    Effect of Stem-Based Activities Conducted in Science Classes on Various Variables

    The aim of this study was to examine the effect of STEM-based activities conducted in fourth-grade primary school science classes on students’ scientific process skills, problem-solving skills and academic success. The study used the experimental model and was carried out according to the pretest-posttest experimental design with a control group. The study group of the research was made up of fourth-grade students at a primary school in the centre of Karaman province. The “Basic Skills Scale”, “Problem-Solving Skills Scale” and “Test of Academic Success” were used as data collection tools. Another finding of the study was that the posttest academic success test scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the students in the control group. This finding reveals that the implementation of a STEM-based activity on the subject of simple electrical circuits was effective on academic success (U=109.000 p<.01). Following the instruction carried out on the experimental and control groups, there was no significant difference in the mean posttest Basic Skills Scale scores of students in the experimental group on which the STEM-based activities were applied. Moreover, it was determined that the mean posttest Problem-Solving Skills scores of students in the experimental and control groups participating in the study did not show a significant difference (U=201.500 p>.05). This finding reveals that the STEM-based activities did not have a significant effect on basic process skills or problem-solving skills

    Comparison of the diagnostic value of symmetric dimethylarginine, cystatin C, and creatinine for detection of decreased glomerular filtration rate in dogs

    BACKGROUND: Early detection of decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in dogs is challenging. Current methods are insensitive and new biomarkers are required. OBJECTIVE: To compare overall diagnostic performance of serum symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) and serum cystatin C to serum creatinine, for detection of decreased GFR in clinically stable dogs, with or without chronic kidney disease (CKD). ANIMALS: Ninety-seven client-owned dogs: 67 dogs with a diagnosis or suspicion of CKD and 30 healthy dogs were prospectively included. METHODS: Prospective diagnostic accuracy study. All dogs underwent physical examination, systemic arterial blood pressure measurement, urinalysis, hematology and blood biochemistry analysis, cardiac and urinary ultrasound examinations, and scintigraphy for estimation of glomerular filtration rate (mGFR). Frozen serum was used for batch analysis of SDMA and cystatin C. RESULTS: The area under the curve of creatinine, SDMA, and cystatin C for detection of an mGFR <30.8 mL/min/L was 0.98 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.93-1.0), 0.96 (95% CI, 0.91-0.99), and 0.87 (95% CI, 0.79-0.93), respectively. The sensitivity of both creatinine and SDMA at their prespecified cutoffs (115 μmol/L [1.3 mg/dL] and 14 μg/dL) for detection of an abnormal mGFR was 90%. The specificity was 90% for creatinine and 87% for SDMA. When adjusting the cutoff for cystatin C to correspond to a diagnostic sensitivity of 90% (0.49 mg/L), specificity was lower (72%) than that of creatinine and SDMA. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Overall diagnostic performance of creatinine and SDMA for detection of decreased mGFR was similar.     A Source Domain Extension Method for Inductive Transfer Learning Based on Flipping Output

    Transfer learning aims for high accuracy by applying knowledge of source domains for which data collection is easy in order to target domains where data collection is difficult, and has attracted attention in recent years because of its significant potential to enable the application of machine learning to a wide range of real-world problems. However, since the technique is user-dependent, with data prepared as a source domain which in turn becomes a knowledge source for transfer learning, it often involves the adoption of inappropriate data. In such cases, the accuracy may be reduced due to “negative transfer.” Thus, in this paper, we propose a novel transfer learning method that utilizes the flipping output technique to provide multiple labels in the source domain. The accuracy of the proposed method is statistically demonstrated to be significantly better than that of the conventional transfer learning method, and its effect size is as high as 0.9, showing high performance

    Experimental Signature of Medium Modifications for rho and omega Mesons in the 12 GeV p + A Reactions

    The invariant mass spectra of e+e- pairs produced in 12-GeV proton-induced nuclear reactions are measured at the KEK Proton-Synchrotron. On the low-mass side of the omega meson peak, a significant enhancement over the known hadronic sources has been observed.     Fiber Optik Fabry-Perot Akustik Sensörler için Yeni Bir Diyafram Malzemesi Olarak 2D GaSe Benzetimi

    Algılanacak akustik/basınç sinyalinin şiddet ve frekans değerine duyarlı uçlar üretmek diyafram tasarımının doğru yapılmasıyla sağlanır. Kullanılan diyafram malzemesinin hem geometrik boyutları hem de yapısal özellikleri (yoğunluk, Young modülü, Poisson oranı gibi) sensör performansını etkileyen unsurlardır. Bu durumdan ötürü literatürde farklı tipte diyafram malzemeleri araştırılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada diyafram tabanlı fiber optik Fabry-Perot (FP) akustik sensörlerde kilit rol oynayan diyafram performansı üzerine hesaplamalar verilmiştir. Hesaplamalarda diyafram olarak grafen benzeri iki boyutlu (2D) Galyum Selenit (GaSe) kullanılmıştır. 2D malzemeler sınıfına ait GaSe malzemesi fiber optik FP akustik sensör uç tasarımında diyafram olarak ilk defa hesaplanmış ve benzetim yoluyla sensör ucunun performansı teorik olarak elde edilmiştir. Teorik hesaplamalar ve benzetimler neticesinde 2D GaSe malzemesi fiber optik FP akustik sensör uç üretiminde diyafram olarak kullanılabileceği öngörülmüştür. Oluşturulan uçların frekans cevapları ve akustik basınca duyarlılığı teorik olarak hesaplanmış ve literatürde kullanılan diğer geleneksel malzemelerden elde edilen sonuçlar ile karşılaştırılarak verilmiştir. Sensör görünürlüğü ve frekansı açısından GaSe malzemesinin kullanım alanına göre alternatifler sunduğu görülmüştür

    The spectral function of the omega meson in nuclear matter from a coupled-channel resonance model

    We calculate the spectral function of the omega meson in nuclear matter at zero temperature by means of the low-density theorem. The omega N forward scattering amplitude is calculated within a unitary coupled-channel effective Lagrangian model that has been applied successfully to the combined analysis of pion- and photon-induced reactions. While the peak of the omega spectral distribution is shifted only slightly, we find a considerable broadening of the omega meson due to resonance-hole excitations. For omega mesons at rest with respect to the surrounding nuclear medium, we find an additional width of about 60 MeV at saturation density.Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, added short discussio
