SAX J1808.4-3658, an accreting millisecond pulsar shining in gamma rays?
We report the detection of a possible gamma-ray counterpart of the accreting
millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. The analysis of ~6 years of data from the
Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi-LAT)
within a region of 15deg radius around the position of the pulsar reveals a
point gamma-ray source detected at a significance of ~6 sigma (Test Statistic
TS = 32), with position compatible with that of SAX J1808.4-3658 within 95%
Confidence Level. The energy flux in the energy range between 0.6 GeV and 10
GeV amounts to (2.1 +- 0.5) x 10-12 erg cm-2 s-1 and the spectrum is
well-represented by a power-law function with photon index 2.1 +- 0.1. We
searched for significant variation of the flux at the spin frequency of the
pulsar and for orbital modulation, taking into account the trials due to the
uncertainties in the position, the orbital motion of the pulsar and the
intrinsic evolution of the pulsar spin. No significant deviation from a
constant flux at any time scale was found, preventing a firm identification via
time variability. Nonetheless, the association of the LAT source as the
gamma-ray counterpart of SAX J1808.4-3658 would match the emission expected
from the millisecond pulsar, if it switches on as a rotation-powered source

Conservation of context-dependent splicing activity in distant Muscleblind homologs
The Muscleblind (MBL) protein family is a deeply conserved family of RNA binding proteins that regulate alternative splicing, alternative polyadenylation, RNA stability and RNA localization. Their inactivation due to sequestration by expanded CUG repeats causes symptoms in the neuromuscular disease myotonic dystrophy. MBL zinc fingers are the most highly conserved portion of these proteins, and directly interact with RNA. We identified putative MBL homologs in Ciona intestinalis and Trichoplax adhaerens, and investigated their ability, as well as that of MBL homologs from human/mouse, fly and worm, to regulate alternative splicing. We found that all homologs can regulate alternative splicing in mouse cells, with some regulating over 100 events. The cis-elements through which each homolog exerts its splicing activities are likely to be highly similar to mammalian Muscleblind-like proteins (MBNLs), as suggested by motif analyses and the ability of expanded CUG repeats to inactivate homolog-mediated splicing. While regulation of specific target exons by MBL/MBNL has not been broadly conserved across these species, genes enriched for MBL/MBNL binding sites in their introns may play roles in cell adhesion, ion transport and axon guidance, among other biological pathways, suggesting a specific, conserved role for these proteins across a broad range of metazoan species.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (DP5 OD017865
Transgenic rice variety 'IR72' with Xa21 is resistant to bacterial blight
An elite indica rice variety, 'IR72', was transformed with a cloned gene, Xa21, through particle bombardment. Molecular analysis of transgenic plants revealed the presence of a 3.8-kb EcoRV-digested DNA fragment corresponding to most of the Xa21 coding region and its complete intron sequence, indicating the integration of Xa21 into the genome of 'IR72'. In the T1 generation, the transgene was inherited and segregated in a 3:1 ratio. After inoculation with the prevalent races 4 and 6 of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), T1 plants positive for the transgene were found to be resistant to bacterial blight (BB). We also observed that the level of resistance to race 4 of Xoo was higher due to the pyramiding of Xa21 and Xa4 present in 'IR72'. Since the inactivation of the transgene Xa21 occurred in the two transgenic T1 plants, a larger progeny should be obtained for selecting homozygous line with a consistently higher level of resistance to the BB pathogen
Gamma-ray signatures of cosmic ray acceleration, propagation, and confinement in the era of CTA
Galactic cosmic rays are commonly believed to be accelerated at supernova
remnants via diffusive shock acceleration. Despite the popularity of this idea,
a conclusive proof for its validity is still missing. Gamma-ray astronomy
provides us with a powerful tool to tackle this problem, because gamma rays are
produced during cosmic ray interactions with the ambient gas. The detection of
gamma rays from several supernova remnants is encouraging, but still does not
constitute a proof of the scenario, the main problem being the difficulty in
disentangling the hadronic and leptonic contributions to the emission. Once
released by their sources, cosmic rays diffuse in the interstellar medium, and
finally escape from the Galaxy. The diffuse gamma-ray emission from the
Galactic disk, as well as the gamma-ray emission detected from a few galaxies
is largely due to the interactions of cosmic rays in the interstellar medium.
On much larger scales, cosmic rays are also expected to permeate the
intracluster medium, since they can be confined and accumulated within clusters
of galaxies for cosmological times. Thus, the detection of gamma rays from
clusters of galaxies, or even upper limits on their emission, will allow us to
constrain the cosmic ray output of the sources they contain, such as normal
galaxies, AGNs, and cosmological shocks. In this paper, we describe the impact
that the Cherenkov Telescope Array, a future ground-based facility for
very-high energy gamma-ray astronomy, is expected to have in this field of

Investigation of Dense Gas Towards Relativistic Outflow Sources
We probe the interstellar medium towards the objects Circinus X-1, a low-mass X-ray binary with relativistic jets; and the highly energetic Westerlund 2 stellar cluster, which is located towards TeV gamma-ray emission and interesting arc- and jet-like features seen in Nanten 12CO data. We have mapped both regions with the Mopra radio telescope, in 7 mm and 12 mm wavebands, looking for evidence of disrupted/dense gas caused by the interaction between high energy outflows and the ISM. Towards Westerlund 2, peaks in CS(J=1-0) emission indicate high density gas towards the middle of the arc and the endpoint of the jet; and radio recombination line emission is seen overlapping the coincident HII region RCW49. Towards Circinus X-1, 12CO(J = 1-0) Nanten data reveals three molecular clouds that lie in the region of Cir X-1. Gas parameters for each cloud are presented here
May measurement month 2018: an analysis of blood pressure screening in the Philippines.
Building on the gains of May Measurement Month 2017 (MMM17), the Philippine Society of Hypertension once again took part in MMM18 to raise awareness of high blood pressure (BP) in the country and to harness opportunistic BP screening in detecting unaware hypertensive individuals and referring them for treatment. We followed the standard MMM18 protocol designed by the International Society of Hypertension, utilizing convenience sampling with volunteer investigators, taking three sitting BP measurements of volunteer adults (≥18 years). Basic data on demographic, lifestyle, and environmental factors were also taken. We analysed 177 176 screened individuals from the Philippines. Of these, 29.1% (51 527) had also participated in MMM17, whereas 68.8% (121 893) were new screenees; and 14.2% (25 232) had their BP taken for the first time ever. After multiple imputation, 39.0% (69 126) were hypertensive. Of these, 50.3% (34 795) were aware they were hypertensive. 49.9% (34 491) were on antihypertensive medication, 58.0% (20 010) of whom had controlled BP <140/90 mmHg. Only 28.9% of all participants with hypertension had controlled BP. Systolic BPs and diastolic BPs were significantly higher in the overweight and obese, in those receiving antihypertensive medications, in patients with diabetes, and significantly lower in pregnant women. MMM18 has again shown that opportunistic BP screening, harnessing volunteers, is a pragmatic public health measure to improve awareness and treatment rates of raised BP
May Measurement Month 2017: an analysis of blood pressure screening in the Philippines-South-East Asia and Australasia
Cardiovascular diseases remain the Philippines' leading cause of mortality, with hypertension as a prevalent contributory risk factor. We took part in May Measurement Month 2017 (MMM17), a global initiative to raise awareness of high blood pressure (BP) and to serve as a temporary solution to the lack of screening programs worldwide. Following the standard MMM protocol, data for 271 604 screened individuals were submitted from the Philippines. After multiple imputation, 91 994 (34.3%) were hypertensive; 28 662 out of 205 158 participants (14.0%) not receiving treatment had hypertension; and of the 60 370 receiving treatment, 25 144 (41.6%) had uncontrolled BP. Blood pressures were significantly higher in the overweight and obese, current smokers, in participants receiving antihypertensive medication, those with previous myocardial infarction or stroke. The BP measurements were relatively lower when taken on the left arm, and in pregnant women. A slightly higher systolic BP was noted in participants who reported no alcohol intake. Blood pressures recorded during the weekends were highest, and the lowest readings were obtained on Tuesdays. MMM17 was the largest BP screening campaign conducted in the Philippines. Opportunistic BP screening, harnessing volunteers, are a cost-effective public health measure to improve awareness and treatment rates of raised BP. These may help provide additional information that can guide medical practitioners and health officials in drafting preventive and therapeutic measures to improve control rates and long-term outcomes of hypertensive individuals in the population
MAGIC upper limits on the very high energy emission from GRBs
The fast repositioning system of the MAGIC Telescope has allowed during its
first data cycle, between 2005 and the beginning of year 2006, observing nine
different GRBs as possible sources of very high energy gammas. These
observations were triggered by alerts from Swift, HETE-II, and Integral; they
started as fast as possible after the alerts and lasted for several minutes,
with an energy threshold varying between 80 and 200 GeV, depending upon the
zenith angle of the burst. No evidence for gamma signals was found, and upper
limits for the flux were derived for all events, using the standard analysis
chain of MAGIC. For the bursts with measured redshift, the upper limits are
compatible with a power law extrapolation, when the intrinsic fluxes are
evaluated taking into account the attenuation due to the scattering in the
