    A solenoidal electron spectrometer for a precision measurement of the neutron β\beta-asymmetry with ultracold neutrons

    We describe an electron spectrometer designed for a precision measurement of the neutron β\beta-asymmetry with spin-polarized ultracold neutrons. The spectrometer consists of a 1.0-Tesla solenoidal field with two identical multiwire proportional chamber and plastic scintillator electron detector packages situated within 0.6-Tesla field-expansion regions.     Spin-Orbit-Induced Kondo Size Effect in Thin Films with 5/2-spin Impurities

    Recently, for spin S=5/2S=5/2 impurities quite different size dependence of the Kondo contribution to the resistivity was found experimentally than for S=2. Therefore previous calculation about the effect of the spin-orbit-induced magnetic anisotropy on the Kondo amplitude of the resistivity is extended to the case of S=5/2S=5/2 impurity spin which differs from the integer spin case as the ground state is degenerated. In this case the Kondo contribution remains finite when the sample size goes to zero and the thickness dependence in the Kondo resistivity is much weaker for Cu(Mn). The behavior of the Kondo coefficient as a function of the thickness depends on the Kondo temperature, that is somewhat stronger for larger TKT_K. Comparing our results with a recent experiment in thin Cu(Mn) films, we find a good agreement.Comment: 8 pages, ReVTeX + 4 figures (Postscript

    The contribution of achiral residues in the laspartomycin family of calcium-dependent lipopeptide antibiotics

    The growing threat of antibacterial resistance is a global concern. The so-called calcium-dependent lipopeptide antibiotics (CDAs) have emerged as a promising source of new antibiotic agents that are rich in structural and mechanistic diversity. Over forty unique CDAs have been identified to date and share a number of common features. Recent efforts in our group have provided new mechanistic and structural insights into the laspartomycin family of CDAs. We here describe investigations aimed at probing the role of the three glycine residues found in the laspartomycin peptide macrocycle. In doing so laspartomycin analogues containing the achiral 2-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) as well as L- or D-alanine in place of glycine were prepared and their antibacterial activities evaluated.Microbial Biotechnolog

    The power of signaling: presidential leadership and rhetoric over 20 years

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the power of leadership rhetoric with a theoretical foundation of signaling theory. Past research mostly focus on followers and not other stakeholders and the authors attempt to fill that research gap. Design/methodology/approach: The research explored nearly 20 years and 51,500 pages of information from US presidents and explored the impact on stock market volatility using generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity. Findings: The research findings suggest that leaders can/do have a powerful impact on stakeholders. In particular negative statements will cause the greatest reaction due to risk adverse stockholders, neutral rhetoric will calm the market and decrease volatility and positive rhetoric was not significant. Research limitations/implications: Past research suggests that a focus on the consequences of leadership rhetoric be explored and the research suggests that people do respond to powerful leaders, even if they are not followers. Also the authors filled a gap in regard to the impact of leader communication about economic and marketplace events. Practical implications: Practitioners benefit from the research as they can focus upon the US presidents’ rhetoric and strategically apply the research as they can predict the movement of the stock market immediately thereafter. Originality/value: Very little research has ever explored the impact of a leader’s rhetoric and the subsequent economic impact, and no one has explored in particular the president’s rhetorical impact (who is considered by many the top leader in the USA). © 2017, © Emerald Publishing Limited

    Inhomogeneously doped two-leg ladder systems

    A chemical potential difference between the legs of a two-leg ladder is found to be harmful for Cooper pairing. The instability of superconductivity in such systems is analyzed by compairing results of various analytical and numerical methods. Within a strong coupling approach for the t-J model, supplemented by exact numerical diagonalization, hole binding is found unstable beyond a finite, critical chemical potential difference. The spinon-holon mean field theory for the t-J model shows a clear reduction of the the BCS gaps upon increasing the chemical potential difference leading to a breakdown of superconductivity. Based on a renormalization group approach and Abelian bosonization, the doping dependent phase diagram for the weakly interacting Hubbard model with different chemical potentials was determined.Comment: Revtex4, 11 pages, 7 figure

    A β-hairpin epitope as novel structural requirement for protein arginine rhamnosylation

    For canonical asparagine glycosylation, the primary amino acid sequence that directs glycosylation at specific asparagine residues is well-established. Here we reveal that a recently discovered bacterial enzyme EarP, that transfers rhamnose to a specific arginine residue in its acceptor protein EF-P, specifically recognizes a beta-hairpin loop. Notably, while the in vitro rhamnosyltransferase activity of EarP is abolished when presented with linear substrate peptide sequences derived from EF-P, the enzyme readily glycosylates the same sequence in a cyclized beta-hairpin mimic. Additional studies with other substrate-mimicking cyclic peptides revealed that EarP activity is sensitive to the method used to induce cyclization and in some cases is tolerant to amino acid sequence variation. Using detailed NMR approaches, we established that the active peptide substrates all share some degree of beta-hairpin formation, and therefore conclude that the beta-hairpin epitope is the major determinant of arginine-rhamnosylation by EarP. Our findings add a novel recognition motif to the existing knowledge on substrate specificity of protein glycosylation, and are expected to guide future identifications of rhamnosylation sites in other protein substrates

    The regulation of miRNAs by reconstituted high-density lipoproteins in diabetes-impaired angiogenesis

    Diabetic vascular complications are associated with impaired ischaemia-driven angiogenesis. We recently found that reconstituted high-density lipoproteins (rHDL) rescue diabetes-impaired angiogenesis. microRNAs (miRNAs) regulate angiogenesis and are transported within HDL to sites of injury/repair. The role of miRNAs in the rescue of diabetes-impaired angiogenesis by rHDL is unknown. Using a miRNA array, we found that rHDL inhibits hsa-miR-181c-5p expression in vitro and using a hsa-miR-181c-5p mimic and antimiR identify a novel anti-angiogenic role for miR-181c-5p. miRNA expression was tracked over time post-hindlimb ischaemic induction in diabetic mice. Early post-ischaemia when angiogenesis is important, rHDL suppressed hindlimb mmu-miR-181c-5p. mmu-miR-181c-5p was not detected in the plasma or within HDL, suggesting rHDL specifically targets mmu-miR-181c-5p at the ischaemic site. Three known angiogenic miRNAs (mmu-miR-223-3p, mmu-miR-27b-3p, mmu-miR-92a-3p) were elevated in the HDL fraction of diabetic rHDL-infused mice early post-ischaemia. This was accompanied by a decrease in plasma levels. Only mmu-miR-223-3p levels were elevated in the hindlimb 3 days post-ischaemia, indicating that rHDL regulates mmu-miR-223-3p in a time-dependent and site-specific manner. The early regulation of miRNAs, particularly miR-181c-5p, may underpin the rescue of diabetes-impaired angiogenesis by rHDL and has implications for the treatment of diabetes-related vascular complications
