    Stopping in central Pb + Pb collisions at SPS energies and beyond

    We investigate stopping and baryon transport in central relativistic Pb + Pb and Au + Au collisions. At energies reached at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron [sqrt(s_NN) = 6.3-17.3 GeV] and at RHIC (62.4 GeV), we determine the fragmentation-peak positions from the data. The resulting linear growth of the peak positions with beam rapidity is in agreement with our results from a QCD-based approach that accounts for gluon saturation. No discontinuities in the net-proton fragmentation peak positions occur in the expected transition region from partons to hadrons at 6-10 GeV.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table.     Continuously wavelength-tunable high harmonic generation via soliton dynamics

    We report generation of high harmonics in a gas-jet pumped by pulses self-compressed in a He-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber through the soliton effect. The gas-jet is placed directly at the fiber output. As the energy increases the ionization-induced soliton blue-shift is transferred to the high harmonics, leading to a emission bands that are continuously tunable from 17 to 45 eV

    A new advanced fault tolerant control technique for a triple three-phase Surface Permanent Magnet (SPM) machine is investigated in this paper. The machine has a nine-phase winding arranged in three sectors and supplied by three different Voltage Source Inverters (VSIs). The proposed current control technique is firstly exploited to avoid the radial force appearance in case of open winding of one machine sector. Then, the radial force fault tolerant control is improved to compensate for a bearing fault or another source of radial force in this open winding condition. Finite element simulations are used to validate the two proposed control techniques. Finally, advantages and drawbacks of the solution are highlighted

The multi space vector current control technique is exploited to control the torque and the radial force. The radial force control can be useful to compensate for a bearing fault or for a rotor eccentricity. Finite element simulations are used to validate the model and the control technique. Finally, criticalities of the control and modelling aspects are discussed

    NF-κB Activation in Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells by TNF and LPS

    Post-natal human dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) represent a unique precursor population in the dental pulp, which has multipotential and can regenerate a dentin/pulp-like structure. Because the dental pulp is frequently infected by oral bacteria due to dental decay, in this study, we examined whether lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) activated the immunologic transcription factor nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) in DPSCs. We found that both TNF and LPS activated the I-kappa B kinase complex (IKK) in DPSCs to induce the phosphorylation and degradation of IκBα, resulting in the nuclear translocation of NF-κB. Consistently, both TNF and LPS rapidly induced the expression of the NF-κB-dependent gene interleukin-8 (IL-8). However, unlike in monocytes, we found that LPS could not induce the phosphorylation of the NF-κB active subunit p65 in DPSCs. In summary, our studies suggest that DPSCs may be involved in immune responses during pulpal infection through activating NF-κB

    The Influence of a Goalkeeper as an Outfield Player on Defensive Subsystems in Futsal

    The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the goalkeeper as an outfield player on defensive subsystems in the team sport of futsal. For this purpose, all sequences of play involving the goalkeeper (n = 65), and the sequences without a goalkeeper (controls) (n = 11), were selected from digital video footage of a futsal competition, and analysed using TACTO software. The defensive area, attacker-defender distance, and interception distance were used to examine players’ coordination tendencies as a team in completion of successful and unsuccessful passes and shots. Results showed that each team reduced its defensive area as well as its variability in situations where the goalkeeper acted as an outfield player. This finding implies that it was an effective defensive strategy because it led to emergence of more unsuccessful passes. It was also observed that the goalkeeper acting as an outfield player was an effective strategy for attacking in terms of increasing shots at goal
