One-neutron knockout from Ni
The single-particle structure of Ni and level structure of Ni
were investigated with the \mbox{Be (Ni,Ni+)} reaction at 73 MeV/nucleon. An inclusive cross
section of 41.4(12) mb was obtained for the reaction, compared to a theoretical
prediction of 85.4 mb, hence only 48(2)% of the theoretical cross section is
exhausted. This reduction in the observed spectroscopic strength is consistent
with that found for lighter well-bound nuclei. One-neutron removal
spectroscopic factors of 0.58(11) to the ground state and 3.7(2) to all excited
states of Ni were deduced.Comment: Phys. Rev. C, accepte
Geodesics for Efficient Creation and Propagation of Order along Ising Spin Chains
Experiments in coherent nuclear and electron magnetic resonance, and optical
spectroscopy correspond to control of quantum mechanical ensembles, guiding
them from initial to final target states by unitary transformations. The
control inputs (pulse sequences) that accomplish these unitary transformations
should take as little time as possible so as to minimize the effects of
relaxation and decoherence and to optimize the sensitivity of the experiments.
Here we give efficient syntheses of various unitary transformations on Ising
spin chains of arbitrary length. The efficient realization of the unitary
transformations presented here is obtained by computing geodesics on a sphere
under a special metric. We show that contrary to the conventional belief, it is
possible to propagate a spin order along an Ising spin chain with coupling
strength J (in units of Hz), significantly faster than 1/(2J) per step. The
methods presented here are expected to be useful for immediate and future
applications involving control of spin dynamics in coherent spectroscopy and
quantum information processing
Volume Weighted Measures of Eternal Inflation in the Bousso-Polchinski Landscape
We consider the cosmological dynamics associated with volume weighted
measures of eternal inflation, in the Bousso-Polchinski model of the string
theory landscape. We find that this measure predicts that observers are most
likely to find themselves in low energy vacua with one flux considerably larger
than the rest. Furthermore, it allows for a satisfactory anthropic explanation
of the cosmological constant problem by producing a smooth, and approximately
constant, distribution of potentially observable values of Lambda. The low
energy vacua selected by this measure are often short lived. If we require
anthropically acceptable vacua to have a minimum life-time of 10 billion years,
then for reasonable parameters a typical observer should expect their vacuum to
have a life-time of approximately 12 billion years. This prediction is model
dependent, but may point toward a solution to the coincidence problem of

Time Optimal Control in Spin Systems
In this paper, we study the design of pulse sequences for NMR spectroscopy as
a problem of time optimal control of the unitary propagator. Radio frequency
pulses are used in coherent spectroscopy to implement a unitary transfer of
state. Pulse sequences that accomplish a desired transfer should be as short as
possible in order to minimize the effects of relaxation and to optimize the
sensitivity of the experiments. Here, we give an analytical characterization of
such time optimal pulse sequences applicable to coherence transfer experiments
in multiple-spin systems. We have adopted a general mathematical formulation,
and present many of our results in this setting, mindful of the fact that new
structures in optimal pulse design are constantly arising. Moreover, the
general proofs are no more difficult than the specific problems of current
interest. From a general control theory perspective, the problems we want to
study have the following character. Suppose we are given a controllable right
invariant system on a compact Lie group, what is the minimum time required to
steer the system from some initial point to a specified final point? In NMR
spectroscopy and quantum computing, this translates to, what is the minimum
time required to produce a unitary propagator? We also give an analytical
characterization of maximum achievable transfer in a given time for the two

Relationship between body mass index, cardiovascular biomarkers and incident heart failure
BACKGROUND: There are limited data examining whether body-mass index (BMI) influences the association between cardiovascular biomarkers and incident heart failure (HF). METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirteen biomarkers representing key HF domains were measured: N-terminal-pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), mid-regional-pro-A-type natriuretic peptide (MR-proANP), cardiac troponin-T (cTnT), C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, galectin-3, C-terminal pro-endothelin-1 (CT-pro-ET-1), mid-regional pro-adrenomedullin, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, copeptin, renin, aldosterone and cystatin-C. Associations of biomarkers with BMI were examined using linear regression models, and with incident HF using Cox regression models. We selected biomarkers significantly associated with incident HF, and evaluated whether BMI modified these associations. RESULTS: Among 8202 individuals, 41% were overweight (BMI 25-30kg/m2 ), and 16% were obese (BMI≥30kg/m2 ). Mean age of the cohort was 49 years (range 28-75), and 50% were women. All biomarkers except renin were associated with BMI: inverse associations were observed with NT-proBNP, MR-proANP, CT-pro-ET-1 and aldosterone whereas positive associations were observed with the remaining biomarkers (Pall ≤0.001). During 11.3±3.1 years follow-up, 357 HF events were recorded. Only NT-proBNP, MR-proANP and cTnT remained associated with incident HF (P0.1). Combined NT-proBNP and cTnT measurements modestly improved performance metrics of the clinical HF model in overweight (ΔC-statistic=0.024; LHRχ2 =38; P<0.001) and in obese (ΔC-statistic=0.020; LHRχ2 =32; P<0.001) individuals. CONCLUSIONS: Plasma concentrations of several cardiovascular biomarkers are influenced by obesity. Only NT-proBNP, MR-proANP and cTnT were associated with incident HF, and BMI did not modify these associations. Effect of pioglitazone treatment in a patient with secondary multiple sclerosis
BACKGROUND: Ligands of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARγ) induce apoptosis in activated T-lymphocytes and exert anti-inflammatory effects in glial cells. Preclinical studies have shown that the thiazolidinedione pioglitazone, an FDA-approved PPARγ agonist used to treat type 2 diabetes, delays the onset and reduces the severity of clinical symptoms in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, an animal model of multiple sclerosis (MS). We therefore tested the safety and therapeutic potential of oral pioglitazone in a patient with secondary MS. CASE PRESENTATION: The rationale and risks of taking pioglitazone were carefully explained to the patient, consent was obtained, and treatment was initiated at 15 mg per day p.o. and then increased by 15 mg biweekly to 45 mg per day p.o. for the duration of the treatment. Safety was assessed by measurements of metabolic profiles, blood pressure, and edema; effects on clinical symptoms were assessed by measurement of cognition, motor function and strength, and MRI. Within 4 weeks the patient exhibited increased appetite, cognition and attention span. After 12 months treatment, body weight increased from 27.3 to 35.9 kg (32%) and maintained throughout the duration of the study. Upper extremity strength and coordination improved, and increased fine coordination was noted unilaterally after 8 months and bilaterally after 15 months. After 8 months therapy, the patient demonstrated improvement in orientation, short-term memory, and attention span. MRIs carried out after 10 and 18 months of treatment showed no perceptible change in overall brain atrophy, extent of demyelination, or in Gd-enhancement. After 3.0 years on pioglitazone, the patient continues to be clinically stable, with no adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: In a patient with secondary progressive MS, daily treatment with 45 mg p.o. pioglitazone for 3 years induced apparent clinical improvement without adverse events. Pioglitazone should therefore be considered for further testing of therapeutic potential in MS patients
Astrophysical S_{17}(0) factor from a measurement of d(7Be,8B)n reaction at E_{c.m.} = 4.5 MeV
Angular distribution measurements of H(Be,Be)H and
H(Be,B) reactions at ~4.5 MeV were performed to
extract the astrophysical factor using the asymptotic normalization
coefficient (ANC) method. For this purpose a pure, low emittance Be beam
was separated from the primary Li beam by a recoil mass spectrometer
operated in a novel mode. A beam stopper at 0 allowed the use of a
higher Be beam intensity. Measurement of the elastic scattering in the
entrance channel using kinematic coincidence, facilitated the determination of
the optical model parameters needed for the analysis of the transfer data. The
present measurement significantly reduces errors in the extracted
Be(p,) cross section using the ANC method. We get

Identification of new transitions and mass assignments of levels in Pr
The previously reported levels assigned to 151,152,153Pr have recently been
called into question regarding their mass assignment. The above questioned
level assignments are clarified by measuring g-transitions tagged with A and Z
in an in-beam experiment in addition to the measurements from 252Cf spontaneous
fission (SF) and establish new spectroscopic information from to
in the Pr isotopic chain. The isotopic chain 143-153Pr has been studied from
the spontaneous fission of 252Cf by using Gammasphere and also from the
measurement of the prompt g-rays in coincidence with isotopically-identified
fission fragments using VAMOS++ and EXOGAM at GANIL. The latter were produced
using 238U beams on a 9Be target at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The
g-g-g-g data from 252Cf (SF) and those from the GANIL in-beam A- and Z-gated
spectra were combined to unambiguously assign the various transitions and
levels in 151,152,153Pr and other isotopes. New transitions and bands in
145,147,148,149,150Pr were identified by using g-g-g and g-g-g-g coincidences
and A and Z gated g-g spectra. The transitions and levels previously assigned
to 151,153Pr have been confirmed by the (A,Z) gated spectra. The transitions
previously assigned to 152Pr are now assigned to 151Pr on the basis of the
(A,Z) gated spectra. Two new bands with 20 new transitions in 152Pr and one new
band with 7 new transitions in 153Pr are identified from the g-g-g-g
coincidence spectra and the (A,Z) gated spectrum. In addition, new g-rays are
also reported in 143-146Pr. New levels of 145,147-153Pr have been established,
reliable mass assignments of the levels in 151,152,153Pr have been reported and
new transitions have been identified in 143-146Pr showing the new avenues that
are opened by combining the two experimental approaches.Comment: Accepted in Phys. Rev.
The Fundamental Diagram of Pedestrian Movement Revisited
The empirical relation between density and velocity of pedestrian movement is
not completely analyzed, particularly with regard to the `microscopic' causes
which determine the relation at medium and high densities. The simplest system
for the investigation of this dependency is the normal movement of pedestrians
along a line (single-file movement). This article presents experimental results
for this system under laboratory conditions and discusses the following
observations: The data show a linear relation between the velocity and the
inverse of the density, which can be regarded as the required length of one
pedestrian to move. Furthermore we compare the results for the single-file
movement with literature data for the movement in a plane. This comparison
shows an unexpected conformance between the fundamental diagrams, indicating
that lateral interference has negligible influence on the velocity-density
relation at the density domain . In addition we test a
procedure for automatic recording of pedestrian flow characteristics. We
present preliminary results on measurement range and accuracy of this method.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure
Asymptotic normalization coefficient of ^{8}B from breakup reactions and the S_{17} astrophysical factor
We show that asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANC) can be extracted
from one nucleon breakup reactions of loosely bound nuclei at 30-300 MeV/u. In
particular, the breakup of ^{8}B is described in terms of an extended Glauber
model. The 8B ANC extracted for the ground state of this nucleus from breakup
data at several energies and on different targets, C^2 = 0.450+/-0.039} fm^-1,
leads to the astrophysical factor S_{17}(0)= 17.4+/-1.5 eVb for the key
reaction for solar neutrino production 7Be(p,gamma)8B. The procedure described
here is more general, providing an indirect method to determine reaction rates
