Mersenne Primes, Polygonal Anomalies and String Theory Classification
It is pointed out that the Mersenne primes and associated
perfect numbers play a significant role in string
theory; this observation may suggest a classification of consistent string
theories.Comment: 10 pages LaTe
Nuclear Track Detectors. Searches for Exotic Particles
We used Nuclear Track Detectors (NTD) CR39 and Makrofol for many purposes: i)
Exposures at the SPS and at lower energy accelerator heavy ion beams for
calibration purposes and for fragmentation studies. ii) Searches for GUT and
Intermediate Mass Magnetic Monopoles (IMM), nuclearites, Q-balls and
strangelets in the cosmic radiation. The MACRO experiment in the Gran Sasso
underground lab, with ~1000 m^2 of CR39 detectors (plus scintillators and
streamer tubes), established an upper limit for superheavy GUT poles at the
level of 1.4x10^-16 cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 for 4x10^-5 <beta<1. The SLIM experiment
at the high altitude Chacaltaya lab (5230 m a.s.l.), using 427 m^2 of CR39
detectors exposed for 4.22 y, gave an upper limit for IMMs of ~1.3x10^-15 cm^-2
s^-1 sr^-1. The experiments yielded interesting upper limits also on the fluxes
of the other mentioned exotic particles. iii) Environmental studies, radiation
monitoring, neutron dosimetry.Comment: Talk given at "New Trends In High-Energy Physics" (experiment,

Current-carrying cosmic string loops 3D simulation: towards a reduction of the vorton excess problem
The dynamical evolution of superconducting cosmic string loops with specific
equations of state describing timelike and spacelike currents is studied
numerically. This analysis extends previous work in two directions: first it
shows results coming from a fully three dimensional simulation (as opposed to
the two dimensional case already studied), and it now includes fermionic as
well as bosonic currents. We confirm that in the case of bosonic currents,
shocks are formed in the magnetic regime and kinks in the electric regime. For
a loop endowed with a fermionic current with zero-mode carriers, we show that
only kinks form along the string worldsheet, therefore making these loops
slightly more stable against charge carrier radiation, the likely outcome of
either shocks or kinks. All these combined effects tend to reduce the number
density of stable loops and contribute to ease the vorton excess problem. As a
bonus, these effects also may provide new ways of producing high energy cosmic
rays.Comment: 11 pages, RevTeX 4 format, 8 figures, submitted to PR
Astroparticle Physics with a Customized Low-Background Broad Energy Germanium Detector
The MAJORANA Collaboration is building the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, a 60 kg
array of high purity germanium detectors housed in an ultra-low background
shield at the Sanford Underground Laboratory in Lead, SD. The MAJORANA
DEMONSTRATOR will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge while
demonstrating the feasibility of a tonne-scale experiment. It may also carry
out a dark matter search in the 1-10 GeV/c^2 mass range. We have found that
customized Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detectors produced by Canberra have
several desirable features for a neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment,
including low electronic noise, excellent pulse shape analysis capabilities,
and simple fabrication. We have deployed a customized BEGe, the MAJORANA
Low-Background BEGe at Kimballton (MALBEK), in a low-background cryostat and
shield at the Kimballton Underground Research Facility in Virginia. This paper
will focus on the detector characteristics and measurements that can be
performed with such a radiation detector in a low-background environment.Comment: Submitted to NIMA Proceedings, SORMA XII. 9 pages, 4 figure
Loop Quantum Gravity and Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays
There are two main sets of data for the observed spectrum of ultra high
energy cosmic rays (those cosmic rays with energies greater than eV), the High Resolution Fly's Eye (HiRes) collaboration group
observations, which seem to be consistent with the predicted theoretical
spectrum (and therefore with the theoretical limit known as the
Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff), and the observations from the Akeno Giant Air
Shower Array (AGASA) collaboration group, which reveal an abundant flux of
incoming particles with energies above eV violating the
Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff. As an explanation of this anomaly it has been
suggested that quantum-gravitational effects may be playing a decisive role in
the propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays. In this article we take the
loop quantum gravity approach. We shall provide some techniques to establish
and analyze new constraints on the loop quantum gravity parameters arising from
both sets of data, HiRes and AGASA . We shall also study their effects on the
predicted spectrum for ultra high energy cosmic rays. As a result we will state
the possibility of reconciling the AGASA observations.Comment: 18 pages, latex, 4 figure
Tesi
Extensive Air Showers from Ultra High Energy Gluinos
We study the proposal that the cosmic ray primaries above the
Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff are gluino-containing hadrons (-hadrons). We describe the interaction of -hadrons with nucleons in
the framework of the Gribov-Regge approach using a modified version of the
hadronic interaction model QGSJET for the generations of Extensive Air Showers
(EAS). There are two mass windows marginally allowed for gluinos: m_{\tilde
g}\lsim 3 GeV and 25\lsim m_{\tilde g}\lsim 35 GeV. Gluino-containing
hadrons corresponding to the second window produce EAS very different from the
observed ones. Light -hadrons corresponding to the first gluino
window produce EAS similar to those initiated by protons, and only future
detectors can marginally distinguish them. We propose a beam-dump accelerator
experiment to search for -hadrons in this mass window. We emphasize
the importance of this experiment: it can discover (or exclude) the light
gluino and its role as a cosmic ray primary at ultra high energies.Comment: 27 pages latex, 13 eps figure
Search for Neutrinoless Double- β Decay in Ge 76 with the Majorana Demonstrator
The Majorana Collaboration is operating an array of high purity Ge detectors to search for neutrinoless double-β decay in Ge76. The Majorana Demonstrator comprises 44.1 kg of Ge detectors (29.7 kg enriched in Ge76) split between two modules contained in a low background shield at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. Here we present results from data taken during construction, commissioning, and the start of full operations. We achieve unprecedented energy resolution of 2.5 keV FWHM at Qββ and a very low background with no observed candidate events in 9.95 kg yr of enriched Ge exposure, resulting in a lower limit on the half-life of 1.9×1025 yr (90% C.L.). This result constrains the effective Majorana neutrino mass to below 240-520 meV, depending on the matrix elements used. In our experimental configuration with the lowest background, the background is 4.0-2.5+3.1 counts/(FWHM t yr)
