    Signatures of two-step impurity mediated vortex lattice melting in Bose-Einstein Condensates

    We simulate a rotating 2D BEC to study the melting of a vortex lattice in presence of random impurities. Impurities are introduced either through a protocol in which vortex lattice is produced in an impurity potential or first creating the vortex lattice in the absence of random pinning and then cranking up the (co-rotating) impurity potential. We find that for a fixed strength, pinning of vortices at randomly distributed impurities leads to the new states of vortex lattice. It is unearthed that the vortex lattice follow a two-step melting via loss of positional and orientational order. Also, the comparisons between the states obtained in two protocols show that the vortex lattice states are metastable states when impurities are introduced after the formation of an ordered vortex lattice. We also show the existence of metastable states which depend on the history of how the vortex lattice is created.Comment: Accepted in Euro. Phys. Let

    Spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) is an autosomal dominantly inherited disorder, which is caused by a pathological expansion of a polyglutamine (polyQ) tract in the coding region of the ATXN2 gene. Like other ataxias, SCA2 most overtly affects Purkinje cells (PCs) in the cerebellum. Using a transgenic mouse model expressing a full-length ATXN2(Q127)-complementary DNA under control of the Pcp2 promoter (a PC-specific promoter), we examined the time course of behavioral, morphologic, biochemical and physiological changes with particular attention to PC firing in the cerebellar slice. Although motor performance began to deteriorate at 8 weeks of age, reductions in PC number were not seen until after 12 weeks. Decreases in the PC firing frequency first showed at 6 weeks and paralleled deterioration of motor performance with progression of disease. Transcription changes in several PC-specific genes such as Calb1 and Pcp2 mirrored the time course of changes in PC physiology with calbindin-28 K changes showing the first small, but significant decreases at 4 weeks. These results emphasize that in this model of SCA2, physiological and behavioral phenotypes precede morphological changes by several weeks and provide a rationale for future studies examining the effects of restoration of firing frequency on motor function and prevention of future loss of PCs

    Evaluation of phytochemical and antimicrobial properties of leaf extracts of Ardisia solanacea collected from Pathiramanal Island, Alappuzha District, Kerala State, India

    Ardisia solanacea is a large evergreen shrub growing up to a height of 1.5 to 4 meter tall and native to Bangladesh, China, India, Malaya, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. A. solanacea is a one of the important herb reported to contain an array of phytochemicals and is widely used as food and in traditional medicine. The objective of this study was to analyze the phytochemicals present in the dried leaf samples and to evaluate its antibacterial and antifungal properties. For the evaluation of antibacterial and antifungal properties, agar well diffusion method was used. Phytosterols, phenols and tannins were present in all solvent extracts. Higher antibacterial activity was observed in aqueous hot leaf extract against Staphylococcus epidermidis (13 mm), Escherichia coli (12 mm) and Xanthomonas campestris (12 mm) and methanol cold extract showed the highest activity against Bacillus cereus (8 mm), Klebsiella pneumoniae (9 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (10 mm) and Vibrio parahaemolyticus (8mm). Only methanol hot extract showed antifungal properties against Aspergillus fumigatus, Fusarium oxysporum, Rhizoctonia solani and Trichophyton rubrum

    The collaboration network is an example of a social network which has both non-trivial temporal and spatial dependence.     A fast elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm for multi-objective optimization: NSGA-II

    Multi-objective evolutionary algorithms which use non-dominated sorting and sharing have been mainly criticized for their (i) O(MN3) computational complexity (where M is the number of objectives and N is the population size), (ii) non-elitism approach, and (iii) the need for specifying a sharing parameter. In this paper, we suggest a non-dominated sorting based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (we called it the Non-dominated Sorting GA-II or NSGA-II) which alleviates all the above three difficulties. Specifically, a fast non-dominated sorting approach with O(MN2) computational complexity is presented. Second, a selection operator is presented which creates a mating pool by combining the parent and child populations and selecting the best (with respect to fitness and spread) N solutions. Simulation results on five difficult test problems show that the proposed NSGA-II, in most problems, is able to find much better spread of solutions and better convergence near the true Pareto-optimal front compared to PAES and SPEA-two other elitist multi-objective EAs which pay special attention towards creating a diverse Pareto-optimal front. Because of NSGA-II's low computational requirements, elitist approach, and parameter-less sharing approach, NSGA-II should find increasing applications in the years to come

    During the last few decades several researchers have been devoted to establishing stability of different kinds of functional equations, differential equations, functional differential equations, fractional differential equations, etc. under different sufficient conditions in different spaces like Banach spaces, Banach modules, fuzzy Banach spaces etc. In this paper, we remain confined in the discussion of stability of functional equations in intuitionistic fuzzy Banach spaces. Ulam was the first person who introduced an open question concerning the stability of a group homomorphism in an international conference. Thereafter several researchers have replied and are still replying to this open question in different contexts. The objective of the present paper is to determine the Hyers-Ulam-Rassias type stability concerning the Pexiderized functional equation in intuitionistic fuzzy Banach spaces.     Stress detection and relief using wearable physiological sensors

    The aim of the paper was to present a concept and to develop a prototype in the form of a cap which uses a combination of physiological sensors that work in concert to not only detect high stress levels in a person during his daily routine and working env ironment, but also initiate immediate relief measures. The parameters used to detect stress were compared with resting heart rate and brainwave activity to determine whether the person wearing the cap is in a stressed condition. Stress alleviation was achieved using Auditory Stimulation and a Scalp Massage. Early detection of stress and its immediate remedy or reduction can play an important role in preventing mental health disorders. In order to make the product cost effective, the concept of sensing optimum amount of data to trigger a remedial action was given more importance than extensive data collection using large number of sensors. Integrating an IOT device will further allow information to be recorded and transmitted to a caregiver/doctor to prescribe remedial action and thus prevent the condition to take a pathological form or get complicated. The detailed analysis of the collected data can help people identify the precipitating factors for stress and thus aims at reduction of stress related illnesses
