    Get PDF

Unlocking innovation in the sport industry through additive manufacturing

    Get PDF
Fast changing customer demands and rising requirements in product performance constantly challenge sports equipment manufacturers to come up with new and improved products to stay competitive. Additive Manufacturing (AM), also referred to as 3D Printing, can enhance the development of new products by providing an efficient approach of rapid prototyping. This research aims to analyse the current adoption of AM technologies in the innovation process of the sports industry i.e. level of awareness; how it is implemented; and it impact on the innovation process. Literature research shows that AM brings many possibilities to enhance the innovation process, and case studies indicated several obstacles that hinder the technology from fully unfolding. AM is still at the early stage of entering the sports equipment industry and its potential benefits have not been fully exploited yet. The findings generated from the research of real life practices show that AM provides several benefits when it comes to the innovation process, such as a faster development process, an optimised output, as well as the possibility to create new designs. However, companies are not yet able to enhance the innovation process in a way that leads to new products and new markets with AM. Limitations, including a small range of process able material and an inefficient mass production, still restrain the technology and lead to unused capability. Nevertheless, future prospects indicate the growing importance of AM in the innovation process and show that its advancement paves the way to new and innovative products

Comparison of screening for pre-eclampsia at 31-34 weeks' gestation by sFlt-1/PlGF ratio and a method combining maternal factors with sFlt-1 and PlGF

Objective: To estimate the patient-specific risk of preeclampsia (PE) at 31-34 weeks’ gestation by a combination of maternal characteristics and medical history with multiple of the median (MoM) values of serum placental growth factor (PLGF) and serum soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFLT-1) and compare the performance of screening to that achieved by the sFLT-1 to PLGF ratio. Methods: This was a prospective observational study in women attending for a third-trimester ultrasound scan at 31-34 weeks as part of routine pregnancy care. We estimated the performance of screening of PE with delivery within four weeks of assessment (PE at <4 weeks) and PE from four weeks after assessment and up to 40 weeks’ gestation (PE at 4w-40GW) in screening by the sFLT-1 to PLGF ratio and by a to PLGF ratio and by a method utilizing Bayes theorem to combine maternal factors and MoM values of sFLT-1 and PLGF. The significance of difference in performance of screening between the method utilising Bayes theorem and that of the sFLT-1 to PLGF ratio was assessed by comparison of the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROC). Results: The study population of 8,063 singleton pregnancies included 231 (2.9%) that subsequently developed PE. In the prediction of delivery with PE at <4 weeks the performance of the method utilising Bayes theorem was similar to that of the sFLT-1 to PLGF (AUROC: 0.987, 95%CI 0.979-0.995 vs. 0.988, 95%CI: 0.981-0.994; p=0.961). and at fixed fixed screen positive rate (SPR) of 3.9% the detection rate (DR) was 87.1% for both methods. In contrast, the performance of screening for delivery with PE at 4w-40GW was better with the method utilising Bayes theorem than with the sFLT-1 to PLGF ratio (AUROC: 0.884, 95%CI 0.854-0.914 vs. 0.818, 95%CI: 0.775--0.860 ; p<0.0001) and at total fixed SPR of 25.7% the DRs were 84.4% vs. 73.0%. Conclusion: At 31-34 weeks’ gestation the performance of screening for PE at <4 weeks from assessment by the method utilising Bayes theorem is similar to that of the sFLT-1 to PLGF ratio, but the former is superior to the latter in prediction of PE >>4 weeks

It’s time to consider LGBTQ-affirmative psychology in Malaysia

    Get PDF
International studies have revealed stark mental health inequities affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people. While there is increasing awareness of higher prevalence of mental health difficulties among LGBTQ people in Malaysia, this issue has often been viewed through a cisheterosexist (cisgenderism and heterosexism) lens that criminalizes, pathologizes, marginalizes, and/or delegitimizes noncisgender and nonheterosexual forms of identities. Informed by LGBTQ-affirmative psychology, this viewpoint aims to scrutinize the common misconceptions surrounding the living experiences of Malaysian LGBTQ people; these include poor mental health among LGBTQ people, victim-blaming narrative of sexual violence, LGBTQ is a mental illness, and LGBTQ is a Western influence. This viewpoint draws on empirical and theoretical research, as well as international guidelines, to debunk these misconceptions. Recommendations are also provided for psychology practitioners and researchers to embark on the journey to supporting Malaysian LGBTQ people in a culturally safe manner

Plastic surgery in the European Union: A study of development, training, manpowerplanning and migration

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to clarify the role of plastic surgery in the European Union (the former European Connnnnity). The idea is that this will lead to a better understanding of the specialty among laymen., colleagnes and healthcare officials. To this end, the historical development of the specialty and its present day problems, including the European Unification and border zone activities by other specialties, will be discussed. Whenever possible, links and counections with the historical development and the boundary problems will be sought in the discussion of the subject under review, which subjects will be categorized under severa! headings. Also, the training in plastic surgery will be analysed and a comparison will be made concerning the various EU countries (the fonner EC countries). Furthermore, the effects of European Unification including the possible need for European standardization of contents and training of the specialty and manpower planning and migration within Europe will be discussed. Finally, reconnnendations will be made for the future development of the specialty. Plastic surgery is an intrigning specialty. On the one hand it has experienced a tremendous development, on the other hand there are problems, due to its complexity (Luce, 1993), which require clarification. The need to discuss these problems is partly caused by the increasing media coverage of the aesthetic side of the specialty of plastic surgery and by the boundary problems with other specialties

Homicide-suicide incidents involving child victims can have a detrimental impact on survivors of the violence, family members and friends of the decedents, and other community members, but the rare occurrence of these acts makes using quantitative data to examine their associated antecedents challenging. Therefore, using qualitative data from the 2003-2011 National Violent Death Reporting System, we examined 175 cases of homicide-suicide involving child victims in an effort to better understand the complex situational factors of these events. Our findings indicate that 98% of homicide-suicides with child victims are perpetrated by adults (mostly parents) and propelled by the perpetrators' intimate partner problems, mental health problems, and criminal/legal problems. These events are often premeditated, and plans for the violence are sometimes disclosed prior to its occurrence. Findings provide support for several theoretical perspectives, and implications for prevention are discussed.CC999999/Intramural CDC HHS/United States2019-02-01T00:00:00Z26385898PMC4795978vault:1634

Health beliefs in oral cancer: Malaysian estate Indian scenario

    Get PDF
This is a study to describe the health beliefs related to oral cancer (OC) in a high-risk group in Malaysia, a predominantly Indian community living in an agricultural setting called an estate. The study population was a convenient sample of 112 adults, above 20 years of age, attending oral cancer screening in two estates. The subjects consisted of 106 (94.6) Indians and six (5.4) Malays. Using the Health Belief Model, the perceptions of susceptibility to OC, its severity, and the benefits of and barriers to preventive actions, as well as beliefs underlying OC aetiology were investigated. About half of the subjects (n = 57, 50.9) felt susceptible to oral cancer. A majority of subjects (n = 93, 83.0) felt that oral cancer is a severe disease. Thirty four people (30.4) perceived OC as a preventable disease, while 56 (50) did not, and the remaining 22 (19.6) did not know if OC was preventable or not. The majority of subjects (84.8) believed that modifications to the betel quid habit could be beneficial. The information solicited can be used as a starting point to design health-education activities aimed at this group in particular and the population in general. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd.
