Factors Affecting Loss in Quality of South Dakota Eggs

    Get PDF
This study is an attempt to determine certain marketing practices of South Dakota\u27s egg producers and handlers. The specific objectives of the study are (1) to assemble information relating to those factors which cause loss in quality of eggs as they pass from the producer through the various marketing channels and (2) to find a basis for recommending and to recommend , practices which will eliminate some oft the loss in quality. This survey is based on a survey made by the North Central Regional Committee which complied data concerning the loss in quality of eggs in the North Central Region. The results obtained in this study, incorporate some of the materials used in the regional study, but limit the information as much as possible to that which will allow a basis of comparison for South Dakota. It includes only the information which is considered to be of definitive value to the South Dakota egg producers

Recent Dissertations on Service and Service-Learning Topics: Volume II

This is the second edition of the Learn and Serve America National Service-Learning Clearinghouse review of dissertations on service, service-learning, and related topics. In the first edition we identified approximately 110 studies, limiting the search to studies conducted from 1990 to the present. In this volume we provide information and abstracts on more than 200 studies- and expand the time they were produced to periods prior to 1990. Some date as early as the 1970s. The goals for doing this literature review are many. First, we want to continue to dispel the notion (as mentioned in the first version) that there is little research on service and service-learning. Second, we wanted to focus on dissertation studies, because they tend to identify the most current subjects and interests of graduate students (and programs) throughout the country on topics related to education. If service-learning is ever to become a mainstream topic in educational circles, then clearly there needs to be widespread interest in graduate schools to study service as a viable and important topic . Third, we sought information about who was actually conducting these studies and who on these campuses was sponsoring such works. Our interest in identifying authors and sponsors was to create an information system that could be used to connect these researchers so they might work collaboratively to improve the quality of knowledge and research on service-learning. Our final goal is to encourage others who are doing research on service-learning and related topics to review this document so they can add known studies that are not included in the current database. By working together, we can hopefully develop the most extensive and accurate information piece on dissertations conducted on or about service-learning

Pre-K in Texas: A Critical Component for Academic Success

    Get PDF
With funding from the Meadows Foundation and the Miles Foundation, researchers at CHILDREN AT RISK engaged in a study to examine how participation in Texas public PreKindergarten Pre-K1 is associated with performance on the 3rd Grade State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Reading assessment. CHILDREN AT RISK tracked approximately 47,000 students from the 2010-2011 school year to the 2014-2015 school year.2 These students began public Pre-K in 2010 and completed 3rd grade in 2015. The study focused on five major independent school districts (ISD) in Texas (Austin ISD, Dallas ISD, Fort Worth ISD, Houston ISD, and San Antonio ISD) and 12 additional school districts surrounding these major metropolitan areas.3 The purpose of this report is twofold. The first purpose is to educate parents, policy makers, and the public about the association between Texas public Pre-K and 3rd grade STAAR Reading outcomes. Across campuses and students, this study examines the relationship between varying levels of public Pre-K participation and STAAR Reading scores by comparing 3rd grade STAAR Reading means among multiple sub-groups of economically disadvantaged students. The second purpose is to offer policy recommendations that will increase access to and improve the quality of the Texas public Pre-K program on behalf of parents, taxpayers, and—most importantly—children

Rumor has it that there is very little research on service and service-leaming. A brief literature review of dissertations from 1990 onward revealed that over 110 studies have been completed on service and related topics. So much for the rumor! Our intent in performing this literature review is to identify academic studies that have been completed in the past several years on issues related to service-learning. Covering a variety of interest areas and related topics, the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse is initially interested in identifying studies that add to the knowledge base on service-learning. The collection of titles, authors, and abstract summaries presented here is designed simply to inform the field of the number and diversity of studies available. We make no claims about the accuracy, integrity, value or strength of each work. That decision is left to the reader. We provide only information about the studies and where and how they can be obtained. We encourage you to seek out the researchers identified and to contact them for more information about the nature and content of the studies. We anticipate that this compilation will be the first of several volumes on current dissertation work in American universities. We expect in future publications to actually review the material and make critical comments about the value of the contributions to the field of service-learning. We hope that by publishing this work we will encourage others who have completed studies or are designing and implementing dissertation research to contact us and share their projects with the Clearinghouse. We will do our best to make sure this information is circulated among and between service-learning professionals. As you review this document, please feel free to send your comments to the Clearinghouse or discuss the work on our listserv. Access to our website, listserv and the 800 number to the Clearinghouse are listed on the cover of this document. Your feedback will help us determine what materials to include in future editions

Topic Bibliography on Resiliency and At Risk Youth Topic Bibliography

This publication is the result of a comprehensive review of the literature on resiliency and at-risk youth. Some of the most frequently asked questions at the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse are geared toward service-learning as it relates to working with at-risk youth. Often the questions are about research on impacts of service-learning on at-risk youth, or about materials that have been developed to help start service-learning programs for at-risk youth. Information on program examples and national organizations is also in demand. The purpose of this bibliography is to direct you to some of the most reliable, innovative, and popular resources currently available in these areas

Information sharing and user behavior in Internet-enabled Peer-to-Peer Lending Systems: an empirical study

    Get PDF
Internet-based information systems (IS) have enabled various forms of collective intelligence, action, and resources (e.g. open source software, innovation marketplaces, crowdsourcing, and crowdfunding). Within the domain of crowdfunding, Internet-enabled Peer-to-Peer Lending Systems (IP2PLS) have emerged as a disruptive technology, with implications for the financial services sector, business capitalization strategies, and personal and community development. IS research investigating user behavior in IP2PLS has revealed the saliency of social identity and personal transparency (as expressed through information sharing) in such systems. Prior research has largely focused on a small number of IP2PLS providers, thus this study examines a very large but under-researched platform. The study tests a theoretical model based on Social Identity Theory and prior IP2PLS studies, through an analysis of 116,667 loan records, and a subsequent analysis of 1000 manually coded records, to investigate the impact of information sharing on user (lenders and borrowers) behavior. The study reveals the importance of social (vs financial) data, and further reveals relationships that frequently contradict prior findings from other IP2PLS. The study thus implies the need for a more heterogeneous view of the IP2PLS domain, and the need to more fully understand as systems that support user behavior by enabling social information exchanges

The novel MAPT mutation K298E:mechanisms of mutant tau toxicity, brain pathology and tau expression in induced fibroblast-derived neurons

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) consists of a group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by behavioural and executive impairment, language disorders and motor dysfunction. About 20-30 % of cases are inherited in a dominant manner. Mutations in the microtubule-associated protein tau gene (MAPT) cause frontotemporal dementia and parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP-17T). Here we report a novel MAPT mutation (K298E) in exon 10 in a patient with FTDP-17T. Neuropathological studies of post-mortem brain showed widespread neuronal loss and gliosis and abundant deposition of hyperphosphorylated tau in neurons and glia. Molecular studies demonstrated that the K298E mutation affects both protein function and alternative mRNA splicing. Fibroblasts from a skin biopsy of the proband taken at post-mortem were directly induced into neurons (iNs) and expressed both 3-repeat and 4-repeat tau isoforms. As well as contributing new knowledge on MAPT mutations in FTDP-17T, this is the first example of the successful generation of iNs from skin cells retrieved post-mortem
