OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES TO BODY FLUIDS AND BEHAVIORS REGARDING THEIR PREVENTION AND POST-EXPOSURE AMONG MEDICAL AND NURSING STUDENTS AT A BRAZILIAN PUBLIC UNIVERSITY
A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the frequencies and characteristics of occupational exposures among medical and nursing students at a Brazilian public university, in addition to their prevention and post-exposure behavior. During the second semester of 2010, a self-administered semi-structured questionnaire was completed by 253/320 (79.1%) medical students of the clinical course and 149/200 (74.5%) nursing students who were already performing practical activities. Among medical students, 53 (20.9%) suffered 73 injuries, which mainly occurred while performing extra-curricular activities (32.9%), with cutting and piercing objects (56.2%), in the emergency room (39.7%), and as a result of lack of technical preparation or distraction (54.8%). Among nursing students, 27 (18.1%) suffered 37 injuries, which mainly occurred with hollow needles (67.6%) in the operating room or wards (72.2%), and as a result of lack of technical preparation or distraction (62.1%). Among medical and nursing students, respectively, 96.4% and 48% were dissatisfied with the instructions on previously received exposure prevention; 48% and 18% did not always use personal protective equipment; 67.6% and 16.8% recapped used needles; 49.3% and 35.1% did not bother to find out the source patient's serological results post-exposure; and 1.4% and 18.9% officially reported injuries. In conclusion, this study found high frequencies of exposures among the assessed students, inadequate practices in prevention and post-exposure, and, consequently, the need for training in “standard precautions” to prevent such exposures
Chronic kidney inadequacy is a disease with serious physical, psychological and socioeconomic implications for the patient. The renal transplant provides life quality to chronic renal patients. The purpose of this study is to analyze associations among nursing diagnoses, related factors and defining characteristics present in renal transplanted patients of a university hospital. A descriptive, exploratory, cross sectional study was performed with 58 patients from December, 2004 to April, 2005. Data collection instruments were: interview scripts and physical exams. Results showed associations between Sleep pattern disturbance and Sexual dysfunction, Sleep pattern disturbance and Altered sexuality pattern, Sexual dysfunction and Altered sexuality pattern. The study contributes for the identification of nursing diagnoses related to specific characteristics of these patients

Activity of Brazilian propolis against Aeromonas hydrophila and its effect on Nile tilapia growth, hematological and non-specific immune response under bacterial infection
The effect of the ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) on Aeromonas hydrophila was analyzed by determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Then, the effects of crude propolis powder (CPP) on growth, hemato-immune parameters of the Nile tilapia, as well as its effects on resistance to A. hydrophila challenge were investigated. The CPP (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0%) was added to the diet of 280 Nile tilapia (50.0 ± 5.7 g fish-1). Hemato-immune parameters were analyzed before and after the bacterial challenge. Red blood cell, hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitric oxide (NO) were evaluated. The MIC of the EEP was 13% (v/v) with a bactericidal effect after 24 hours. Growth performance was significantly lower for those fish fed diets containing 2.5 and 3% of CPP compared to the control diet. Differences in CPP levels affected fish hemoglobin, neutrophils number and NO following the bacterial challenge. For others parameters no significant differences were observed. Our results show that although propolis has bactericidal properties in vitro, the addition of crude propolis powder to Nile tilapia extruded diets does not necessarily lead to an improvement of fish health.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Departamento de Produção Animal Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia/FMVZ Grupo NECTAR Universidade Estadual Paulista/UNESP, Rua Prof. Doutor Walter Mauricio Correa, s/n, Caixa Postal 560, Campus de BotucatuDepartamento de Melhoramento e Nutrição Animal Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia/FMVZ Grupo AQUANUTRI Universidade Estadual Paulista/UNESP, Rua Prof. Doutor Walter Mauricio Correa, s/n, Caixa Postal 560, Campus de BotucatuDepartamento de Bioestatística Instituto de Biociências de Botucatu Universidade Estadual Paulista/UNESP, R.
