    Ligand exchange on CdSe nanoplatelets for the solar light sensitization of TiO2 and ZnO nanorod arrays

    In quantum dot (QD) solar cells, the ex situ sensitization of wide band gap semiconductors (WBSCs) makes it possible to control the shape and the passivation of the nanosized sensitizer. Hence, ex situ techniques can be used to investigate how the band gap of the sensitizers affects the performance of quantum dot solar cells. The latter can be precisely controlled in 1D confined structures such as quasi-2D nanoplatelets (NPLs), the thickness of which is defined with an atomic precision. In this work, we tested and thoroughly characterized the attachment of 7, 9 and 11 monolayers thick CdSe NPLs (as well as QDs for the sake of comparison) to ZnO and to TiO2 nanorods. A crucial point of the ex situ techniques is the choice of bifunctional ligands that link the nanosized sensitizers to the WBSCs. Besides the well-known mercaptopropionic acid, we also studied two ‘atomic linkers’ (OH− and SH−) to minimize the distance between the sensitizer and the oxide. The as-prepared systems have been analyzed by UV/VIS absorption and Raman spectroscopy. Among them, SH− was found to be the most versatile linker that enabled the efficient attachment of all types of CdSe nanocrystals on ZnO and TiO2 nanorods.Fil: Szemjonov, A..     Biocidal Activity of Phyto-Derivative Products Used on Phototrophic Biofilms Growing on Stone Surfaces of the Domus Aurea in Rome (Italy)

    Hypogean or enclosed monuments are important cultural heritage sites that can suffer biodegradation. Many of the stone walls of the prestigious Domus Aurea are overwhelmed by dense biofilms and so need intervention. Room 93 was chosen as a study site with the aim to test the efficacy of phyto-derivatives as new biocides. Laboratory studies were performed comparing the effects of liquorice leaf extract (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.), lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) and a combination of both. In situ studies were also performed to test the effect of liquorice. The results were compared with those of the commonly used synthetic biocide benzalkonium chloride. The effects on the biofilms were assessed by microscopy along with chlorophyll fluorescence analysis. The phototrophs in the biofilms were identified morphologically, while the heterotrophs were identified with culture analysis and 16S gene sequencing. Results showed that the mixed solution liquorice/lavender was the most effective in inhibiting the photosynthetic activities of biofilms in the laboratory tests; while, in situ, the effect of liquorice was particularly encouraging as an efficient and low-invasive biocide. The results demonstrate a high potential biocidal efficacy of the phyto-derivatives, but also highlight the need to develop an efficient application regime

    Chandra Detections of Two Quiescent Black Hole X-Ray Transients

    Using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, we have detected the black hole transients V4641 Sgr and XTE J1859+226 in their low luminosity, quiescent states. The 0.3-8 keV luminosities are (4.0^(+3.3)_(-2.4))E31 (d/7 kpc)^2 erg/s and (4.2^(+4.8)_(-2.2))E31 (d/11 kpc)^2 erg/s for V4641 Sgr and XTE J1859+226, respectively. With the addition of these 2 systems, 14 out of the 15 transients with confirmed black holes (via compact object mass measurements) now have measured quiescent luminosities or sensitive upper limits. The only exception is GRS 1915+105, which has not been in quiescence since its discovery in 1992. The luminosities for V4641 Sgr and XTE J1859+226 are consistent with the median luminosity of 2E31 erg/s for the systems with previous detections. Our analysis suggests that the quiescent X-ray spectrum of V4641 Sgr is harder than for the other systems in this group, but, due to the low statistical quality of the spectrum, it is not clear if V4641 Sgr is intrinsically hard or if the column density is higher than the interstellar value. Focusing on V4641 Sgr, we compare our results to theoretical models for X-ray emission from black holes in quiescence. Also, we obtain precise X-ray positions for V4641 Sgr and XTE J1859+226 via cross-correlation of the X-ray sources detected near our targets with IR sources in the 2 Micron All-Sky Survey catalog.Comment: 4 pages, Accepted by ApJ Letter

    A bacterial formula with native strains as alternative to chemical fertiliser for tomato crop

    Global tomato productivity is threatened by biotic and abiotic stressors. To support and guarantee an adequate yield of tomato crops, agricultural practices have been based on the intensive use of fertilisers with negative impacts on the environment. This study presents a simple and effective strategy of functional bioaugmentation, suitable for different varieties, to replace chemical fertilisation. A tailored microbial formula composed by eight indigenous strains (including the genera Delftia, Pseudomonas, Paenarthrobacter, Phyllobacterium, Bacillus, and Acinetobacter) was developed as biofertilizer. Strains were selected from native soil for their plant growth-promoting (PGP) functions, and combined respecting the taxonomic composition of the original PGP heterotrophic community structure. The effect of the bio-fertilisation vs chemical fertilisation was tested in three successive field trials in the company greenhouse, with different tomato varieties (Camone, Oblungo, Cherry). When bio-fertilisation was applied only twice during the Camone's life cycle, tomato yield was significantly reduced (0.8 vs 2.1 kg per plant, p = 0.0003). However, monthly inoculation during plant growth led to a fruit yield comparable to that obtained with chemical fertilisers (about 1.5 kg per plant for Oblungo, and about 2 kg per plant for Cherry variety, p = 0.9999). Bio-fertilization did not significantly affect plant height; only during the last growing period of the Cherry variety, a significantly higher average plant height (p < 0.0001) was observed with chemical fertiliser. The results indicate that a knowledge-based bacterial formula and monthly inoculation during the plant growth can be a successful bio-fertilisation strategy. These findings may pave the way towards more sustainable tomato production, since farming practices are becoming increasingly crucial, in accordance with Agenda 2030 and the UE "Farm to Fork" strategy.[GRAPHICS]

    Synthesis and Photophysical Investigation of Tetraazaporphyrin Substituted with Aggregation‐Induced Emission (AIE) Active Moieties

    The synthesis and characterization of free-base and ZnII tetraazaporphyrins with tetraphenylethylene (TPE) or diphenylphenanthrene (DPP) moieties that are known to be aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active is reported. The optical spectra contain the characteristic Q and B absorption bands of Gouterman's four-orbital model and a broad envelope of weaker charge-transfer bands in the 450–600 nm region. The observed fluorescence emission lies beyond 670 nm and originates exclusively from the decay of the S1 state of the macrocycle, regardless of the excitation wavelength used. Theoretical calculations provide further evidence of strong electronic communication between the peripheral TPE or DPP moieties and the central ring. The ZnII complexes were found to have relatively high singlet-oxygen quantum yields

    COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy in Italy: Predictors of Acceptance, Fence Sitting and Refusal of the COVID-19 Vaccination

    Background: The hesitancy in taking the COVID-19 vaccine is a global challenge. The need to identify predictors of COVID-19 vaccine reluctance is critical. Our objectives were to evaluate sociodemographic, psychological, and behavioral factors, as well as attitudes and beliefs that influence COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy in the general population of Italy. Methods: A total of 2,015 people were assessed in two waves (March, April and May, 2021). Participants were divided into three groups: (1) individuals who accepted the vaccination (“accepters”); (2) individuals who refused the vaccination (“rejecters”); and (3) individuals who were uncertain about their attitudes toward the vaccination (“fence sitters”). Group comparisons were performed using ANOVA, the Kruskal-Wallis test and chi-square tests. The strength of the association between the groups and the participants' characteristics was analyzed using a series of multinomial logistic regression models with bootstrap internal validation (one for each factor). Results: The “fence sitters” group, when compared to the others, included individuals of younger age, lower educational level, and worsening economic situation in the previous 3 months. After controlling for sociodemographic factors, the following features emerged as the main risk factors for being “fence sitters” (compared with vaccine “accepters”): reporting lower levels of protective behaviors, trust in institutions and informational sources, frequency of use of informational sources, agreement with restrictions and higher conspirative mentality. Higher levels of COVID-19 perceived risk, trust in institutions and informational sources, frequency of use of informational sources, agreement with restrictions and protective behaviors were associated with a higher likelihood of becoming “fence sitters” rather than vaccine “rejecters.” Conclusions: The “fence sitters” profile revealed by this study is intriguing and should be the focus of public programmes aimed at improving adherence to the COVID-19 vaccination campaign

    The interplay of perceived risks and benefits in deciding to become vaccinated against COVID-19 while pregnant or breastfeeding: A cross-sectional study in Italy.

    The present study examined the role of the perception of risks and benefits for the mother and her babies in deciding about the COVID-19 vaccination. In this cross-sectional study, five hypotheses were tested using data from a convenience sample of Italian pregnant and/or breastfeeding women (N = 1104, July–September 2021). A logistic regression model estimated the influence of the predictors on the reported behavior, and a beta regression model was used to evaluate which factors influenced the willingness to become vaccinated among unvaccinated women. The COVID-19 vaccination overall risks/benefits tradeoff was highly predictive of both behavior and intention. Ceteris paribus, an increase in the perception of risks for the baby weighed more against vaccination than a similar increase in the perception of risks for the mother. Additionally, pregnant women resulted in being less likely (or willing) to be vaccinated in their status than breastfeeding women, but they were equally accepting of vaccination if they were not pregnant. COVID-19 risk perception predicted intention to become vaccinated, but not behavior. In conclusion, the overall risks/benefits tradeoff is key in predicting vaccination behavior and intention, but the concerns for the baby weigh more than those for the mother in the decision, shedding light on this previously neglected aspect

    Perturbative analysis of wave interactions in nonlinear systems

    This work proposes a new way for handling obstacles to asymptotic integrability in perturbed nonlinear PDEs within the method of Normal Forms - NF - for the case of multi-wave solutions. Instead of including the whole obstacle in the NF, only its resonant part is included, and the remainder is assigned to the homological equation. This leaves the NF intergable and its solutons retain the character of the solutions of the unperturbed equation. We exploit the freedom in the expansion to construct canonical obstacles which are confined to te interaction region of the waves. Fo soliton solutions, e.g., in the KdV equation, the interaction region is a finite domain around the origin; the canonical obstacles then do not generate secular terms in the homological equation. When the interaction region is infifnite, or semi-infinite, e.g., in wave-front solutions of the Burgers equation, the obstacles may contain resonant terms. The obstacles generate waves of a new type, which cannot be written as functionals of the solutions of the NF. When an obstacle contributes a resonant term to the NF, this leads to a non-standard update of th wave velocity.Comment: 13 pages, including 6 figure

    Multiple Interactions and the Structure of Beam Remnants

    Recent experimental data have established some of the basic features of multiple interactions in hadron-hadron collisions. The emphasis is therefore now shifting, to one of exploring more detailed aspects. Starting from a brief review of the current situation, a next-generation model is developed, wherein a detailed account is given of correlated flavour, colour, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions, encompassing both the partons initiating perturbative interactions and the partons left in the beam remnants.
