    There’s just huge anxiety: ontological security, moral panic, and the decline in young people’s mental health and well-being in the UK

    This study aims to critically discuss factors associated with a recent dramatic rise in recorded mental health issues amongst UK youth. It draws from interviews and focus groups undertaken with young people, parents and professionals. We offer valuable new insights into significant issues affecting young people’s mental health and well-being that are grounded in their lived experiences and in those who care for and work with them. By means of a thematic analysis of the data, we identified an increase in anxiety related to: future orientation, social media use, education, austerity, and normalization of mental distress and self-harm. We apply the notion of ontological security in our interpretation of how socio-cultural and political changes have increased anxiety amongst young people and consequent uncertainty about the self, the world and the future, leading to mental health problems. There are also problems conceptualizing and managing adolescent mental health, including increased awareness, increased acceptance of these problems, and stigmatisation. We relate this to the tendency for moral panic and widespread dissemination of problems in a risk society. In our conclusion, we highlight implications for future research, policy and practice

    Beats of the Magnetocapacitance Oscillations in Lateral Semiconductor Superlattices

    We present calculations on the magnetocapacitance of the two-dimensional electron gas in a lateral semiconductor superlattice under two-dimensional weak periodic potential modulation in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Adopting a Gaussian broadening of magnetic-field-dependent width in the density of states, we present explicit and simple expressions for the magnetocapacitance, valid for the relevant weak magnetic fields and modulation strengths. As the modulation strength in both directions increase, beats of the magnetocapacitance oscillations are observed, in the low magnetic field range (Weiss-oscillations regime), which are absent in the one-dimensional weak modulation case.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted by Mod.     International Advisees\u27 Perspectives on the Advising Relationship in Counseling Psychology Doctoral Programs

    Ten international students in U.S.-based counseling psychology doctoral programs were interviewed regarding their experiences as doctoral students, especially their advising relationship. Data were analyzed using consensual qualitative research (CQR). Participants reported more challenges than benefits of being international students, and more often described their doctoral programs as not culturally receptive than receptive to international students. Despite this assessment of the overall doctoral program, they described their own advising relationships as predominantly positive. Many international students discussed with their advisor their difficulties adjusting to a new environment and being away from home, and identified unique personal and professional needs as international students. Participants recommended that international students openly communicate with and seek a good relationship with their advisors, and also recommended that advisors of international students seek to understand and attend to international students\u27 culture and the challenges of being an international student. Implications for training and research are addressed

    Conditional quantum logic using two atomic qubits

    In this paper we propose and analyze a feasible scheme where the detection of a single scattered photon from two trapped atoms or ions performs a conditional unitary operation on two qubits. As examples we consider the preparation of all four Bell states, the reverse operation that is a Bell measurement, and a CNOT gate. We study the effect of atomic motion and multiple scattering, by evaluating Bell inequalities violations, and by calculating the CNOT gate fidelity.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures in 11 file

    Tracer Applications of Noble Gas Radionuclides in the Geosciences

    The noble gas radionuclides, including 81Kr (half-life = 229,000 yr), 85Kr (11 yr), and 39Ar (269 yr), possess nearly ideal chemical and physical properties for studies of earth and environmental processes. Recent advances in Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA), a laser-based atom counting method, have enabled routine measurements of the radiokrypton isotopes, as well as the demonstration of the ability to measure 39Ar in environmental samples. Here we provide an overview of the ATTA technique, and a survey of recent progress made in several laboratories worldwide. We review the application of noble gas radionuclides in the geosciences and discuss how ATTA can help advance these fields, specifically determination of groundwater residence times using 81Kr, 85Kr, and 39Ar; dating old glacial ice using 81Kr; and an 39Ar survey of the main water masses of the oceans, to study circulation pathways and estimate mean residence times. Other scientific questions involving deeper circulation of fluids in the Earth's crust and mantle also are within the scope of future applications. We conclude that the geoscience community would greatly benefit from an ATTA facility dedicated to this field, with instrumentation for routine measurements, as well as for research on further development of ATTA methods

The main subject in these texts is the walk in Berlin without having a specific purpose. The big city Berlin is considered a space of formation that should be ‘read’ to disclose history. The article examines if Zischler’s and Dückers’ walk is merely a part of a nostalgic culture of remembrance or still is a current way to move around in contemporary Berlin physically and intellectually

    In The globalization in Ernst Jünger. From World War to World State, Jan Schlosser follows the German writer's understanding of global phenomena and the development of global narratives in his writings. In the early works of Jünger he reflected on the modern technology that was developed in connection with World War I. In this period he had the controversial view that there are people who master these technologies. After Germany's defeat Jünger was a spokesman for a world state and already questioned the national state, which he considered the source of mass extinction. Schlosser shows that Jünger continued to be a supporter of the vision of a world state, but that in his later days he developed a critical narrative of globalization for different reasons. One reason was the ecological imbalance created by human greed for energy. Another reason was globalization's cultural homogenization with the following loss of cultural diversity.&nbsp
