In this paper, an effective method to obtain all nonnegative integer minimal support vectors (U4,V4) at level 4 for an arbitrary homogeneous / inhomogeneous solution of a matrix equation A x = b (A∈Zmxn, b∈Zmxl) starting from nonnegative rational number minimal support vectors (U3,V3) at level 3 is proposed. Although V4 has been derived from all minimal vectors (U5,V5) of level 5 which are obtained starting from vectors at levell, 2, or 3, so far, this proposed method for (U4,V4) gives us a big shortcut comparing with them. However, it is pointed out that obtaining (U5,V5) of level 5 from (U4,V4) of level 4 is difficult

Long-term persisting hybrid swarm and geographic difference in hybridization pattern: genetic consequences of secondary contact between two Vincetoxicum species (Apocynaceae-Asclepiadoideae)

Background: During glacial periods, glacial advances caused temperate plant extirpation or retreat into localized warmer areas, and subsequent postglacial glacial retreats resulted in range expansions, which facilitated secondary contact of previously allopatric isolated lineages. The evolutionary outcomes of secondary contact, including hybrid zones, dynamic hybrid swarm, and resultant hybrid speciation, depends on the strengths of reproductive barriers that have arisen through epistatic and pleiotropic effects during allopatric isolation. The aim of this study was to demonstrate refugia isolation and subsequent secondary contact between two perennial Asclepioid species and to assess the genetic consequences of the secondary contact. We modeled the range shift of two ecologically distinct Vincetoxicum species using the species distribution model (SDM) and assessed the genetic consequences of secondary contact by combining morphological and genetic approaches. We performed morphometric analysis (592 individuals) and examined 10 nuclear microsatellites (671 individuals) in V. atratum, V. japonicum, and putative hybrid populations. Results: Multivariate analysis, model-based Bayesian analysis, and non-model-based discriminant analysis of principal components confirmed the hybridization between V. atratum and V. japonicum. High pollen fertility and a lack of linkage disequilibrium suggested that the hybrid populations may be self-sustaining and have persisted since V. atratum and V. japonicum came into contact during the post-glacial period. Moreover, our findings show that the pattern of hybridization between V. atratum and V. japonicum is unidirectional and differs among populations. Geographically-isolated hybrid populations exist as genetically distinct hybrid swarms that consist of V. atratum-like genotypes, V. japonicum-like genotypes, or admixed genotypes. In addition, Bayesian-based clustering analysis and coalescent-based estimates of long-term gene flow showed patterns of introgressive hybridization in three morphologically ‘pure’ V. japonicum populations. Conclusion: In this study, we demonstrated that climatic oscillations during the Quaternary period likely led to species range shift and subsequently secondary contact. Hybrid populations may be self-sustaining and have persisted since V. atratum and V. japonicum came into contact during the post-glacial period. Pattern of hybridization between V. atratum and V. japonicum is unidirectional and differs among populations. We concluded that these differences in the genetic consequences of secondary contact are caused by historical colonization processes and/or natural selection

This is the first report describing neurogenic factor of Netrin-1 related to chondrogenesis or osteogenesis in a human cells. Netrin is a morphogenetic factor that induces a growth cone of an axial filament of the nervous system. However, the roles of Netrin in chondrogenesis or osteogenesis are not yet understood. We analyzed the relationship between Netrin and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) in chondrogenesis or osteogenesis, using a human chondrocyte-like cell line (USAC), which also retains multi-potency to differentiate into osteoblasts and adipocytes. Netrin-1 mRNA was decreased in USAC cells, though the expression was increased during osteogenic differentiation at the stage when osteocalcin mRNA were increased by BMP-2. Furthermore, inhibition of Netrin-1 gene increased Cbfa1 mRNA expression, and decreased Sox9 mRNA expression. We also found that Netrin-1was strongly expressed in immature chondrocytes of cartilage-like tissues that were formed in an exo vivo experiment with diffusion chambers. The se findings indicate that Netrin-1 and BMP-2 regulates in the stage dependent process of mesenchymal cell differentiation to chondrocytes or osteoblasts.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography for the management of portal hypertension in cirrhosis

    Get PDF
Portal hypertension is a major pathophysiological condition in patients with cirrhosis. This accounts for the occurrence and severity of the various manifestations. The degree is determined by the portal pressure or hepatic venous pressure gradients, both of which are obtained by invasive interventional radiological procedures. Ultrasound (US) is a simple and minimally invasive imaging modality for the diagnosis of liver diseases. Owing to the availability of microbubble-based contrast agents and the development of imaging modes corresponding to contrast effects, contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) has become popular worldwide for the detailed evaluation of hepatic hemodynamics, diffuse liver disease, and focal hepatic lesions. Recent advancements in digital technology have enabled contrast-based demonstrations with improved resolution, leading to a wider range of applications. This review article describes the current role, benefits, and limitations of CEUS in the management of portal hypertension

Formulae Based on Biomathematics to Estimate the Standard Value of Fetal Growth of Japanese

We devised biomathematics-based formulae to estimate the standard values of fetal growth of Japanese after 22 weeks' gestation. The growth rates of bi-parietal diameter (BPD), abdominal circumference (AC), femur length (FL), and estimated fetal body weight (EFBW) at the time of gestation were assumed to be proportional to the product of the value at the time and the rest value of an unknown maximum value, respectively. The EFBW was also assumed to follow a multiple logistic function of BPD, AC and FL to fit the standard values of Japanese fetuses published by the Japan Society of Ultrasonics in Medicine. The Mann-Whitney test was used for statistical analysis. The values as a function of gestational day, t, were as follows: BPD(t)=99.6/(1+exp (2.725−0.01837*t)) (mm); AC(t)=39.7/(1+exp (2.454−0.01379*t)) (cm); FL(t)=79.6/(1+exp (2.851−0.01710*t)) (mm); EFBW(t)=8045.1/(1+exp (6.028−0.06582*BPD(t)−0.1469*AC(t)+ 0.07377*FL(t))) (g). EFBW as a function of BPD, AC and FL was as follows: EFBW=8045.1/(1+exp (4.747+ 0.02584*BPD+0.1010*AC−0.1416*FL)) (g). When the BPD, AC and FL were at −2 standard deviation (SD), −1SD, mean and + 2SD, the EFBW values calculated by the formula were statistically closer to the standard values than conventional formulas with p-values of 4.871×10−7, 4.228×10−7, 9.777×10−7 and 0.028, respectively. The formulae based on biomathematics might be useful to estimate the fetal growth standard values

Measuring the Leptonic CP Phase in νμνμ\nu_{\mu} \to \nu_{\mu} Oscillations

In νμνμ\nu_{\mu} \to \nu_{\mu} oscillations, we find that the effect of the CP phase δ\delta becomes large in the region E2000E2000 km. In this region, the change of the probability in this channel reaches about 0.4 due to the CP phase effect beyond our expectation in the case of large 1-3 mixing angle. Furthermore, the CP phase effect have almost same sign over the region E>0.5E>0.5 GeV so that one may find the signal of CP violation by measuring the total rate only. As an example, we use an experimental setup and demonstrate that the allowed region is limited to one by combined analysis of νe\nu_e and νμ\nu_{\mu} events although there remain three allowed regions by the analysis of νe\nu_e events alone.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, version to appear in PL
