A comparative analysis of leaf blades of two kinds of clover (Melilotus albus, Melilotus officinalis) growing on the territory of Kalmykia has been carried out. Identified diagnostic features in the anatomical structure of the leaves of each species. The parameters of leaf tissue are set. The results of the work give an idea of the degree of plasticity of a characteristic of a leaf plate of two types of clover. Demonstrated features of plates of the same species can be equally, as well as specific for this species, and adaptive variability, due to which the plant has adapted to life in arid conditions. The water regime, indicators of transpiration and productivity of the clover were studied. Changes in physiological parameters were determined before the onset of the summer drought and at its height. The established morphological and physiological characteristics of the two species of clover allow them to be defined as plants that are well adapted to growing under the arid conditions of Kalmykia. The combination of the structural features of the clover with its physiological capabilities, valuable feeding properties and a positive effect on the soil, testifies to the effectiveness of the use of clover in the lean, saline areas of the region. The obtained data can be used in further systematic studies of the genus Melilotus, as well as in planning reclamation measures

The purpose of the article is to identify the specifics of the English language Indigenization procedure on the territory of Nigeria, one of the largest countries in West Africa. The research work has the complex system to analyze the cultural and linguistic processes, which are manifested in the study under the influence of cultural factors and its influence on the language functioning. The practical work part is based on the analysis of the language thematic groups "National food" and "National clothes" presenting the specific features of Nigerian English. The results show, Nigerian English has a wide range of words denoting local realities and reflecting the adaptation of the English language to the Nigerian culture peculiarities, which are the process of indigenizatio

Complex of 1-hexadecyl-4-aza-1-azoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane bromide with copper dibromide: structure, aggregation, and biological activity

© 2016, Springer Science+Business Media New York. The aggregation and adsorption properties of a new complex of 1-hexadecyl-4-aza-1-azoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane bromide with copper dibromide were studied by methods of conductometry, tensiometry, and dynamic light scattering. The critical micelle concentration, size of the aggregates, and adsorption characteristics at the water—air interface were determined. The antimicrobial and antifungal effects were established. The studied properties of the complex were compared with the properties of the ligand and cationic surfactants with a head group of the cyclic and acyclic types. The enhanced aggregation ability of the complex and its improved biological activity were shown

Wind Accretion and State Transitions in Cygnus X-1

We present the results of a spectroscopic monitoring program (from 1998 to 2002) of the H-alpha emission strength in HDE 226868, the optical counterpart of the black hole binary, Cyg X-1. The H-alpha profiles consist of (1) a P Cygni component associated with the wind of the supergiant, (2) emission components that attain high velocity at the conjunctions and that probably form in enhanced outflows both towards and away from the black hole, and (3) an emission component that moves in anti-phase with the supergiant's motion. We argue that the third component forms in accreted gas near the black hole, and the radial velocity curve of the emission is consistent with a mass ratio of M_X / M_opt = 0.36 +/- 0.05. We find that there is a general anti-correlation between the H-alpha emission strength and X-ray flux in the sense that when the H-alpha emission is strong (W_\lambda < -0.5 Angstroms) the X-ray flux is weaker and the spectrum harder. On the other hand, there is no correlation between H-alpha emission strength and X-ray flux when H-alpha is weak. During the low/hard X-ray state, the strong wind is fast and the accretion rate is relatively low, while in the high/soft state the weaker, highly ionized wind attains only a moderate velocity and the accretion rate increases. We argue that the X-ray transitions from the normal low/hard to the rare high/soft state are triggered by episodes of decreased mass loss rate in the supergiant donor star.Comment: 45 pages, 16 figures, ApJ, in pres

Modelling the spectral energy distribution of the red giant in RS Ophiuchi: Evidence for irradiation

    Get PDF
We present an analysis of optical and infrared spectra of the recurrent nova RS Oph obtained during between 2006 and 2009. The best fit to the optical spectrum for 2006 September 28 gives Teff = 3900 K for log g = 2.0, while for log g = 0.0 we find Teff = 4700 K, and a comparison with template stellar spectra provides Teff ~ 4500 K. The observed spectral energy distribution (SED), and the intensities of the emission lines, vary on short (≲1 d) time-scales, due to disc variability. We invoke a simple one-component model for the accretion disc, and a model with a hot boundary layer, with high (~3.9 × 10-6M⊙ yr-1) and low (~2 × 10-8M⊙ yr-1) accretion rates, respectively. Fits to the accretion disc-extracted infrared spectrum (2008 July 15) yield effective temperatures for the red giant of Teff = 3800 ± 100 K (log g = 2.0) and Teff = 3700 ± 100 K (log g = 0.0). Furthermore, using a more sophisticated approach, we reproduced the optical and infrared SEDs of the red giant in the RS Oph system with a twocomponent model atmosphere, in which 90 per cent of the surface has Teff = 3600 K and 10 per cent has Teff = 5000 K. Such structure could be due to irradiation of the red giant by the white dwarf. © 2015 The Authors

Controlled reduction of photobleaching in DNA origami gold nanoparticle hybrids

    Get PDF
The amount of information obtainable from a fluorescence-based measurement is limited by photobleaching: Irreversible photochemical reactions either render the molecules nonfluorescent or shift their absorption and/or emission spectra outside the working range. Photobleaching is evidenced as a decrease of fluorescence intensity with time, or in the case of single molecule measurements, as an abrupt, single-step interruption of the fluorescence emission that determines the end of the experiment. Reducing photobleaching is central for improving fluorescence (functional) imaging, single molecule tracking, and fluorescence-based biosensors and assays. In this single molecule study, we use DNA self-assembly to produce hybrid nanostructures containing individual fluorophores and gold nanoparticles at a controlled separation distance of 8.5 nm. By changing the nanoparticles? size we are able to systematically increase the mean number of photons emitted by the fluorophores before photobleaching.Fil: Pellegrotti, Jesica Vanesa.
