    Origin of the Tc_c enhancement in heterostructure cuprate superconductors

    Recent experiments on heterostructures composed of two or more films of cuprate superconductors of different oxygen doping levels\cite{Yuli,Gozar} have shown a remarkable Tc_c enhancement (up to 50%) relative to single compound films. We provide here a simple explanation of the enhancement which arises naturally from a collection of experimental works. We show that the enhancement could be caused by a structural change in the lattice, namely an increase in the distance of the apical oxygen from the copper-oxygen plane. This increase modifies the effective off-site interaction in the plane which in turn enhances the d-wave superconductivity order parameter. To illustrate this point we study the extended Hubbard model using the fluctuation exchange approximation

    Catalyst for Democracy? Outcomes and Processes in Community-University Interaction

    Regional colleges and universities are unique in their historic commitment to serve the economic, social, and cultural interests of particular communities. Drawing on the findings of a multi-site case study of two regional institutions, this paper outlines the goals of community-university interaction, then focuses more specifically on the processes of collaboration as distinct from the participants’ desired outcomes. Separating goals from process in this way allows us to explore the civic/democratic impact of these initiatives beyond their economic impact. Findings suggest that when community-university engagement initiatives focus too narrowly on economic development goals, project leaders sometimes neglect the potential of engagement initiatives as catalysts for participatory democracy, thereby limiting input from traditionally under-represented groups. Scholars and practitioners can draw from community development literature, as well as the scholarship related to community-university engagement, allowing simultaneous attention to the nature of relationships between universities and the communities they serve and the process of building inclusive relationships

    A STUDY OF PERCEPTIONS OF MATH MINDSET, MATH ANXIETY, AND VIEW OF MATH BY YOUNG ADULTS

    This study’s purpose was to determine whether instruction in growth math mindset led to change in perceptions of 18-22-year-old at-risk students in math mindset, math anxiety, and view of math. The experimental curriculum was created by the researcher with the guidance of experts in mathematics and education and focused on the impact of brain growth and learning supported by positive math mindset. Young adult public charter high school at-risk students were surveyed before and after completion of the experimental intervention to measure their perceptions in the domains of Math Mindset, Math Anxiety, and View of Math. The results revealed significant differences in the treatment group’s pre-to post-test perceptions in all three math domains (p \u3c .001) Comparison between the experimental and control groups were conducted, revealing significant differences between the two group in all three domains of math. These results point to the effectiveness of the experimental curriculum and instructional techniques to positively impact students’ perceptions of Math Mindset, reduction of Math Anxiety, and improvement in View of Math
