    Higher-dimensional resolution of dilatonic black hole singularities

    We show that the four-dimensional extreme dilaton black hole with dilaton coupling constant a=p/(p+2)a= \sqrt{p/(p+2)} can be interpreted as a {\it completely non-singular}, non-dilatonic, black pp-brane in (4+p)(4+p) dimensions provided that pp is {\it odd}. Similar results are obtained for multi-black holes and dilatonic extended objects in higher spacetime dimensions. The non-singular black pp-brane solutions include the self-dual three brane of ten-dimensional N=2B supergravity and a multi-fivebrane solution of eleven-dimensional supergravity. In the case of a supersymmetric non-dilatonic pp-brane solution of a supergravity theory, we show that it saturates a bound on the energy per unit pp-volume.Comment: 27 pages, R/94/28, UCSBTH-94-35 (Comments added to the discussion section

    Evaluation of CBS 600 carburized steel as a gear material

    Gear endurance tests were conducted with one lot of consumable-electrode vacuum-melted (CVM) AISI 9310 gears and one lot of air-melt CBS 600 gears. The gears were 8 pitch with a pitch diameter of 8.89 centimeters (3.5 in.). Bench-type rolling-element fatigue tests were also conducted with one lot of CVM AISI 9310, three lots of CVM CBS 600, and one of air-melt CBS 600 material. The rolling-element bars were 0.952 centimeter (0.375 in.) in diameter. The CBS 600 material exhibited pitting fatigue lives in both rolling-element specimens and gears at least equivalent to that of CVM AISI 9310. Tooth fracture failure occurred with the CBS 600 gears after overrunning a fatigue spall, but it did not occur with the CVM AISI 9310 gears. Tooth fracture in the CBS 600 was attributed to excessive carbon content in the case, excessive case depth, and a higher than normal core hardness

    Membrane solitons in eight-dimensional hyper-Kaehler backgrounds

    We derive the BPS equations satisfied by lump solitons in (2+1)(2+1)-dimensional sigma models with toric 8-dimensional hyper-K\"ahler (HK8{HK}_8) target spaces and check they preserve 1/2 of the supersymmetry. We show how these solitons are realised in M theory as M2-branes wrapping holomorphic 2-cycles in the \bE^{1,2}\times {HK}_8 background. Using the Îş\kappa-symmetry of a probe M2-brane in this background we determine the supersymmetry they preserve, and note that there is a discrepancy in the fraction of supersymmetry preserved by these solitons as viewed from the low energy effective sigma model description of the M2-brane dynamics or the full M theory. Toric HK8{HK}_8 manifolds are dual to a Hanany-Witten setup of D3-branes suspended between 5-branes. In this picture the lumps correspond to vortices of the three dimensional N=3{\mathcal N}=3 or N=4{\mathcal N}=4 theory.Comment: 12+1 pages. LaTex. v2: Typos corrected and references adde

    Sigma-model soliton intersections from exceptional calibrations

    A first-order `BPS' equation is obtained for 1/8 supersymmetric intersections of soliton-membranes (lumps) of supersymmetric (4+1)-dimensional massless sigma models, and a special non-singular solution is found that preserves 1/4 supersymmetry. For 4-dimensional hyper-K\"ahler target spaces (HK4HK_4) the BPS equation is shown to be the low-energy limit of the equation for a Cayley-calibrated 4-surface in \bE^4\times HK_4. Similar first-order equations are found for stationary intersections of Q-lump-membranes of the massive sigma model, but now generic solutions preserve either 1/8 supersymmetry or no supersymmetry, depending on the time orientation.Comment: 21 pages.     Variability of Young Massive Stars in the Galactic Super Star Cluster Westerlund 1

    This paper presents the first optical variability study of the Westerlund 1 super star cluster in search of massive eclipsing binary systems. A total of 129 new variable stars have been identified, including the discovery of 4 eclipsing binaries that are cluster members, 1 additional candidate, 8 field binaries, 19 field delta Scuti stars, 3 field W UMa eclipsing binaries, 13 other periodic variables and 81 long period or non-periodic variables. These include the known luminous blue variable, the B[e] star, 11 Wolf-Rayet stars, several supergiants, and other reddened stars that are likely members of Westerlund 1. The bright X-ray source corresponding to the Wolf-Rayet star WR77o (B) is found to be a 3.51 day eclipsing binary. The discovery of a reddened detached eclipsing binary system implies the first identification of main-sequence stars in Westerlund 1.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal.     Revisiting the Rigidly Rotating Magnetosphere model for sigma Ori E. I. Observations and Data Analysis

    We have obtained 18 new high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the B2Vp star sigma Ori E with both the Narval and ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeters. The aim of these observations is to test, with modern data, the assumptions of the Rigidly Rotating Magnetosphere (RRM) model of Townsend & Owocki (2005), applied to the specific case of sigma Ori E by Townsend et al. (2005). This model includes a substantially offset dipole magnetic field configuration, and approximately reproduces previous observational variations in longitudinal field strength, photometric brightness, and Halpha emission. We analyze new spectroscopy, including H I, He I, C II, Si III and Fe III lines, confirming the diversity of variability in photospheric lines, as well as the double S-wave variation of circumstellar hydrogen. Using the multiline analysis method of Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD), new, more precise longitudinal magnetic field measurements reveal a substantial variance between the shapes of the observed and RRM model time-varying field. The phase resolved Stokes V profiles of He I 5876 A and 6678 A lines are fit poorly by synthetic profiles computed from the magnetic topology assumed by Townsend et al. (2005). These results challenge the offset dipole field configuration assumed in the application of the RRM model to sigma Ori E, and indicate that future models of its magnetic field should also include complex, higher-order components.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures.
