    Gamma-ray burst contributions to constraining the evolution of dark energy

    We explore the gamma-ray bursts' (GRBs') contributions in constraining the dark energy equation of state (EOS) at high (1.8<z<71.8 < z < 7) and at middle redshifts (0.5<z<1.80.5 < z < 1.8) and estimate how many GRBs are needed to get substantial constraints at high redshifts. We estimate the constraints with mock GRBs and mock type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) for comparisons. When constraining the dark energy EOS in a certain redshift range, we allow the dark energy EOS parameter to vary only in that redshift bin and fix EOS parameters elsewhere to -1. We find that it is difficult to constrain the dark energy EOS beyond the redshifts of SNe Ia with GRBs unless some new luminosity relations for GRBs with smaller scatters are discovered.     Astrophysical weak-interaction rates for selected A=20A=20 and A=24A=24 nuclei

    We have evaluated the electron capture rates on 20^{20}Ne, 20^{20}F, 24^{24}Mg, 24^{24}Na and the ÎČ\beta decay rates for 20^{20}F and 24^{24}Na at temperature and density conditions relevant for the late-evolution stages of stars with M=8M=8-12 M⊙_\odot. The rates are based on recent experimental data and large-scale shell model calculations. We show that the electron capture rates on 20^{20}Ne, 24^{24}Mg and the 20^{20}F, 24^{24}Na ÎČ\beta-decay rates are based on data in this astrophysical range, except for the capture rate on 20^{20}Ne, which we predict to have a dominating contribution from the second-forbidden transition between the 20^{20}Ne and 20^{20}F ground states in the density range logâĄÏYe(g cm−3)=9.3\log \rho Y_e (\mathrm{g~cm}^{-3}) = 9.3-9.6. The dominance of a few individual transitions allows us to present the various rates by analytical expressions at the relevant astrophysical conditions.     MOA 2003-BLG-37: A Bulge Jerk-Parallax Microlens Degeneracy

    We analyze the Galactic bulge microlensing event MOA-2003-BLG-37. Although the Einstein timescale is relatively short, t_e=43 days, the lightcurve displays deviations consistent with parallax effects due to the Earth's accelerated motion. We show that the chi^2 surface has four distinct local minima that are induced by the ``jerk-parallax'' degeneracy, with pairs of solutions having projected Einstein radii, \tilde r_e = 1.76 AU and 1.28 AU, respectively. This is the second event displaying such a degeneracy and the first toward the Galactic bulge. For both events, the jerk-parallax formalism accurately describes the offsets between the different solutions, giving hope that when extra solutions exist in future events, they can easily be found. However, the morphologies of the chi^2 surfaces for the two events are quite different, implying that much remains to be understood about this degeneracy.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, ApJ, in press, 1 July 200

    The cosmic-ray proton, helium, and muon spectra at small atmospheric depths of 4.5 -- 28 g/cm^2 were precisely measured during the slow descending period of the BESS-2001 balloon flight.     Improving the Prospects for Detecting Extrasolar Planets in Gravitational Microlensing in 2002

    Gravitational microlensing events of high magnification have been shown to be promising targets for detecting extrasolar planets. However, only a few events of high magnification have been found using conventional survey techniques. Here we demonstrate that high magnification events can be readily found in microlensing surveys using a strategy that combines high frequency sampling of target fields with online difference imaging analysis. We present 10 microlensing events with peak magnifications greater than 40 that were detected in real-time towards the Galactic Bulge during 2001 by MOA. We show that Earth mass planets can be detected in future events such as these through intensive follow-up observations around the event peaks.     Evidence for an oscillatory signature in atmospheric neutrino oscillation

    Muon neutrino disappearance probability as a function of neutrino flight length L over neutrino energy E was studied. A dip in the L/E distribution was observed in the data, as predicted from the sinusoidal flavor transition probability of neutrino oscillation. The observed L/E distribution constrained nu_mu nu_tau neutrino oscillation parameters; 1.9x10^-3 < Delta m^2 < 3.0x10^-3 eV^2 and \sin^2(2theta) > 0.90 at 90% confidence level.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR

    Search for nucleon decay via modes favored by supersymmetric grand unification models in Super-Kamiokande-I

    We report the results for nucleon decay searches via modes favored by supersymmetric grand unified models in Super-Kamiokande. Using 1489 days of full Super-Kamiokande-I data, we searched for p→ΜˉK+p \to \bar{\nu} K^+, n→ΜˉK0n \to \bar{\nu} K^0, p→Ό+K0p \to \mu^+ K^0 and p→e+K0p \to e^+ K^0 modes. We found no evidence for nucleon decay in any of these modes. We set lower limits of partial nucleon lifetime 2.3×1033\times10^{33}, 1.3×1032\times10^{32}, 1.3×1033\times10^{33} and 1.0×1033\times10^{33} years at 90% confidence level for p→ΜˉK+p \to \bar{\nu} K^+, n→ΜˉK0n \to \bar{\nu} K^0, p→Ό+K0p \to \mu^+ K^0 and p→e+K0p \to e^+ K^0 modes, respectively. These results give a strong constraint on supersymmetric grand unification models.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure
