    Participatory Ranking of Fodders in the Western Hills of Nepal

    Fodder is an important source of feed of the ruminants in Nepal. In the mid hills of Nepal, farmers generally practice integrated farming system that combines crop cultivation with livestock husbandry and agroforestry. Tree fodders are good sources of protein during the forage and green grass scarcity periods especially in dry season. Local communities possess indigenous knowledge for the selection of grasses and tree fodders at different seasons in mid hills of western Nepal. A study was conducted on the perception of farmers with respect to selection of fodder species in eight clusters in Kaski and Lumjung districts that range 900-2000 meter above sea level and receive average precipitation of 2000- 4500mm per annum. During the fodder preference ranking, farmers prepared the inventory of fodders found around the villages and nearby forests and selected top ten most important fodders in terms of their availability, palatability, fodder yield, milk yield and milk fat yield. In total, 23 top ranking fodders species were selected from the eight clusters. These fodder species were also ranked using pairwise ranking and weighted scoring methods and ranking was done on the basis of merit numbers obtained from weighted scores. The analysis revealed Artocarpus lakoocha as best tree fodder followed by Ficus semicordata, Thysanolena maxima and Ficus calvata. Similarly, the calendar of fodders trees for lopping season and the best feeding time was prepared on the basis of farmers\u27 local knowledge. This study suggests strategies for promotion of locally preferred tree fodder species and supplementing tree fodder with feed in different seasons depending on their availability and local preferences

    Health care providers’ perspectives on the content and structure of a culturally tailored antenatal care programme to expectant parents and family members in Nepal.

    Background: In Nepal childbirth is one of the most vulnerable periods of a woman's life and knowledge about the normal birth process, as well as danger signs, could be a life-saving intervention. Antenatal care programmes are therefore particularly relevant in Nepal where women deliver on their own in rural areas as well as in facility and hospital settings. Aim: This study aimed to describe the relevant content and structure of a culturally tailored antenatal care programme in Nepal to be developed from the input of healthcare providers. Methods: Qualitative semi-structured interviews with 26 health care providers were analyzed using Elo and Kyngäs’ content analysis. This study received ethical approval from the research ethics committee at Dalarna University, Sweden, and the Nepal Health Research Council. Findings: The results present possible (1) content and (2) structure of a culturally tailored antenatal care programme. Content is comprised of (a) how pregnancy affects the mother and how her lifestyle affects the unborn child; (b) normal childbirth, complications, and preparations; and (c) postpartum period – parenthood, childcare, and breastfeeding. Structure is related to (a) programme leader and location; (b) participants; and (c) pedagogy. Conclusion: This antenatal care programme will be culturally tailored to empower women with self-confidence and their decision-making power may increase in the family system regarding their own and their children’s health and wellbeing. Clinical Application: This study can help those designing culturally sensitive antenatal care programs in Nepal

    Ensemble Riemannian data assimilation over the Wasserstein space

    In this paper, we present an ensemble data assimilation paradigm over a Riemannian manifold equipped with the Wasserstein metric. Unlike the Euclidean distance used in classic data assimilation methodologies, the Wasserstein metric can capture the translation and difference between the shapes of square-integrable probability distributions of the background state and observations. This enables us to formally penalize geophysical biases in state space with nonGaussian distributions. The new approach is applied to dissipative and chaotic evolutionary dynamics, and its potential advantages and limitations are highlighted compared to the classic ensemble data assimilation approaches under systematic errors

    Changes in the maternal hemodynamics often lead to conditions of fetal hypoxia, fetal hypertension and irregularity in the flow of blood in the umbilical arteries. Any differences in the blood flow is said to be equalized by Hyrtl's anastomosis, a common connection between the umbilical arteries near the cord insertion.Transverse histological sections followed by routine H&E stain and using Image J software, for the measurement of the muscle thickness and luminal diameter. For continuous variables mean values ±SD was considered and for non continuous variables was expressed as percentages.On statistical analysis, P values were significant for the muscle thickness between the different groups (P≤0.001).There was a significant difference in the tunica media of the umbilical arteries and the Hyrtl’s anastomosis in both normotensive groups and pregnancy induced hypertension. In conclusion, the Hyrtl's anastomosis showed a considerable difference in the muscular layers as compared to the umbilical arteries

    Effects of COVID-19 during lockdown in Nepal.

    Nepal started its full lockdown on March 24, 2020 and has been extended until 14 June 2020 as a precaution for prevention of COVID-19 infection. However, the strict lockdown has been criticised by many as not all the deaths are caused by COVID-19. The long and strict lockdown have had some negative effects in many aspects of health of an individual in the community. Many women are facing barriers to access maternity health care during the lockdown period and there has been rise in the suicidal behaviour such as sucidal attempt and actual suicide itself among the general population. As the lockdown began in Nepal, all the school and colleges were suspended, and children were forced to spend their time indoors and exams has been postponed leaving the students stressed about the uncertainty of their future. Social distancing, isolation and quarantine at home can result in isolated in an abusive home where there could be even more increase in abuse during such crisis. Millions of babies are missing the routine vaccinations which is a threat to global achievement in immunization. Apart from the rise in negative impact on health of Nepali people, there are other impacts related to health such as serious impacts on logistics and supply management including shortage of medicine and food supply; and impacts on farming including both production and sale. Nepal took several precautionary measures as a response towards COVID-19 such as First, limiting international air travel, sealing the land border-crossings with India and introduction of social distancing measures. However, with rise in deaths due to non COVID related causes and negative impacts on economic and financial condition of the country, there is a need for the country to ease its lockdown. Contact tracing, making face mask mandatory along with social distancing measure can be an alternative to lockdown for Nepal while the country is preparing to ease its lockdown. Social distancing, hygiene, lifestyle factors and PPE measures need to continue for long term, whilst we need to keep working on the big public health issues such as poverty reduction, improving access to health service to achieve universal health coverage

    Energy Gardens for Small-Scale Farmers in Nepal Institutions, Species and Technology. Field Work Report

    The Nepal Energy Garden forges new links across disciplines by integrating research on the institutional economics of energy and technology transfer with the knowledge of botanists and engineers. The objectives are fourfold: to investigate the institutional economics of energy biomass and biofuel production from local to national and global scales to undertake a technical assessment of resources and conversion routes to combine the institutional and technical analyses to devise ways for community cooperation on sustainable energy production to transfer the knowledge gained to a wide international audience. The energy garden concept originates from an idea developed by the Hassan Biofuels Park in India and will follow their approach for using local plant species as the source of biofuels, thereby avoiding loss of biodiversity as much as possible, and using marginal land to avoid competition with food crops. The project is a partnership of four organisations in Nepal and the Hassan Biofuels Park. The objectives will be achieved through a combination of policy analysis, reviews of plant species, analysis of technical options and field work in the villages. The aim is to test the feasibility of expanding the successful Energy Garden approach to Nepal and worldwide

    Screening and characterisation of CdTe/CdS quantum dot-binding peptides for material surface functionalisation

    Quantum dots (QDs) are promising nanomaterials due to their unique photophysical properties. For them to be useful in biological applications, the particle surface generally needs to be conjugated to biological molecules, such as antibodies. In this study, we screened CdTe/CdS QD-binding peptides from a phage display library as linkers for simple and bio-friendly QD modification. Among five QD-binding peptide candidates, a series of truncated peptides designed from two high-affinity peptides were subjected to an array-based binding assay with QDs to assess their functional core sequences and characteristics. Linking these isolated, shortened peptides (PWSLNR and SGVYK) with an antibody-binding peptide (NKFRGKYK) created dual-functional peptides that are capable of QD surface functionalisation by antibodies. Consequently, the dual-functional peptides could mediate anti-CD9 antibody functionalisation onto CdTe/CdS QD surface; CD9 protein imaging of cancer cells was also demonstrated. Our proposed peptides offer an effective vehicle for QD surface functionalisation in biological applications
