The Potential of Plasma Screen Technology in Small Group Teaching for Dental Undergraduates
AIM: This study was devised to ascertain the opinion of dental undergraduate students as to whether they preferred observing a live demonstration as a group directly at the workbench or indirectly on a remote Plasma Screen. In addition, to identify whether the students observing remotely believed that they had been disadvantaged by the inability to question the demonstrator during the
demonstration.
METHOD: 17 students divided into two groups observed a live demonstration of a laboratory technical procedure either at the workbench, or remotely on a Plasma Screen with the aid of video cameras. They subsequently observed a second demonstration with the roles reversed. Questionnaires were used to obtain the studentsâ
views of their ability to see and interact with the demonstrator.
RESULTS: The responses of the students observing the demonstration on the Plasma Screen indicated that they felt that they were able to see the demonstration more clearly than those observing at the workbench (p=0.04). Those observing on the Plasma Screen first, indicated this in particular (p=0.03). The majority of students acknowledged their inability to ask questions when observing on the Plasma Screen and supported the idea that the Plasma Screen should be used to complement the demonstration
at the workbench.
CONCLUSION: Plasma Screen technology has considerable potential as a teaching tool for small groups of student, where it can afford significantly superior views of practicalprocedures. The students considered that the Plasma Screen would be best employed to provide close up views to supplement a live demonstration. The apparatus may be used remotely more successfully if videoconferencing technology were also employed to facilitate
interaction with the demonstrator
Outcome measures in facial prosthesis research: a systematic review
Statement of problem
Facial prosthesis research uses a wide variety of outcome measures, which results in challenges when comparing the effectiveness of interventions among studies. Consensus is lacking regarding the most appropriate and meaningful outcome measures to use in facial prosthesis research to capture important perspectives.
Purpose
The purpose of the systematic review was to identify and synthesize outcome measures used in facial prosthesis research.
Material and methods
Electronic searches were performed in 11 databases (including nonpeer-reviewed literature). The citations were searched, and expert societies were contacted to identify additional studies. Inclusion criteria comprised studies of participants with facial defects who required or had received prosthetic rehabilitation with an external facial prosthesis. Exclusion criteria comprised participants with ocular prostheses, case reports, case series with fewer than 5 participants, laboratory-based studies, and studies published before 1980. Study selection was performed independently by 2 reviewers. Discrepancies were resolved through discussion or by a third reviewer. Outcome measures were synthesized with a categorization approach based on the perspective, theme, and subtheme of the outcome measures. Quality assessment was performed with an appraisal tool that enabled evaluation of studies with diverse designs.
Results
Database searching identified 13â058 records, and 7406 remained after duplications were removed. After initial screening, 189 potentially relevant records remained, and 186 full texts were located (98% retrieval rate). After full-text screening, 124 records were excluded. Citation searches and contact with expert societies identified 4 further records. In total, 69 articles (grouped into 65 studies) were included. Studies were categorized as per the perspective of their outcome measures, with the following findings: patient-reported (74% of studies), clinical indicators (34%), clinician-reported (8%), multiple viewpoints (6%), and independent observer-reported (3%). Patient-reported outcome measures included tools to assess satisfaction, quality of life, and psychologic health. Variability in the choice of outcome measures was evident among the studies, with many self-designed, unvalidated, condition-specific questionnaires reported. A greater number of outcome measure themes emerged over time; themes such as service delivery and health state utility have recently been evaluated.
Conclusions
Over the past 40 years, facial prosthesis research has focused on patient-reported outcome measures. Outcome measures relating to other perspectives have been used less frequently, although new themes appear to be emerging in the literature. Future research should use outcome measures with appropriate measurement properties for use with facial prosthetics
SST dynamics at different scales: evaluating the oceanographic model resolution skill to represent SST processes in the Southern Ocean
In this study we demonstrate the many strengths of scale analysis: we use it to evaluate the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO) model skill in representing sea surface temperature (SST) in the Southern Ocean (SO) by comparing three model resolutions: 1/12°, 1/4° and 1°. We show that whilst 4â5 times resolution scale is sufficient for each model resolution to reproduce the magnitude of satellite Earth Observation (EO) SST spatial variability to within ±10%, the representation of ⌠100 km SST variability patterns is substantially (e.g âŒ50% at 750 km) improved by increasing model resolution from 1° to 1/12°. We also analysed the dominant scales of the SST model input drivers (shortâwave radiation, airâsea heat fluxes, wind stress components, wind stress curl, bathymetry) variability with the purpose of determining the optimal SST model input driver resolution. The SST magnitude of variability is shown to scale with two power law regimes separated by a scaling break at âŒ200 km scale. The analysis of the spatial and temporal scales of dominant SST driver impact helps to interpret this scaling break as a separation between two different dynamical regimes: the (relatively) fast SST dynamics below âŒ200 km governed by eddies, fronts, Ekman upwelling and airâsea heat exchange, whilst above âŒ200 km the SST variability is dominated by longâterm (seasonal and supraâseasonal) modes and the SST geography
Individual and ethnic aspects of preoperative planning for posttraumatic rhinoplasty
The aim of this study was to compare the aesthetic results of post traumatic rhinoplasty among Europeans with populations of healthy Caucasians described in earlier reports, and to collate correct parameters of nasal shape in healthy representatives of both sexes and various races for improvement in aesthetic results of surgery. 3-D scanning of the face was performed in 54 patients after posttraumatic septorhinoplasty. Analysis of 3D model was based on two indices of the nasal proportions and four angles of the region from 18 anthropological points. Parameters of the nasal shape in addition to gender were compared to average values of healthy Caucasian population, described before. Normal characteristics of the nose among individuals of three races from previous studies were also compared to one another. In females, mean height and width of the nose as well as length of both nostrils was smaller. Neither were there any significant differences in width of the nostrils and length of the nasal pyramid nor nasal prominence. Nasal proportions were similar in both sexes. Some of the nasal angles differed in addition to gender. Posttraumatic rhinoplasty resulted in correct shape of the nose similar to the healthy Caucasian population. The aesthetic nose differ among healthy individuals of the three races analysed. While preoperative planning is important, knowledge of the normal values of parameters characterising shape in both genders is equally important as the individual differences in relation to the whole face
Method of analysis of the spatial galaxy distribution at gigaparsec scales. I. Initial principles
Initial principles of a method of analysis of the luminous matter spatial
distribution with sizes about thousands Mpc are presented. The method is based
on an analysis of the photometric redshift distribution N(z) in the deep fields
with large redshift bins \Deltaz=0.1{\div}0.3. Number density fluctuations in
the bins are conditioned by the Poisson's noise, the correlated structures and
the systematic errors of the photo-z determination. The method includes
covering of a sufficiently large region on the sky by a net of the deep
multiband surveys with the sell size about 10^{\circ}x10^{\circ} where
individual deep fields have angular size about 10'x10' and may be observed at
telescopes having diameters 3-10 meters. The distributions of photo-z within
each deep field will give information about the radial extension of the super
large structures while a comparison of the individual radial distributions of
the net of the deep fields will give information on the tangential extension of
the super large structures. A necessary element of the method is an analysis of
possible distortion effects related to the methodic of the photo-z

Diffractive Dijet Production at sqrt(s)=630 and 1800 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron
We report a measurement of the diffractive structure function of
the antiproton obtained from a study of dijet events produced in association
with a leading antiproton in collisions at GeV at the
Fermilab Tevatron. The ratio of at GeV to
obtained from a similar measurement at GeV is compared with
expectations from QCD factorization and with theoretical predictions. We also
report a measurement of the (-Pomeron) and ( of parton in
Pomeron) dependence of at GeV. In the region

found to be of the form , which obeys

Measurement of D-s(+) and D-s(*+) production in B meson decays and from continuum e(+)e(-) annihilation at âs=10.6 GeV

continuum events near the ΄(4S) resonance are presented. Using 20.8 fb-1 of data on the ΄(4S) resonance and 2.6 fb-1 off-resonance, we find the inclusive branching fractions B(BâDs+X)=(10.93±0.19±0.58±2.73)% and B(BâDs*+X)=(7.9±0.8±0.7±2.0)%, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the Ds+âÏÏ+ branching fraction uncertainty. The production cross sections Ï(e+e-âDs+X)ĂB(Ds+âÏÏ+)=7.55±0.20±0.34pb and Ï(e+e-âDs*±X)ĂB(Ds+âÏÏ+)=5.8±0.7±0.5pb are measured at center-of-mass energies about 40 MeV below the ΄(4S) mass. The branching fractions ÎŁB(BâDs(*)+D(*))=(5.07±0.14±0.30±1.27)% and ÎŁB(BâDs*+D(*))=(4.1±0.2±0.4±1.0)% are determined from the Ds(*)+ momentum spectra. A Study of B0 -> J/psi K(*)0 pi+ pi- Decays with the Collider Detector at Fermilab
We report a study of the decays B0 -> J/psi K(*)0 pi+ pi-, which involve the
creation of a u u-bar or d d-bar quark pair in addition to a b-bar -> c-bar(c
s-bar) decay. The data sample consists of 110 1/pb of p p-bar collisions at
sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV collected by the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
collider during 1992-1995. We measure the branching ratios to be BR(B0 -> J/psi
K*0 pi+ pi-) = (8.0 +- 2.2 +- 1.5) * 10^{-4} and BR(B0 -> J/psi K0 pi+ pi-) =
(1.1 +- 0.4 +- 0.2) * 10^{-3}. Contributions to these decays are seen from
psi(2S) K(*)0, J/psi K0 rho0, J/psi K*+ pi-, and J/psi K1(1270)
The Equifinality of Archaeological Networks: an Agent-Based Exploratory Lab Approach
When we find an archaeological network, how can we explore the necessary versus contingent processes at play in the formation of that archaeological network? Given a set of circumstances or processes, what other possible network shapes could have emerged? This is the problem of equifinality, where many different means could potentially arrive at the same end result: the networks that we observe. This paper outlines how agent-based modelling can be used as a laboratory for exploring different processes of archaeological network formation. We begin by describing our best guess about how the (ancient) world worked, given our target materials (here, the networks of production and patronage surrounding the Roman brick industry in the hinterland of Rome). We then develop an agent-based model of the Roman extractive economy which generates different kinds of networks under various assumptions about how that economy works. The rules of the simulation are built upon the work of Bang (2006; 2008) who describes a model of the Roman economy which he calls the âimperial Bazaarâ. The agents are allowed to interact, and the investigators compare the kinds of networks this description generates over an entire landscape of economic possibilities. By rigorously exploring this landscape, and comparing the resultant networks with those observed in the archaeological materials, the investigators will be able to employ the principle of equifinality to work out the representativeness of the archaeological network and thus the underlying processes
A General Definition and Nomenclature for Alternative Splicing Events
Understanding the molecular mechanisms responsible for the regulation of the transcriptome present in eukaryotic cells is one of the most challenging tasks in the postgenomic era. In this regard, alternative splicing (AS) is a key phenomenon contributing to the production of different mature transcripts from the same primary RNA sequence. As a plethora of different transcript forms is available in databases, a first step to uncover the biology that drives AS is to identify the different types of reflected splicing variation. In this work, we present a general definition of the AS event along with a notation system that involves the relative positions of the splice sites. This nomenclature univocally and dynamically assigns a specific âAS codeâ to every possible pattern of splicing variation. On the basis of this definition and the corresponding codes, we have developed a computational tool (AStalavista) that automatically characterizes the complete landscape of AS events in a given transcript annotation of a genome, thus providing a platform to investigate the transcriptome diversity across genes, chromosomes, and species. Our analysis reveals that a substantial partâin human more than a quarterâof the observed splicing variations are ignored in common classification pipelines. We have used AStalavista to investigate and to compare the AS landscape of different reference annotation sets in human and in other metazoan species and found that proportions of AS events change substantially depending on the annotation protocol, species-specific attributes, and coding constraints acting on the transcripts.
