    A new sound mode in liquid Helium 4?

    This letter is based on the hypothesis of a small entropy content of the superfluid fraction of liquid helium. We show that such a superfluid entropy gives rise to a new sound mode in a ring-shaped superleak. This mode is named sixth sound. We propose an experiment by which its sound velocity and thereby the superfluid entropy can be measured.     Homogenization of the Equations Governing the Flow Between a Slider and a Rough Spinning Disk

    We have analyzed the behavior of the flow between a slider bearing and a hard-drive magnetic disk under two types of surface roughness. For both cases the length scale of the roughness along the surface is small as compared to the scale of the slider, so that a homogenization of the governing equations was performed. For the case of longitudinal roughness, we derived a one-dimensional lubrication-type equation for the leading behavior of the pressure in the direction parallel to the velocity of the disk. The coefficients of the equation are determined by solving linear elliptic equations on a domain bounded by the gap height in the vertical direction and the period of the roughness in the span-wise direction. For the case of transverse roughness the unsteady lubrication equations were reduced, following a multiple scale homogenization analysis, to a steady equation for the leading behavior of the pressure in the gap. The reduced equation involves certain averages of the gap height, but retains the same form of the usual steady, compressible lubrication equations. Numerical calculations were performed for both cases, and the solution for the case of transverse roughness was shown be in excellent agreement with a corresponding numerical calculation of the original unsteady equations

    We analyze the spin relaxation time 1/T11/T_1 for a system made of weakly coupled one dimensional ladders.This system allows to probe the dimensional crossover between a Luttinger liquid and a Bose-Einstein condensateof magnons. We obtain the temperature dependence of 1/T11/T_1 in the various dimensional regimes, and discuss the experimental consequences.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX 4, 3 EPS figure

    One can use transsonic Bose-Einstein condensates of alkali atoms to establish the laboratory analog of the event horizon and to measure the acoustic version of Hawking radiation. We determine the conditions for supersonic flow and the Hawking temperature for realistic condensates on waveguides where an external potential plays the role of a supersonic nozzle. The transition to supersonic speed occurs at the potential maximum and the Hawking temperature is entirely determined by the curvature of the potential

    The high-lying 6^6Li levels at excitation energy around 21 MeV

    The 3^3H+3^3He cluster structure in 6^6Li was investigated by the 3^3H(α\alpha,3^3H 3^3He)n kinematically complete experiment at the incident energy EαE_\alpha = 67.2 MeV. We have observed two resonances at Ex∗E_x^* = 21.30 and 21.90 MeV which are consistent with the 3^3He(3^3H, Îł\gamma)6^6Li analysis in the Ajzenberg-Selove compilation.
