    ESTABLISHING PEER-COUNSELING THROUGH PEER INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION IN THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

    Student problems at school are often being a hot topic that never ends in the school environment. 70% of the average student in school ever had problems, including, family problems, social conflict, behavioral deviations, economic problems, difficulties in understanding lessons, health problems, pressure from others and problems of self-competence and self-confidence. The results of interviews with school counselors, showed a significant decrease in academic achievement with an increase in cases that occurred or experienced by students at school. Teachers, school principals and school counselors are always required to immediately resolve problems that occur to students as soon as possible without having risks that an impact on the negative image of the institution / school and damage the performance imagery that has been obtained by the institution with great struggle and hard work. To maintain the achievement, the school will impose sanctions on students who violate school rules or commit uncommon breaking norm in school or outside school with various punishments to them. On the other hand, providing rewards / prizes for those who have great achievement in academics and non-academics to make the institution / name of the school became famous and outstanding. The results of the study the influence of peer interpersonal communication on increasing student academic success is quite high in some high schools in the Pontianak city by 77% of the total 264 respondents. Various efforts to prevent and resolve student problems are carried out by school counselors in handling various cases that occur in the school environment through observation, dialogue and long discussions with counselors in the school. Researchers traced cases that occurred at schools in Pontianak and studied counseling guidance programs implemented at schools in helping educational institutions / schools guide, direct and assist students in overcoming various problems that they faced. Through peer counseling activities and optimizing peer interpersonal communication in the student environment at school. The researcher conducted a survey of several schools in Pontianak, including High School, Vocational High School and Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic high school), by conducting observations and interviews with students and school counselors on the formation of peer-counseling in the school environment through interpersonal peer communication that exists in teaching and learning process activities and non-academic activities in schools.  Article visualizations

    Parents, individualism and education: three paradigms and four countries

    The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) is an important indicator of the increased global importance of education. It defines the goal of education at the level of the child rather than the state, the community or household. The requirement that each child be treated as an individual who can expect to see their 'personality, talents and mental and physical abilities' fully developed, is an example of the individualism which features in three important theoretical paradigms for understanding the rise of education and training. We compare accounts of the global growth of education produced by functionalism, neoinstitutionalism and political economy with the help of qualitative research on children's experience of parental influences. The research is drawn from semi-structured interviews with millennial graduates in Portugal, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It reveals weaknesses in the paradigms which are related to the way each theorises individualism and the role it plays in parental influence on education. The functionalist and neoinstitutionalist conceptions of individualism limit the usefulness of these paradigms for understanding changes in the way families around the world prepare children for education. The political economy paradigm is more promising; however, an approach which identifies only one, neoliberal, version of individualism has limited purchase on international differences in parental influences and the way these influences are changing. An approach which can draw on the contrast between a cognitive individualism associated with neoliberalism, and sentimental individualism which originates in social movements, is more promising.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Huangqi Injection (a Traditional Chinese Patent Medicine) for Chronic Heart Failure: A Systematic Review

    Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a global public health problem. Therefore, novel and effective drugs that show few side-effects are needed. Early literature studies indicated that Huangqi injection is one of the most commonly used traditional Chinese patent medicines for CHF in China. As a large number of clinical studies has been carried out and published, it is essential to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Huangqi injection. Therefore, we carried out this systematic review under the support of the framework of the Joint Sino-Italian Laboratory (JoSIL).To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Huangqi injection for CHF according to the available scientific knowledge.An extensive search including PubMed, EMBASE, CBM, the Cochrane Library and Chinese literature databases was performed up to July 2008. Clinical trials regarding Huangqi injection for the treatment of CHF were searched for, irrespective of languages. The quality of each trial was assessed according to the Cochrane Reviewers' Handbook 5.0, and RevMan 5.0 provided by the Cochrane Collaboration and STATA 9.2 were used for data analysis.After selection of 1,205 articles, 62 RCTs and quasi-RCTs conducted in China and published in Chinese journals were included in the review. The methodological quality of the trials was low. In most trials inclusion and exclusion criteria were not specified. Furthermore, only one study evaluated the outcomes for drug efficacy after an adequate period of time. For these reasons and because of the different baseline characteristics we did not conduct a meta-analysis.Although available studies are not adequate to draw a conclusion on the efficacy and safety of Huangqi injection (a traditional Chinese patent medicine), we hope that our work could provide useful experience on further studies on Huangqi injections. The overall level of TCM clinical research needs to be improved so that the efficacy of TCM can be evaluated by the international community and possibly some TCM can enter into the international market

    Signalling Demand for Foreign Investment: Postsocialist Countries in the Global Bilateral Investment Treaties Network

    A unique dataset on bilateral investment treaties provides a novel source of evidence on the link between neoliberal globalisation and market transition. We argue that postsocialist countries of Europe and Eurasia, more than other developing regions in the world, signed such treaties to signal demand for foreign investment in the spirit of neoliberalism. We calculated the density of the whole BIT network since its inception in 1959 to 2009, and density and centrality of different regional blocks within it, and found strong support for our argument. Yet, even if bilateral investment treaties are designed to promote foreign direct investment, dynamic panel regression models show that signing them does not automatically translate into foreign direct investment inflows for postsocialist European and Eurasian countries in the 1990–2010 period

    Assumption without representation: the unacknowledged abstraction from communities and social goods

    We have not clearly acknowledged the abstraction from unpriceable “social goods” (derived from communities) which, different from private and public goods, simply disappear if it is attempted to market them. Separability from markets and economics has not been argued, much less established. Acknowledging communities would reinforce rather than undermine them, and thus facilitate the production of social goods. But it would also help economics by facilitating our understanding of – and response to – financial crises as well as environmental destruction and many social problems, and by reducing the alienation from economics often felt by students and the public
