT group than in the D group (24.9 ± 5.9 vs 43.6 ± 12.3 cmH2 O). The inter-contraction interval was significantly longer in the D group than in the ND and DT groups (1566.2 ± 168.7 vs 702.9 ± 165.2 and 787.4 ± 148.8 s). Immunohistochemistry showed positive staining of the urothelial layer for both HIF-1α and 8-OHdG in the D group, but not in the ND or DT groups. Bladder blood flow was significantly lower in the D group than in the ND or DT groups. CONCLUSIONS: Tadalafil improves bladder blood supply and lower urinary tract function in diabetic rats. Tadalafil may be a promising drug that restores lower urinary tract dysfunction in the early phase of diabetes.博士(医学)・甲第677号・平成30年3月15日© 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.This is the peer reviewed version of the following article: "http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/nau.23372", which has been published in final form at [Link to final article using the DOI]. The geomorphology, color, and thermal properties of Ryugu: Implications for parent-body processes

    Get PDF
The near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid 162173 Ryugu is thought to have been produced from a parent body that contained water ice and organic molecules. The Hayabusa2 spacecraft has obtained global multi-color images of Ryugu. Geomorphological features present include a circum-equatorial ridge, east/west dichotomy, high boulder abundances across the entire surface, and impact craters. Age estimates from the craters indicate a resurfacing age of ≲ 106 years for the top 1-meter layer. Ryugu is among the darkest known bodies in the Solar System. The high abundance and spectral properties of boulders are consistent with moderately dehydrated materials, analogous to thermally metamorphosed meteorites found on Earth. The general uniformity in color across Ryugu’s surface supports partial dehydration due to internal heating of the asteroid’s parent body.Additional co-authors: N Namiki, S Tanaka, Y Iijima, K Yoshioka, M Hayakawa, Y Cho, M Matsuoka, N Hirata, N Hirata, H Miyamoto, D Domingue, M Hirabayashi, T Nakamura, T Hiroi, T Michikami, P Michel, R-L Ballouz, O S Barnouin, C M Ernst, S E Schröder, H Kikuchi, R Hemmi, G Komatsu, T Fukuhara, M Taguchi, T Arai, H Senshu, H Demura, Y Ogawa, Y Shimaki, T Sekiguchi, T G Müller, T Mizuno, H Noda, K Matsumoto, R Yamada, Y Ishihara, H Ikeda, H Araki, K Yamamoto, S Abe, F Yoshida, A Higuchi, S Sasaki, S Oshigami, S Tsuruta, K Asari, S Tazawa, M Shizugami, J Kimura, T Otsubo, H Yabuta, S Hasegawa, M Ishiguro, S Tachibana, E Palmer, R Gaskell, L Le Corre, R Jaumann, K Otto, N Schmitz, P A Abell, M A Barucci, M E Zolensky, F Vilas, F Thuillet, C Sugimoto, N Takaki, Y Suzuki, H Kamiyoshihara, M Okada, K Nagata, M Fujimoto, M Yoshikawa, Y Yamamoto, K Shirai, R Noguchi, N Ogawa, F Terui, S Kikuchi, T Yamaguchi, Y Oki, Y Takao, H Takeuchi, G Ono, Y Mimasu, K Yoshikawa, T Takahashi, Y Takei, A Fujii, C Hirose, S Nakazawa, S Hosoda, O Mori, T Shimada, S Soldini, T Iwata, M Abe, H Yano, R Tsukizaki, M Ozaki, K Nishiyama, T Saiki, S Watanabe, Y Tsud

Many wild plants of the Cerrado bioma are used as medicinal plants. The pequi (Caryocar brasiliensis) is representative of those equipped with molluscicidal action against schistosomiasis. This paper sets out to verify the toxic action of pequi fractions in other aquatic animals before they are used in rivers or lakes. Analysis were made of the alterations to the mitotic index of epithelia cells in the gills of guppy (Poecilia vivipara) exposed to ethyl-acetate fraction of leaf pequi and bark. Animals exposed to ethyl-acetate fraction (leaf), no significant change was observed in the mitotic index when compared with the control group, whereas in fish exposed to ethyl-acetate fraction (bark) we detected an increase in mitotic index of the epithelia cells in two regions of the branchial filaments. Thus, ethyl-acetate fractions (leaf) could be used against schistosomiasis, given their high efficacy and low action as piscicide.Várias plantas nativas do bioma Cerrado são utilizadas como plantas medicinais. Dentre elas, o pequi possuí ação moluscicida utilizada no combate a esquistossomose.
