Measuring Uncertainty in Games: Design and Preliminary Validation
Uncertainty is an important element of game play, which is widely believed to act as a precondition for player experience (PX). To investigate the concept and examine its relation to other PX concepts, we should be able to measure it. We present the design and preliminary results of the validation of the Player Uncertainty in Games (PUG) questionnaire. Based on various sources from games user research and work done with regards to searching digital archives, we designed a questionnaire that measures the experience of uncertainty in games. The scale was refined down to 66 items via interviews with players and expert reviews, which was then validated and further refined based on data gathered from gamers in an online survey. The Principal Component Analysis showed high level of internal consistency for the scale and each of its four factors: Disorientation, Exploration, Prospect, and Randomness. This work demonstrates the initial findings towards a validated tool for measuring uncertainty of players in digital games
Controlled Natural Language Processing as Answer Set Programming: an Experiment
Most controlled natural languages (CNLs) are processed with the help of a
pipeline architecture that relies on different software components. We
investigate in this paper in an experimental way how well answer set
programming (ASP) is suited as a unifying framework for parsing a CNL, deriving
a formal representation for the resulting syntax trees, and for reasoning with
that representation. We start from a list of input tokens in ASP notation and
show how this input can be transformed into a syntax tree using an ASP grammar
and then into reified ASP rules in form of a set of facts. These facts are then
processed by an ASP meta-interpreter that allows us to infer new knowledge
Explaining Violation Traces with Finite State Natural Language Generation Models
An essential element of any verification technique is that of identifying and
communicating to the user, system behaviour which leads to a deviation from the
expected behaviour. Such behaviours are typically made available as long traces
of system actions which would benefit from a natural language explanation of
the trace and especially in the context of business logic level specifications.
In this paper we present a natural language generation model which can be used
to explain such traces. A key idea is that the explanation language is a CNL
that is, formally speaking, regular language susceptible transformations that
can be expressed with finite state machinery. At the same time it admits
various forms of abstraction and simplification which contribute to the
naturalness of explanations that are communicated to the user
Scaling Symmetries of Scatterers of Classical Zero-Point Radiation
Classical radiation equilibrium (the blackbody problem) is investigated by
the use of an analogy. Scaling symmetries are noted for systems of classical
charged particles moving in circular orbits in central potentials V(r)=-k/r^n
when the particles are held in uniform circular motion against radiative
collapse by a circularly polarized incident plane wave. Only in the case of a
Coulomb potential n=1 with fixed charge e is there a unique scale-invariant
spectrum of radiation versus frequency (analogous to zero-point radiation)
obtained from the stable scattering arrangement. These results suggest that
non-electromagnetic potentials are not appropriate for discussions of classical

Justification Patterns for OWL DL Ontologies
For debugging OWL-DL ontologies, natural language explanations of inconsistencies and undesirable entailments are of great help. From such explanations, ontology developers can learn why an ontology gives rise to specific entailments. Unfortunately, commonly used tableaux-based reasoning services do not provide a basis for such explanations, since they rely on a refutation proof strategy and normalising transformations that are difficult for human ontology editors to understand. For this reason, we investigate the use of automatically generated justifications for entailments (i.e., minimal sets of axioms from the ontology that cause entailments to hold). We show that such justifications fall into a manageable number of patterns, which can be used as a basis for generating natural language explanations by associating each justification pattern with a rhetorical pattern in natural language
Extended Timed Up and Go assessment as a clinical indicator of cognitive state in Parkinson\u27s disease
Objective: To evaluate a modified extended Timed Up and Go (extended-TUG) assessment against a panel of validated clinical assessments, as an indicator of Parkinson’s disease (PD) severity and cognitive impairment.
Methods: Eighty-seven participants with idiopathic PD were sequentially recruited from a Movement Disorders Clinic. An extended-TUG assessment was employed which required participants to stand from a seated position, walk in a straight line for 7 metres, turn 180 degrees and then return to the start, in a seated position. The extended-TUG assessment duration was correlated to a panel of clinical assessments, including the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS), Quality of Life (PDQ-39), Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson’s disease (SCOPA-Cog), revised Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Index (ACE-R) and Barratt’s Impulsivity Scale 11 (BIS-11).
Results: Extended-TUG time was significantly correlated to MDS-UPDRS III score and to SCOPA-Cog, ACE-R (p\u3c0.001) and PDQ-39 scores (p\u3c0.01). Generalized linear models determined the extended-TUG to be a sole variable in predicting ACE-R or SCOPA-Cog scores. Patients in the fastest extended-TUG tertile were predicted to perform 8.3 and 13.4 points better in the SCOPA-Cog and ACE-R assessments, respectively, than the slowest group. Patients who exceeded the dementia cut-off scores with these instruments exhibited significantly longer extended-TUG times.
Conclusions: Extended-TUG performance appears to be a useful indicator of cognition as well as motor function and quality of life in PD, and warrants further evaluation as a first line assessment tool to monitor disease severity and response to treatment. Poor extended-TUG performance may identify patients without overt cognitive impairment form whom cognitive assessment is needed
