    Entrepreneurial Orientation and Firm Performance in the Context of Upper Echelon Theory

    Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) is a firm-level phenomenon, which involves the firm’s prospects to take risks, be proactive, and be innovative. Most of the research assumes a positive EO-performance relationship adopting the EO-as-advantage perspective without providing enough theoretical foundations of the way EO enhances performance. This paper provides insights into the EO and firm performance relationship looking into the EO-as-experimentation perspective. Through EO-as-experimentation perspective, we argue for the importance of looking into the differential effects of each of the EO dimensions on firm performance in active and inactive firms. We hypothesized that the effect of each of the proactiveness and innovativeness dimension of EO on firm performance is positive among active firms and negative among inactive firms. Whereas risk taking dimension of EO is negative among active and inactive firms. Based on the results of firm fixed effect regression some empirical support for the hypotheses is presented and discussed

    Spectroscopy of 13B via the 13C(t,3He) reaction at 115 AMeV

    Gamow-Teller and dipole transitions to final states in 13B were studied via the 13C(t,3He) reaction at Et = 115 AMeV. Besides the strong Gamow-Teller transition to the 13B ground state, a weaker Gamow-Teller transition to a state at 3.6 MeV was found. This state was assigned a spin-parity of 3/2- by comparison with shell-model calculations using the WBP and WBT interactions which were modified to allow for mixing between nhw and (n+2)hw configurations. This assignment agrees with a recent result from a lifetime measurement of excited states in 13B. The shell-model calculations also explained the relatively large spectroscopic strength measured for a low-lying 1/2+ state at 4.83 MeV in 13B. The cross sections for dipole transitions up to Ex(13B)= 20 MeV excited via the 13C(t,3He) reaction were also compared with the shell-model calculations. The theoretical cross sections exceeded the data by a factor of about 1.8, which might indicate that the dipole excitations are "quenched". Uncertainties in the reaction calculations complicate that interpretation.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    The dietary triterpenoid 18α-Glycyrrhetinic acid protects from MMC-induced genotoxicity through the ERK/Nrf2 pathway.

    18α-Glycyrrhetinic acid (18α-GA) is a bioactive triterpenoid that has been shown to activate the nuclear factor (erythroid-derived-2)-like 2 (Nrf2), the main transcription factor that orchestrates the cellular antioxidant response, in both cellular and organismal context. Although various beneficial properties of 18α-GA have been revealed, including its anti-oxidation and anti-aging activity, its possible protective effect against DNA damage has never been addressed. In this study, we investigated the potential beneficial properties of 18α-GA against DNA damage induced by mitomycin C (MMC) treatment. Using human primary fibroblasts exposed to MMC following pre-treatment with 18α-GA, we reveal an Nrf2-mediated protective effect against MMC-induced cell death that depends on extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling. In total, our results reveal an additional beneficial effect of the Nrf2 activator 18α-GA, suggesting that this important phytochemical compound is a potential candidate in preventive and/or therapeutic schemes against conditions (such as aging) or diseases that are characterized by both oxidative stress and DNA damage

    Resumen. Myriophyllum aquaticum (Vell.) Verdc. es nativa de Sudamérica con distribución pantropical. Esta especie ha sido citada como dioica, monoica y polígama. El objetivo de este trabajo es contribuir a la discusión sobre su condición sexual, basada en material de herbario, y apoyada por observaciones de campo. Se examinó material de herbario de Argentina. En la Reserva Natural de Punta Lara (Buenos Aires, Argentina), se muestrearon periódicamente veinte ramas para registrar el sexo de las flores presentes en cada verticilo durante el período de floración de 2002. Tanto en material de herbario, como en el campo, observamos especímenes con ramas con flores femeninas, especímenes con ramas con flores masculinas y especímenes con flores femeninas y masculinas en la misma rama. Algunos de estos materiales presentan frutos. Nuestras observaciones apoyan la idea que M. aquaticum no es una especie estrictamente dioica, al menos en Argentina. This species has been cited as dioecious, monoecious and polygamous. The purpose of this paper was to contribute to the discussion of its sexual condition, based on herbarium material, and supported by field observations. Herbarium material from Argentina was examined. Also, twenty branches from the Punta Lara Nature Reserve (Buenos Aires, Argentina) were periodically sampled to record the sex of flowers present on each whorl during the flowering period of 2002. Both in herbarium material and in field, we observed specimens with branches bearing either female or male, and specimens with female and male flowers on the same branch. Some of these materials have also fruits. Our observations support the idea that M. aquaticum is not a strictly dioecious species, at least in Argentina

    Development of an approximate method for quantum optical models and their pseudo-Hermicity

    An approximate method is suggested to obtain analytical expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the some quantum optical models. The method is based on the Lie-type transformation of the Hamiltonians. In a particular case it is demonstrated that E×ϵE\times \epsilon Jahn-Teller Hamiltonian can easily be solved within the framework of the suggested approximation. The method presented here is conceptually simple and can easily be extended to the other quantum optical models. We also show that for a purely imaginary coupling the E×ϵE\times \epsilon Hamiltonian becomes non-Hermitian but Pσ0P\sigma _{0}-symmetric.     The 150^{150}Nd(3^3He,tt) and 150^{150}Sm(tt,3^3He) reactions with applications to ββ\beta\beta decay of 150^{150}Nd

    The 150^{150}Nd(3^3He,tt) reaction at 140 MeV/u and 150^{150}Sm(tt,3^3He) reaction at 115 MeV/u were measured, populating excited states in 150^{150}Pm. The transitions studied populate intermediate states of importance for the (neutrinoless) ββ\beta\beta decay of 150^{150}Nd to 150^{150}Sm. Monopole and dipole contributions to the measured excitation-energy spectra were extracted by using multipole decomposition analyses. The experimental results were compared with theoretical calculations obtained within the framework of Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation (QRPA), which is one of the main methods employed for estimating the half-life of the neutrinoless ββ\beta\beta decay (0νββ0\nu\beta\beta) of 150^{150}Nd. The present results thus provide useful information on the neutrino responses for evaluating the 0νββ0\nu\beta\beta and 2νββ2\nu\beta\beta matrix elements. The 2νββ2\nu\beta\beta matrix element calculated from the Gamow-Teller transitions through the lowest 1+1^{+} state in the intermediate nucleus is maximally about half of that deduced from the half-life measured in 2νββ2\nu\beta\beta direct counting experiments and at least several transitions through 1+1^{+} intermediate states in 150^{150}Pm are required to explain the 2νββ2\nu\beta\beta half-life. Because Gamow-Teller transitions in the 150^{150}Sm(tt,3^3He) experiment are strongly Pauli-blocked, the extraction of Gamow-Teller strengths was complicated by the excitation of the 2ω2\hbar\omega, ΔL=0\Delta L=0, ΔS=1\Delta S=1 isovector spin-flip giant monopole resonance (IVSGMR). However, the near absence of Gamow-Teller transition strength made it possible to cleanly identify this resonance, and the strength observed is consistent with the full exhaustion of the non-energy-weighted sum rule for the IVSGMR.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 2 table

    An Improved Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiment

    A new measurement of the neutron EDM, using Ramsey's method of separated oscillatory fields, is in preparation at the new high intensity source of ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland (PSI). The existence of a non-zero nEDM would violate both parity and time reversal symmetry and, given the CPT theorem, might lead to a discovery of new CP violating mechanisms. Already the current upper limit for the nEDM (|d_n|<2.9E-26 e.cm) constrains some extensions of the Standard Model. The new experiment aims at a two orders of magnitude reduction of the experimental uncertainty, to be achieved mainly by (1) the higher UCN flux provided by the new PSI source, (2) better magnetic field control with improved magnetometry and (3) a double chamber configuration with opposite electric field directions. The first stage of the experiment will use an upgrade of the RAL/Sussex/ILL group's apparatus (which has produced the current best result) moved from Institut Laue-Langevin to PSI. The final accuracy will be achieved in a further step with a new spectrometer, presently in the design phase.Comment: Flavor Physics & CP Violation Conference, Taipei, 200
