    Increase of volume swelling by a temperature gradient

    Verstärkung des Porenschwellens durch einen Temperaturgradienten Der Temperaturgradient in der Hüllwand eines Brennstabs von Schnellen Brutreaktoren führt zu einer Vergrößerung der Hüllaufweitung verglichen mit Materialbestrahlungen. Untersuchungen an einem dafür speziell gestalteten Brennstab führten zu dem Schluß, daß die Ursache hierzu verstärktes Porenschwellen ist. Dieses wird durch Heliumbläschen herbei geführt, welche im Temperaturgradienten wandern und durch Koaleszenz wachsen können. Somit wird der kritische Porenkeimradius schneller erreicht, als ohne Gradienten. Folglich ergibt sich hier eine größere Hüllaufweitung als man aus Materialbestrahlungen erwarten konnte, beim vorliegenden Material (DIN 1.4981 lg) um etwa 50%

    Validation of the radiation pattern of the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY)

    In 2009/2010 the Leibniz-Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) installed a new powerful VHF radar on the island Andøya in Northern Norway (69.30 N, 16.04 E). The Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY) allows studies with high spatial and temporal resolution in the troposphere/lower stratosphere and in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere of the Arctic atmosphere. The monostatic radar is operated at 53.5 MHz with an active phased array antenna consisting of 433 Yagi antennas. Each individual antenna is connected to its own transceiver with independent phase control and a scalable power output of up to 2 kW, which implies high flexibility of beam forming and beam steering. During the design phase of MAARSY several model studies have been carried out in order to estimate the radiation pattern for various combinations of beam forming and steering. However, parameters like mutual coupling, active impedance and ground parameters have an impact on the radiation pattern, but can hardly be measured. Hence, experiments need to be designed to verify the model results. For this purpose, the radar has occasionally been used in passive mode, monitoring the noise power received from both distinct cosmic noise sources like e.g. Cassiopeia A and Cygnus A, and the diffuse cosmic background noise. The analysis of the collected dataset enables us to verify beam forming and steering attempts. These results document the current status of the radar during its development and provide valuable information for further improvement

    Spectroscopic variability of two Oe stars

    The Oe stars HD45314 and HD60848 have recently been found to exhibit very different X-ray properties: whilst HD60848 has an X-ray spectrum and emission level typical of most OB stars, HD45314 features a much harder and brighter X-ray emission, making it a so-called gamma Cas analogue. Monitoring the optical spectra could provide hints towards the origin of these very different behaviours. We analyse a large set of spectroscopic observations of HD45314 and HD60848, extending over 20 years. We further attempt to fit the H-alpha line profiles of both stars with a simple model of emission line formation in a Keplerian disk. Strong variations in the strengths of the H-alpha, H-beta, and He I 5876 emission lines are observed for both stars. In the case of HD60848, we find a time lag between the variations in the equivalent widths of these lines. The emission lines are double peaked with nearly identical strengths of the violet and red peaks. The H-alpha profile of this star can be successfully reproduced by our model of a disk seen under an inclination of 30 degrees. In the case of HD45314, the emission lines are highly asymmetric and display strong line profile variations. We find a major change in behaviour between the 2002 outburst and the one observed in 2013. This concerns both the relationship between the equivalent widths of the various lines and their morphologies at maximum strength (double-peaked in 2002 versus single-peaked in 2013). Our simple disk model fails to reproduce the observed H-alpha line profiles of HD45314. Our results further support the interpretation that Oe stars do have decretion disks similar to those of Be stars. Whilst the emission lines of HD60848 are explained by a disk with a Keplerian velocity field, the disk of HD45314 seems to have a significantly more complex velocity field that could be related to the phenomenon that produces its peculiar X-ray emission.Comment: Accepted for Publication in A&

    Criteria and geological setting for the generic geothermal underground research laboratory, GEOLAB

    High flow rate injection and related hydromechanical interaction are the most important factors in reservoir development of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). GeoLaB, a new generic geothermal underground research laboratory (URL), is proposed for controlled high flow rate experiments (CHFE) to address limited comprehension of coupled processes connected to EGS reservoir flow conditions. As analogue for typical EGS development, CHFE require specific hydromechanical conditions including a connected fracture network in crystalline basement rock, sufficient hydraulic fracture transmissivities, a strike-slip to normal faulting tectonic regime, controllable hydraulic boundary conditions, and hydrothermal alteration fracture fillings that improve conditions for hydromechanical interaction. With the aim to identify most appropriate areas for future site selection, four criteria have been established based on the EGS reference site of Soultz. Two URLs in crystalline basement worldwide approximate the requirements of a new generic GeoLaB and may be used for accompanying experimentation. Besides favourable geological, hydraulic, and stress conditions, the vicinity to long-term EGS production favours the southern Black Forest as potential region for GeoLaB. Therefore, an exemplary site assessment has been carried out at “Wilhelminenstollen” in the southern Black Forest (Germany). New remote sensing, hydrochemical, and geophysical analyses as well as reactivation potential, and stress modelling were added to complement existing geological and hydrogeological information. At this site, reactivation potential analysis reveals two local maxima prone for shear reactivation as strike-slip faults. The highest lineament density is observed for the N110°E strike direction that is associated with both slip and dilation tendency maxima. Clay minerals occur in fractures and the matrix. Local, partly water-bearing fractures, when partly filled with ore minerals, were connected to veins in the tunnel using shallow geophysical methods. Hydrochemical data reveal infiltration of the tunnel water from at least 500 m above the tunnel. The results suggest a crystalline basement with a fracture network that is regionally connected and water-conducting. Hydraulic conductivity in the southern Black Forest granite is estimated to amount to about 4.5·10−8 m s−1 at 500 m depth. The hydraulic boundary conditions exclude unknown drainage. Analyses of the influence of topography on orientation and magnitude of the maximum stress indicate a minimum overburden of about 500 m for regional reactivation to be valid. In conclusion, the southern Black Forest and in particular “Wilhelminenstollen” offers favourable condition for CHFE. Final decision on the GeoLaB site is to be drawn from forthcoming exploration wells
