    Coherent States in Null-Plane Q.E.D

    Light front field theories are known to have the usual infra-red divergences of the equal time theories, as wellas new `spurious' infra-red divergences. The formar kind of IR divergences are usually treated by giving a small mass to the gauge particle. An alternative method to deal with these divergences is to calculate the transition matrix elements in a coherent state basis. In this paper we present, as a model calculation the lowest order correction to the three point vertex in QED using a coherent state basis in the light cone formalism. The relevant transition matrix element is shown to be free of the true IR divergences up to O(e2)O(e^2).Comment: 20 pages and two figures, REVTEX, ITP-SB-93-7

    Enzymatic hydrolysate from velvet antler suppresses adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells and attenuates obesity in high-fat diet-fed mice

    The purpose of the current study was to investigate the potential anti-obesity activity of an enzymatic hydrolysate of velvet antler in inhibiting adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells and in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed obese mice. The enzy- matic hydrolysate was prepared using the commercial food grade protease, Protamex. The velvet antler Protamex hydrolysate (VAPH) indicated profound inhibitory effects on adipogenesis dose-dependently by decreasing the accumulation of triglycerides and down-regulating expression levels of adipogenesis-related proteins C/EBPα, SREBP-1, and PPARγ. In a mouse model of HFD-induced obesity, oral administration of VAPH (100 and 300 mg/kg for 13 weeks) significantly reduced the body weight gain that had resulted from the HFD. VAPH treat- ment also lowered the serum glucose and triglyceride levels, while increasing the HDL-C level. Furthermore, the treatment greatly reduced hepatic lipid droplet accumulation as well as the size of adipocytes. Current findings H has profound anti-obesity effects and could be an effective candidate for preventing obesity and obesity-related chronic diseases

    H2 in the interstitial channels of nanotube bundles

    The equation of state of H2 adsorbed in the interstitial channels of a carbon nanotube bundle has been calculated using the diffusion Monte Carlo method. The possibility of a lattice dilation, induced by H2 adsorption, has been analyzed by modeling the cohesion energy of the bundle. The influence of factors like the interatomic potentials, the nanotube radius and the geometry of the channel on the bundle swelling is systematically analyzed. The most critical input is proved to be the C-H2 potential. Using the same model than in planar graphite, which is expected to be also accurate in nanotubes, the dilation is observed to be smaller than in previous estimations or even inexistent. H2 is highly unidimensional near the equilibrium density, the radial degree of freedom appearing progressively at higher densities.Comment: Accepted for publication in PR

    Antecedent use of fluoroquinolones is associated with resistance to moxifloxacin in Clostridium difficile

    ObjectiveMoxifloxacin is characterized by high activity against Gram-positive cocci and some Gram-positive and -negative anaerobes, including Clostridium difficile. This study investigates the role of prior quinolone use in relation to patterns of susceptibility of C. difficile to moxifloxacin.MethodsSixty-three clinical isolates of C. difficile were investigated for toxigenicity, susceptibility to moxifloxacin, and mutations in the DNA gyrase gene. The medical histories for 50 of these patients were available and used to identify previous fluoroquinolone use.ResultsThirty-three (52.4%) strains showed resistance to moxifloxacin (MICs ≥ 16 mg/L). All moxifloxacin-resistant strains harbored a mutation at amino acid codon Ser-83 of gyrA. Forty-five isolates (71.4%) were toxigenic; all moxifloxacin-resistant strains were in this group. Resistance to moxifloxacin was associated with prior use of fluoroquinolones (P-value 0.009, chi-square).ConclusionsAlthough the use of moxifloxacin to treat C. difficile-associated diarrhea is not likely to be common, these data show a relationship between antecedent fluoroquinolone use and resistance to moxifloxacin in C. difficile isolates, and raise questions regarding selection pressure for resistance placed on colonizing bacteria exposed to fluoroquinolones.     Domain Wall Resistance in Perpendicular (Ga,Mn)As: dependence on pinning

    We have investigated the domain wall resistance for two types of domain walls in a (Ga,Mn)As Hall bar with perpendicular magnetization. A sizeable positive intrinsic DWR is inferred for domain walls that are pinned at an etching step, which is quite consistent with earlier observations. However, much lower intrinsic domain wall resistance is obtained when domain walls are formed by pinning lines in unetched material. This indicates that the spin transport across a domain wall is strongly influenced by the nature of the pinning.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    Theory of Transition Temperature of Magnetic Double Perovskites

    We formulate a theory of double perovskite coumpounds such as Sr2_2FeReO6_6 and Sr2_2FeMoO6_6 which have attracted recent attention for their possible uses as spin valves and sources of spin polarized electrons. We solve the theory in the dynamical mean field approximation to find the magnetic transition temperature TcT_c. We find that TcT_c is determined by a subtle interplay between carrier density and the Fe-Mo/Re site energy difference, and that the non-Fe same-sublattice hopping acts to reduce TcT_c. Our results suggest that presently existing materials do not optimize TcT_c

    The Cytomegalovirus gB/MF59 vaccine candidate induces antibodies against an antigenic domain controlling cell-to-cell spread

    Vaccination against human cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection remains high priority. A recombinant form of a protein essential for CMV entry, glycoprotein B (gB), demonstrated partial protection in a clinical trial (NCT00299260) when delivered with the MF59 adjuvant. Although the antibody titre against gB correlated with protection poor neutralising responses against the 5 known antigenic domains (AD) of gB were evident. Here, we show that vaccination of CMV seronegative patients induces an antibody response against a region of gB we term AD-6. Responses to the polypeptide AD-6 are detected in >70% of vaccine recipients yet in <5% of naturally infected people. An AD-6 antibody binds to gB and to infected cells but not the virion directly. Consistent with this, the AD-6 antibody is non-neutralising but, instead, prevents cell-cell spread of CMV in vitro. The discovery of AD-6 responses has the potential to explain part of the protection mediated by gB vaccines against CMV following transplantation

Intensive shearing gives a significant refinement in grain size and intermetallic particle size. It also is observed that the morphology of intermetallics, defect bands, and microscopic defects in high-pressure die cast components are affected by intensive shearing the liquid metal. We attempt to discuss the possible mechanism for these effects.Funded by the EPSRC

    The response of parameterized orographic gravity waves to rapid warming over the Tibetan Plateau

    Using the ERA-Interim reanalysis during 1979–2017, this work for the first time investigates the climatology and long-term trend of orographic gravity waves (OGWs) in the Tibetan Plateau (TP). The linkage between the trends of OGWs and the rapid warming over the TP is also studied. Climatologically, the most prominent surface wave momentum flux (SWMF) of OGWs occurs in the western and southeastern TP, while it is weak in the central TP. The SWMF is stronger in winter and spring than in autumn and summer. Overall, the mean SWMF over the TP experienced a weak decreasing trend. The decrease of SWMF mainly took place in the western and southeastern TP in spring. However, increasing trends were found in the central TP in winter. Changes of SWMF are mainly caused by the changes of horizontal wind near the surface, while buoyancy frequency and air density play a minor role. In response to the inhomogeneous warming over the TP, the surface winds were adjusted through thermal wind balance. In spring (winter), the most remarkable warming occurred in the northern (southern) TP, which reduced (enhanced) the meridional temperature gradient across the plateau, and thus led to a deceleration (acceleration) of the horizontal wind
