The etching of polycarbonate charged particle detectors by aqueous sodium hydroxide.

The chemical composition of the reaction products of polycarbonate film and aqueous NaOH has been studied. This system is widely used for the development of charged particle tracks. The principal organic component of the aqueous phase is the anion of Bisphenol A. When large amounts of plastic have been decomposed the anion of phenol may become a major species. A method employing ultra-violet absorbance is suggested for monitoring the concentration of the etch products in the solution. The composition of an etching solution becomes more complicated with increasing age as a result of air oxidation. A remarkable difference between the polycarbonate types Lexan and Makrofol KG has been found since the bulk etching rate of Makrofol KG is independent of etch product concentration. Studies of this type are aimed towards a more fundamental understanding of the bulk and track etching processes
