    Effect of the combination of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and pharmacological thrombolysis on hemodialysis patients

    Purpose: To examine the efficacy of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), combined withpharmacologic thrombolysis (PT) on thrombosis of autologous arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs),inflammatory factors, and β2 microglobulin (β2-MG) levels in hemodialysis patients.Methods: Seventy-eight patients with AVF thrombosis allocated randomly into a control group (CG) received PTA, and a study group (SG) received PTA combined with PT (n = 39 in each). The patency, vascular condition, inflammatory factors, viz, interleukin-6 (IL-6), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)), β2-MG levels, vascular-related factors (VEGF-A and MCP-1), complications, and quality of life were determined.Results: At three and six months after surgery, t SG exhibited a higher vascular patency than CG (p <0.05). Serum levels of IL-6, hs-CRP, β2-MG, VEGF-A, and MCP-1 of t SG were lower than those of CG(p < 0.05). The SG showed higher cross-sectional area, inner diameter at the site of fistula, and better quality of life scores than CG (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The combination of PTA and PT enhances efficacy, increases vascular patency, reduces inflammatory response, lowers the level of β2-MG, and improves quality of life in patients with AVFs without increasing complications. Thus, the combination treatment has potentials for the management of hemodialysis patients

    Spatial distribution of soil organic carbon stock in Moso bamboo forests in subtropical China

    Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys heterocycla (Carr.) Mitford cv. Pubescens) is an important timber substitute in China. Site specific stand management requires an accurate estimate of soil organic carbon (SOC) stock for maintaining stand productivity and understanding global carbon cycling. This study compared ordinary kriging (OK) and inverse distance weighting (IDW) approaches to study the spatial distribution of SOC stock within 0–60cm using 111 soil samples in Moso bamboo forests in subtropical China. Similar spatial patterns but different spatial distribution ranges of SOC stock from OK and IDW highlighted the necessity to apply different approaches to obtain accurate and consistent results of SOC stock distribution. Different spatial patterns of SOC stock suggested the use of different fertilization treatments in Moso bamboo forests across the study area. SOC pool within 0–60cm was 6.46 and 6.22 Tg for OK and IDW; results which were lower than that of conventional approach (CA, 7.41 Tg). CA is not recommended unless coordinates of the sampling locations are missing and the spatial patterns of SOC stock are not required. OK is recommended for the uneven distribution of sampling locations.     Ecosystem Carbon Stock Loss after Land Use Change in Subtropical Forests in China

    Converting secondary natural forests (SFs) to Chinese fir plantations (CFPs) represents one of the most important (8.9 million ha) land use changes in subtropical China. This study estimated both biomass and soil C stocks in a SF and a CFP that was converted from a SF, to quantify the effects of land use change on ecosystem C stock. After the forest conversion, biomass C in the CFP (73 Mg¨ ha´1 ) was significantly lower than that of the SF (114 Mg¨ ha´1 ). Soil organic C content and stock decreased with increasing soil depth, and the soil C stock in the 0–10 cm layer accounted for more than one third of the total soil C stock over 0–50 cm, emphasizing the importance of management of the top soil to reduce the soil C loss. Total ecosystem C stock of the SF and the CFP was 318 and 200 Mg¨ ha´1 , respectively, 64% of which was soil C for both stands (205 Mg¨ ha´1 for the SF and 127 Mg¨ ha´1 for the CFP). This indicates that land use change from the SF to the CFP significantly decreased ecosystem C stock and highlights the importance of managing soil C

    HIV self-testing among men who have sex with men in China: a qualitative implementation research study.

    BACKGROUND: HIV self-testing (HIVST) may expand HIV testing, but there have been few pilot programmes among men who have sex with men (MSM). This purpose of this study was to evaluate HIVST implementation among MSM in China using qualitative methods. METHODS: We undertook semistructured interviews among MSM and those organising HIVST programmes for MSM. Purposive sampling method was used to ensure men with different HIV serostatuses, ages and HIVST frequencies were included. Men were recruited from MSM community-based organisations and a local HIV clinic. An implementation science framework was used to interpret the findings. Two individuals used a standard code-based methodology to identify themes. RESULTS: Forty-two MSM and six stakeholders were interviewed. Our data showed many MSM and stakeholders preferred HIVST to facility-based testing. Most men reported that HIVST empowered MSM and informed sexual decision making. Many men noted that decreasing the HIVST price may increase demand. Some men noted that HIVST could be scaled up through social media and by modifying bulky packaging. Minimal adverse events were reported. CONCLUSIONS: HIVST may expand HIV testing and promote empowerment of MSM. Minimal adverse outcomes were noted, but further implementation research is needed

    Crowdsourcing HIV Test Promotion Videos: A Noninferiority Randomized Controlled Trial in China.

    BACKGROUND: Crowdsourcing, the process of shifting individual tasks to a large group, may enhance human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing interventions. We conducted a noninferiority, randomized controlled trial to compare first-time HIV testing rates among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender individuals who received a crowdsourced or a health marketing HIV test promotion video. METHODS: Seven hundred twenty-one MSM and transgender participants (≥16 years old, never before tested for HIV) were recruited through 3 Chinese MSM Web portals and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 videos. The crowdsourced video was developed using an open contest and formal transparent judging while the evidence-based health marketing video was designed by experts. Study objectives were to measure HIV test uptake within 3 weeks of watching either HIV test promotion video and cost per new HIV test and diagnosis. RESULTS: Overall, 624 of 721 (87%) participants from 31 provinces in 217 Chinese cities completed the study. HIV test uptake was similar between the crowdsourced arm (37% [114/307]) and the health marketing arm (35% [111/317]). The estimated difference between the interventions was 2.1% (95% confidence interval, -5.4% to 9.7%). Among those tested, 31% (69/225) reported a new HIV diagnosis. The crowdsourced intervention cost substantially less than the health marketing intervention per first-time HIV test (US131vsUS131 vs US238 per person) and per new HIV diagnosis (US415vsUS415 vs US799 per person). CONCLUSIONS: Our nationwide study demonstrates that crowdsourcing may be an effective tool for improving HIV testing messaging campaigns and could increase community engagement in health campaigns.
