    Microstructural characterization and simulation of damage for geared sheet components

    The evolution of damage in geared components manufactured from steel sheets was investigated, to analyse the influence of damage caused by the sheet-bulk-metal forming. Due to the inhomogeneous and multi-axial deformation in the investigated parts, different aspects such as the location-dependent shape and size of voids are analysed by means of various microscopic methods. In particular, a method to characterize the state of damage evolution, i. e. void nucleation, growth and coalescence using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is applied. The investigations reveal a strong dependence of the void area fraction, shape of voids and thus damage evolution on the loading mode. The microstructural analysis is complemented with FEM simulations using material models which consider the characteristics of the void evolution. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd

    Stretch controlled shading capabilities of special elastomeric silicone films

    A hitherto unexploited effect: the reversible stretch-induced change of translucency and transparency of certain silicone materials is experimentally investigated with regard to an application in a new type of shading system for biaxial bent, free-form building envelopes. In a first step the silicone raw materials showing the effect are processed into membrane shape and the stretch-dependent optical characteristics of the silicone film samples are examined. Shading effects are measured during cyclic and long term uniaxial tension tests. For multiaxial loading conditions, as appearing in planar biaxial tension tests with cross shaped specimens and bulge tests with inflated circular specimens, optical inhomogeneity effects due to locally varying elongations are documented. Further results concerning a variable transparency depending on the distance of the observer and an object behind the membrane are discussed. A conceptual application of the materials into translucent facades for shading purposes is presented. The closed cavity concept of planar stretched films located between window screens and the implementation of silicone films as inflatable shading structures are discussed. Furthermore, the advantages of silicone films in these kinds of cladding types are pointed out, as typical problems i.e. fogging and high-temperature stability pose no major issue

    Winter wheat yield prediction using convolutional neural networks from environmental and phenological data

    Crop yield forecasting depends on many interactive factors, including crop genotype, weather, soil, and management practices. This study analyzes the performance of machine learning and deep learning methods for winter wheat yield prediction using an extensive dataset of weather, soil, and crop phenology variables in 271 counties across Germany from 1999 to 2019. We proposed a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, which uses a 1-dimensional convolution operation to capture the time dependencies of environmental variables. We used eight supervised machine learning models as baselines and evaluated their predictive performance using RMSE, MAE, and correlation coefficient metrics to benchmark the yield prediction results. Our findings suggested that nonlinear models such as the proposed CNN, Deep Neural Network (DNN), and XGBoost were more effective in understanding the relationship between the crop yield and input data compared to the linear models. Our proposed CNN model outperformed all other baseline models used for winter wheat yield prediction (7 to 14% lower RMSE, 3 to 15% lower MAE, and 4 to 50% higher correlation coefficient than the best performing baseline across test data). We aggregated soil moisture and meteorological features at the weekly resolution to address the seasonality of the data. We also moved beyond prediction and interpreted the outputs of our proposed CNN model using SHAP and force plots which provided key insights in explaining the yield prediction results (importance of variables by time). We found DUL, wind speed at week ten, and radiation amount at week seven as the most critical features in winter wheat yield prediction

    A novel quantitative arousal-associated EEG-metric to predict severity of respiratory distress in obstructive sleep apnea patients

    Respiratory arousals (RA) on polysomnography (PSG) are an important predictor of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) disease severity. Additionally, recent reports suggest that more global indices of desaturation such as the hypoxic burden, namely the area under the curve (AUC) of the oxygen saturation (SaO2) PSG trace may better depict the desaturation burden in OSA. Here we investigated possible associations between a new metric, namely the AUC of the respiratory arousal electroencephalographic (EEG) recording, and already established parameters as the apnea/hypopnea index (AHI), arousal index and hypoxic burden in patients with OSA. In this data-driven study, polysomnographic data from 102 patients with OSAS were assessed (32 female; 70 male; mean value of age: 52 years; mean value of Body-Mass-Index-BMI: 31 kg/m2). The marked arousals from the pooled EEG signal (C3 and C4) were smoothed and the AUC was estimated. We used a support vector regressor (SVR) analysis to predict AHI, arousal index and hypoxic burden as captured by the PSG. The SVR with the arousal-AUC metric could quite reliably predict the AHI with a high correlation coefficient (0,58 in the training set, 0,65 in the testing set and 0,64 overall), as well as the hypoxic burden (0,62 in the training set, 0,58 in the testing set and 0,59 overall) and the arousal index (0,58 in the training set, 0,67 in the testing set and 0,66 overall). This novel arousal-AUC metric may predict AHI, hypoxic burden and arousal index with a quite high correlation coefficient and therefore could be used as an additional quantitative surrogate marker in the description of obstructive sleep apnea disease severity

    Contesting authentic practice and ethical authority in adventure tourism

    This paper examines the discourses of authenticity and ethics used among adventure tourists regarding the use of the natural environment. In one case, full-time traveling rock climbers use their dedication to the sport and annual visits to the Red River Gorge as evidence for their authoritative voice on ethical climbing practice. While they identify the growing numbers of leisure climbers as a problem for sustainability, many also take up temporary employment as guides and are directly involved in the introduction of new climbers to the area. In another case, two groups of wilderness enthusiasts – “ADK 46ers” and “Summit Stewards” – lament the environmental and social impacts of other recreational users in the Adirondack Park. Despite being visitors themselves, Summit Stewards and 46ers use their sense of place and knowledge of Adirondack history and ecology to substantiate their authority as purveyors of ethical practice. In both cases, senses of responsibility are inspired by senses of place, but are articulated through notions of authenticity and used as justification for ethical authority. While validating their presence in these outdoor spaces, the use of such rhetoric also minimizes their own impacts yielding further tensions among user groups
