Low Voltage-Guided Ablation of Posterior Wall Improves 5-Year Arrhythmia-Free Survival in Persistent Atrial Fibrillation
Introduction: The posterior wall (PW) has been proposed as a standard target for ablation beyond pulmonary vein antral isolation (PVI) in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). However, studies have shown inconsistent outcomes with the addition of PW ablation. The presence or absence of low voltage on the PW may explain these inconsistencies. We evaluated whether PW ablation based on the presence or absence of low voltage improves long-term arrhythmia-free outcomes. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 5-year follow-up in 152 consecutive patients who received either standard ablation (SA) with PVI alone or PVI + PW ablation (PWA) based on physician discretion (n = 77) or voltage-guided ablation (VGA) with PVI and addition of PWA only if low voltage was present on the PW (n = 75). Results: The two groups were well matched for baseline characteristics. At 5-year follow-up, 64% of patients receiving VGA were atrial tachyarrhythmia (AT)/AF free compared to 34% receiving SA (HR 0.358 p \u3c .005). PWA had similar AF recurrence in SA and VGA groups (0.30 vs. 0.27 p = .96) but higher AT recurrence when comparing SA and VGA groups (0.39 vs. 0.15 p = .03). In multivariate analysis, both VGA and PWA predicted AF arrhythmia-free survival (HR 0.33, p = .001 and HR 0.20, p = .008, respectively). For AT, VGA predicted arrhythmia-free survival (HR 0.22, p = .028), while PWA predicted AT recurrence (HR 4.704, p = .0219). Conclusion: VGA of the posterior wall ablation beyond PVI in persistent AF significantly improves long-term arrhythmia-free survival when compared with non-voltage-guided ablation. PW ablation without voltage-guidance reduced AF recurrence but at the cost of a higher incidence of AT
Protein-DNA computation by stochastic assembly cascade
The assembly of RecA on single-stranded DNA is measured and interpreted as a
stochastic finite-state machine that is able to discriminate fine differences
between sequences, a basic computational operation. RecA filaments efficiently
scan DNA sequence through a cascade of random nucleation and disassembly events
that is mechanistically similar to the dynamic instability of microtubules.
This iterative cascade is a multistage kinetic proofreading process that
amplifies minute differences, even a single base change. Our measurements
suggest that this stochastic Turing-like machine can compute certain integral

Coupled climate model simulations of Mediterranean winter cyclones and large-scale flow patterns
The study aims to evaluate the ability of global, coupled climate models to reproduce the synoptic regime of the Mediterranean Basin. The output of simulations of the 9 models included in the IPCC CMIP3 effort is compared to the NCEP-NCAR reanalyzed data for the period 1961–1990. The study examined the spatial distribution of cyclone occurrence, the mean Mediterranean upper- and lower-level troughs, the inter-annual variation and trend in the occurrence of the Mediterranean cyclones, and the main large-scale circulation patterns, represented by rotated EOFs of 500 hPa and sea level pressure. The models reproduce successfully the two maxima in cyclone density in the Mediterranean and their locations, the location of the average upper- and lower-level troughs, the relative inter-annual variation in cyclone occurrences and the structure of the four leading large scale EOFs. The main discrepancy is the models' underestimation of the cyclone density in the Mediterranean, especially in its western part. The models' skill in reproducing the cyclone distribution is found correlated with their spatial resolution, especially in the vertical. The current improvement in model spatial resolution suggests that their ability to reproduce the Mediterranean cyclones would be improved as well
Efficient LZ78 factorization of grammar compressed text
We present an efficient algorithm for computing the LZ78 factorization of a
text, where the text is represented as a straight line program (SLP), which is
a context free grammar in the Chomsky normal form that generates a single
string. Given an SLP of size representing a text of length , our
algorithm computes the LZ78 factorization of in time
and space, where is the number of resulting LZ78 factors.
We also show how to improve the algorithm so that the term in the
time and space complexities becomes either , where is the length of the
longest LZ78 factor, or where is a quantity
which depends on the amount of redundancy that the SLP captures with respect to
substrings of of a certain length. Since where
is the alphabet size, the latter is asymptotically at least as fast as
a linear time algorithm which runs on the uncompressed string when is
constant, and can be more efficient when the text is compressible, i.e. when

The spatio-temporal distribution of lightning over Israel and the neighboring area and its relation to regional synoptic systems
The spatio-temporal distribution of lightning flashes over Israel and the neighboring area and its relation to the regional synoptic systems has been studied, based on data obtained from the Israel Lightning Location System (ILLS) operated by the Israel Electric Corporation (IEC). The system detects cloud-to-ground lightning discharges in a range of ~500 km around central Israel (32.5° N, 35° E). The study period was defined for annual activity from August through July, for 5 seasons in the period 2004–2010. <br><br> The spatial distribution of lightning flash density indicates the highest concentration over the Mediterranean Sea, attributed to the contribution of moisture as well as sensible and latent heat fluxes from the sea surface. Other centers of high density appear along the coastal plain, orographic barriers, especially in northern Israel, and downwind from the metropolitan area of Tel Aviv, Israel. The intra-annual distribution shows an absence of lightning during the summer months (JJA) due to the persistent subsidence over the region. The vast majority of lightning activity occurs during 7 months, October to April. Although over 65 % of the rainfall in Israel is obtained during the winter months (DJF), only 35 % of lightning flashes occur in these months. October is the richest month, with 40 % of total annual flashes. This is attributed both to tropical intrusions, i.e., Red Sea Troughs (RST), which are characterized by intense static instability and convection, and to Cyprus Lows (CLs) arriving from the west. <br><br> Based on daily study of the spatial distribution of lightning, three patterns have been defined; "land", "maritime" and "hybrid". CLs cause high flash density over the Mediterranean Sea, whereas some of the RST days are typified by flashes over land. The pattern defined "hybrid" is a combination of the other 2 patterns. On CL days, only the maritime pattern was noted, whereas in RST days all 3 patterns were found, including the maritime pattern. It is suggested that atmospheric processes associated with RST produce the land pattern. Hence, the occurrence of a maritime pattern in days identified as RST reflects an "apparent RST". The hybrid pattern was associated with an RST located east of Israel. This synoptic type produced the typical flash maximum over the land, but the upper-level trough together with the onshore winds it induced over the eastern coast of the Mediterranean resulted in lightning activity over the sea as well, similar to that of CLs. <br><br> It is suggested that the spatial distribution patterns of lightning may better identify the synoptic system responsible, a CL, an "active RST" or an "apparent RST". The electrical activity thus serves as a "fingerprint" for the synoptic situation responsible for its generation
Using social media, machine learning and natural language processing to map multiple recreational beneficiaries
Information and numbers on the use and appreciation of nature are valuable information for protected area (PA) managers. A promising direction is the utilisation of social media, such as the photo-sharing website Flickr. Here we demonstrate a novel approach, borrowing techniques from machine learning (image analysis), natural language processing (Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA)) and self-organising maps (SOM), to collect and interpret >20,000 photos from the Camargue region in Southern France. From the perspective of Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES), we assessed the relationship between the use of the Camargue delta and the presence of natural elements by consulting local managers. Clustering algorithms applied to results of the LSA data revealed six distinct user groups, which included those interested in nature, ornithology, religious pilgrimage, general tourists and aviation enthusiasts. For each group, we produced high-resolution spatial and seasonal maps, which matched known recreational attractions and annual festivals in the Camargue. The accuracy of the group identification, and the spatial and temporal patterns of photo activity, in the Camargue delta were evaluated by local managers of the Camargue regional park. This study demonstrates how PA managers can harness social-media to monitor recreation and improve their management decision making
Compact q-gram Profiling of Compressed Strings
We consider the problem of computing the q-gram profile of a string \str of
size compressed by a context-free grammar with production rules. We
present an algorithm that runs in expected time and uses
O(n+q+\kq) space, where is the exact number of characters
decompressed by the algorithm and \kq\leq N-\alpha is the number of distinct
q-grams in \str. This simultaneously matches the current best known time
bound and improves the best known space bound. Our space bound is
asymptotically optimal in the sense that any algorithm storing the grammar and
the q-gram profile must use \Omega(n+q+\kq) space. To achieve this we
introduce the q-gram graph that space-efficiently captures the structure of a
string with respect to its q-grams, and show how to construct it from a
grammar
Numerical Observation of a Tubular Phase in Anisotropic Membranes
We provide the first numerical evidence for the existence of a tubular phase,
predicted by Radzihovsky and Toner (RT), for anisotropic tethered membranes
without self-avoidance. Incorporating anisotropy into the bending rigidity of a
simple model of a tethered membrane with free boundary conditions, we show that
the model indeed has two phase transitions corresponding to the flat-to-tubular
and tubular-to-crumpled transitions. For the tubular phase we measure the Flory
exponent and the roughness exponent . We find
