A New Constraint on the Ly Fraction of UV Very Bright Galaxies at Redshift 7
We study the extent to which very bright (-23.0 < MUV < -21.75) Lyman-break
selected galaxies at redshifts z~7 display detectable Lya emission. To explore
this issue, we have obtained follow-up optical spectroscopy of 9 z~7 galaxies
from a parent sample of 24 z~7 galaxy candidates selected from the 1.65 sq.deg
COSMOS-UltraVISTA and SXDS-UDS survey fields using the latest near-infrared
public survey data, and new ultra-deep Subaru z'-band imaging (which we also
present and describe in this paper). Our spectroscopy has yielded only one
possible detection of Lya at z=7.168 with a rest-frame equivalent width EW_0 =
3.7 (+1.7/-1.1) Angstrom. The relative weakness of this line, combined with our
failure to detect Lya emission from the other spectroscopic targets allows us
to place a new upper limit on the prevalence of strong Lya emission at these
redshifts. For conservative calculation and to facilitate comparison with
previous studies at lower redshifts, we derive a 1-sigma upper limit on the
fraction of UV bright galaxies at z~7 that display EW_0 > 50 Angstrom, which we
estimate to be < 0.23. This result may indicate a weak trend where the fraction
of strong Lya emitters ceases to rise, and possibly falls between z~6 and z~7.
Our results also leave open the possibility that strong Lya may still be more
prevalent in the brightest galaxies in the reionization era than their fainter
counterparts. A larger spectroscopic sample of galaxies is required to derive a
more reliable constraint on the neutral hydrogen fraction at z~7 based on the
Lya fraction in the bright galaxies.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
An Experiment of the discovery study system in basic nursing technique in intramural practice -Help of eating and excreting-
The content of nursing education and the effective ways of studying nursing have been investigated by teachers of nursing. Therefore, in the lesson of "Basic Nursing Technique" did we examine the educational way in which the students' will to study nursing can be heightened and the students are able to work independently and creatively. we focused on the educational way which adopted the discovery study system in the lessons of "Help of Eating" and "Help of Excreting". From the viewpoint of the students' intention to study and their work, the effect of this educational way was researched according to their self-appreciation. As a result, the following four points were made clear by the introduction of the discovery study system. (1) The students could cooperate more easily in studying nursing. (2) The students' interest in nursing was heightened more than before. (3) The students could enhance their will to study nursing and work independently. (4) The items of "Sense of Purpose" and "Ingenuity" were less evaluaoed than the other items
The Effects of the Introduction of the Video-tape Recorder to Basic Nursing Care Education - The Use of Video-tapes taken at the Practice of Aseptic Handling Technique by Students -
The Video-tape recorder was introduced to tape the scene of a preliminary test of students' practice to aseptically handle syringes. These video-tapes taken were released to students to watch and to refer back to for their self-study. Students were consequently divided into four groups on how to utilize the video-tapes. The scores of the preliminary and final test and their differences were statistically compared by the groups. The results suggested that the use of video-tapes is effective for the achievement of skills in delicate techniques of nursing care and especially the utilization upon their own initiative leads to a more successful result
Efficacy of a check list and a video tape in learning the aseptic method
Basic nursing care includes many kinds of techniques. The aseptic method is especially very important technique among them. We gave students check lists and video tapes in order to master the method by themselves and obtained following results. 1) Students can properly assess their techniques of nursing care by using a check list and watching a video. 2) Students can assess by themselves more effectively in a simple and easy action. 3) Even for a complicated action, students can make better their self-assessments by watching a video
Self-evaluation ability of nursing college students on basic nursing care technics
We studied about self-evaluation ability of the nursing collge students based on two times test on basic nursing care technics. The self-evalution of the students was approximately one point higher than the evaluation of their instractors in the both tests. In the second test, the seif-evaluation of the students coincided in the higher rate with the evaluation of their instructors than in the first test. One-third of the students over-estimated their own basic nursing skills. The item of the evaluation in the high coincidente rate suggests that the evaluation was clear. On the other hand, most of the item of the evaluation in the low rate of coincidence rate sugests that the view point of the evaluation was needed more considerration
Comparison of the Cutaneous Wound Healing of Ovariectomized Mouse at 12 Weeks with That of SHAM and Estrogen-Administered Mice
The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effect of 17-estradiol on cutaneous wound healing in 12-week ovariectomized (OVX) female mice. Eight-week-old female mice were divided into three groups: administration of 17-estradiol after OVX (OVX + 17-estradiol), OVX, and sham (SHAM). Four weeks after surgery, the mice received two full-thickness cutaneous wounds. 17-Estradiol at 0.01 g/day was administered on the backs of mice in the OVX + 17-estradiol group every day. Plasma 17-estradiol level in the OVX + 17-estradiol group was thus significantly higher than in the SHAM and OVX groups, but there was no significant difference between SHAM and OVX groups. The ratio of wound area was not significantly different among the three groups. However, the period required to reach a ratio of wound area of 0.15 in the OVX + 17-estradiol group was significantly shorter than in the SHAM and OVX groups. These results indicate that cutaneous wound healing in young OVX mice was promoted by the administration of 17-estradiol compared with that in SHAM and OVX mice without such administration, but there was no difference between the latter two groups that did not differ in 17-estradiol level
Comparison of energy metabolism in Insulin-Dependent and Non-Insulin-Dependent diabetes mellitus
To compare the metabolic consequences of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), glycemic control and energy metabolism were evaluated in 18 children displaying IDDM and 19 NIDDM adult patients. With rising concentrations of fasting blood glucose (FBG), hemoglobin A1C and free fatty acid, the percentage of the ratio of resting energy expenditure (REE) to predicted REE expressed as %REE increased and the respiratory quotient (RQ) decreased. The linear regression between RQ and FBG showed the same gradient in IDDM and NIDDM although the RQ in IDDM was always 0.07 lower than that in NIDDM given various FBG concentrations. Those patients whose RQ values were less than 0.7, indicating ketone body production, included 8 (44%) IDDM and 2 (11%) NIDDM patients. These results may explain the relatively greater manifestation of ketoacidosis in IDDM
The effects of perilla seed oil ointment for atopic dermatitis
The perilla seed oil contains rich α-linolenic acid (α-LNA), parent n-3 fatty acid. The dietary intake of n-3 fatty acid, such as perilla seed oil, has been reported to have some clinical effects in patients with allergic disease. In this report, we prepared the perilla seed oil ointment for atopic dermatitis and the effects of the ointment was evaluated in three patients with atopic dermatitis. This ointment suppressed skin itch, and improved papules, excoriation, lichenification and desquamation of the skin. These results suggest that the perilla seed oil ointment has some effectiveness including suppression of inflammatory changes of the skin in patients with atopic dermatitis
The Mass-Dependent Clustering History of K-selected Galaxies at z < 4 in the SXDS/UDS Field
We investigate mass-dependent galaxy evolution based on a large sample of
(more than 50,000) K-band selected galaxies in a multi-wavelength catalog of
the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) and the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey
(UKIDSS)/Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). We employ the optical to near-infrared
photometry to determine photometric redshifts of these galaxies. Then, we
estimate the stellar mass of our sample galaxies using a standard fitting
procedure. From the sample galaxies, we obtain the stellar mass function of
galaxies and the cosmic stellar mass density up to z<4. Our results are
consistent with previous studies and we find a considerable number of low-mass
galaxies (M<10^{10.5}) at the redshift range 3<z<4. The stellar-mass dependent
correlation functions of our sample galaxies show clear evolution and they
connect to that in the local universe consistently. Also, the massive galaxies
show strong clustering throughout our studied redshift range. The correlation
length of massive galaxies rapidly decreases from z=4 to 2. We also find some
high mass density regions of massive galaxies at 1.4<z<2.5 in our sample, which
may be candidate progenitors of the present-day clusters of galaxies. At this
redshift range, massive star-forming galaxies are the dominant population
making up the structures and the passively evolving galaxies show stronger
clustering and they may have formed earlier than those star-forming galaxies.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 2 table
First Data Release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program
The Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) is a three-layered
imaging survey aimed at addressing some of the most outstanding questions in
astronomy today, including the nature of dark matter and dark energy. The
survey has been awarded 300 nights of observing time at the Subaru Telescope
and it started in March 2014. This paper presents the first public data release
of HSC-SSP. This release includes data taken in the first 1.7 years of
observations (61.5 nights) and each of the Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep layers
covers about 108, 26, and 4 square degrees down to depths of i~26.4, ~26.5, and
~27.0 mag, respectively (5sigma for point sources). All the layers are observed
in five broad bands (grizy), and the Deep and UltraDeep layers are observed in
narrow bands as well. We achieve an impressive image quality of 0.6 arcsec in
the i-band in the Wide layer. We show that we achieve 1-2 per cent PSF
photometry (rms) both internally and externally (against Pan-STARRS1), and ~10
mas and 40 mas internal and external astrometric accuracy, respectively. Both
the calibrated images and catalogs are made available to the community through
dedicated user interfaces and database servers. In addition to the pipeline
products, we also provide value-added products such as photometric redshifts
and a collection of public spectroscopic redshifts. Detailed descriptions of
all the data can be found online. The data release website is
