A method for the reduction of aerodynamic drag of road vehicles
A method is proposed for the reduction of the aerodynamic drag of bluff bodies, particularly for application to road transport vehicles. This technique consists of installation of panels on the forward surface of the vehicle facing the airstream. With the help of road tests, it was demonstrated that the attachment of proposed panels can reduce aerodynamic drag of road vehicles and result in significant fuel cost savings and conservation of energy resources
In vivo functional and myeloarchitectonic mapping of human primary auditory areas
In contrast to vision, where retinotopic mapping alone can define areal borders, primary auditory areas such as A1 are best delineated by combining in vivo tonotopic mapping with postmortem cyto- or myeloarchitectonics from the same individual. We combined high-resolution (800 μm) quantitative T(1) mapping with phase-encoded tonotopic methods to map primary auditory areas (A1 and R) within the "auditory core" of human volunteers. We first quantitatively characterize the highly myelinated auditory core in terms of shape, area, cortical depth profile, and position, with our data showing considerable correspondence to postmortem myeloarchitectonic studies, both in cross-participant averages and in individuals. The core region contains two "mirror-image" tonotopic maps oriented along the same axis as observed in macaque and owl monkey. We suggest that these two maps within the core are the human analogs of primate auditory areas A1 and R. The core occupies a much smaller portion of tonotopically organized cortex on the superior temporal plane and gyrus than is generally supposed. The multimodal approach to defining the auditory core will facilitate investigations of structure-function relationships, comparative neuroanatomical studies, and promises new biomarkers for diagnosis and clinical studies
Robust Error Estimation Based on Factor-Graph Models for Non-Line-of-Sight Localization
This paper presents a method to estimate the covariances of the inputs in a factor-graph formulation for localization under non-line-of-sight conditions. A general solution based on covariance estimation and M-estimators in linear regression problems, is presented that is shown to give unbiased estimators of multiple variances and are robust against outliers. An iteratively re-weighted least squares algorithm is proposed to jointly compute the proposed variance estimators and the state estimates for the nonlinear factor graph optimization. The efficacy of the method is illustrated in a simulation study using a robot localization problem under various process and measurement models and measurement outlier scenarios. A case study involving a Global Positioning System based localization in an urban environment and data containing multipath problems demonstrates the application of the proposed technique
Probing Solar Convection
In the solar convection zone acoustic waves are scattered by turbulent sound
speed fluctuations. In this paper the scattering of waves by convective cells
is treated using Rytov's technique. Particular care is taken to include
diffraction effects which are important especially for high-degree modes that
are confined to the surface layers of the Sun. The scattering leads to damping
of the waves and causes a phase shift. Damping manifests itself in the width of
the spectral peak of p-mode eigenfrequencies. The contribution of scattering to
the line widths is estimated and the sensitivity of the results on the assumed
spectrum of the turbulence is studied. Finally the theoretical predictions are
compared with recently measured line widths of high-degree modes.Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, accepted by MNRA
Some comments about Schwarzschield black holes in Matrix theory
In the present paper we calculate the statistical partition function for any
number of extended objects in Matrix theory in the one loop approximation. As
an application, we calculate the statistical properties of K clusters of D0
branes and then the statistical properties of K membranes which are wound on a
torus.Comment: 15 page
Rotational predissociation of extremely weakly bound atom-molecule complexes produced by Feshbach resonance association
We study the rotational predissociation of atom - molecule complexes with
very small binding energy. Such complexes can be produced by Feshbach resonance
association of ultracold molecules with ultracold atoms. Numerical calculations
of the predissociation lifetimes based on the computation of the energy
dependence of the scattering matrix elements become inaccurate when the binding
energy is smaller than the energy width of the predissociating state. We derive
expressions that represent accurately the predissociation lifetimes in terms of
the real and imaginary parts of the scattering length and effective range for
molecules in an excited rotational state. Our results show that the
predissociation lifetimes are the longest when the binding energy is positive,
i.e. when the predissociating state is just above the excited state threshold.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

The EXOSAT medium-energy slew survey catalog
We present a catalog of X-ray sources observed during slew maneuvers by the
Medium Energy Detector Array onboard the EXOSAT Observatory. The EXOSAT Medium
Energy slew-survey catalog (EXMS) provides a unique record of the 1--8 keV
X-ray sky between 1983 and 1986. 98% of the sky was observed, with 85%
receiving an exposure of >60 s. 1210 sources were detected. By comparing these
source positions with other catalogs, identifications are given for 992
detections (82% of the sample). These identifications consist of 250 distinct
objects, including 95 different X-ray binary systems, and 14 different AGN. A
further 58 detections have multiple candidates, while 160 detections remain
unidentified. Collimator transmission corrected 1-8 keV count rates are given
for the identified sources, together with raw count rates for the other
detections. The construction of the EXMS and the checks performed to ensure the
validity of the derived source properties are discussed. A publically available
version of this catalog is maintained on the EXOSAT database and archive system
(telnet://[email protected]).Comment: 52 pages. 22 Figures. To be published in A&AS. For more information,

Non-uniqueness in conformal formulations of the Einstein constraints
Standard methods in non-linear analysis are used to show that there exists a
parabolic branching of solutions of the Lichnerowicz-York equation with an
unscaled source. We also apply these methods to the extended conformal thin
sandwich formulation and show that if the linearised system develops a kernel
solution for sufficiently large initial data then we obtain parabolic solution
curves for the conformal factor, lapse and shift identical to those found
numerically by Pfeiffer and York. The implications of these results for
constrained evolutions are discussed.Comment: Arguments clarified and typos corrected. Matches published versio
