    Performance of differenced range data types in Voyager navigation

    Voyager radio navigation made use of a differenced rage data type for both Saturn encounters because of the low declination singularity of Doppler data. Nearly simultaneous two-way range from two-station baselines was explicitly differenced to produce this data type. Concurrently, a differential VLBI data type (DDOR), utilizing doubly differenced quasar-spacecraft delays, with potentially higher precision was demonstrated. Performance of these data types is investigated on the Jupiter-to-Saturn leg of Voyager 2. The statistics of performance are presented in terms of actual data noise comparisons and sample orbit estimates. Use of DDOR as a primary data type for navigation to Uranus is discussed

    A beta-ray spectrometer for coincidence measurements

    An intermediate image beta-ray spectrometer has been constructed utilizing the focusing properties of a U-shaped magnetic field distribution. The construction and performance of the instrument are discussed. A transmission of ten percent has been attained with a resolution of about six percent. A scintillation spectrometer is used in conjunction with the intermediate image spectrometer for the purpose of making coincidence measurements

    I-Xe structure of ILAFEGH 009 and shallowater: Evidence for early formation and rapid cooling of impact-derived enstatite meteorites

    Enstatite meteorites have proven to be ideal samples for past studies of the I-Xe system. This work focuses on two enstatite meteorites that were formed by impact processes. Ilafegh 009 is a clast-free impact melt rock from the EL chondrite parent body. The Shallowater aubrite likely formed when a fully molten planetesimal collided with a solid planetesimal, mixing fragments of the solid planetesimal into the enstatite mantle of the molten planetesimal. A complex three-stage cooling history resulted from this mixing and later break-up and reassembly of the parent body. The present study indicates that the I-Xe structure of these two meteorites resulted from in situ decay of live I-129 and that both experienced xenon closure of the iodine host phase at approximately the same time. I-Xe cooling rates are consistent with the cooling rates derived from mineralogic and petrologic studies of these objects. The similarities in ages suggest that the region of the nebula in which enstatite parent bodies formed must have experienced an intense early bombardment

    Correlating Soil Test Phosphorus Losses in Runoff

    Phosphorus in agricultural runoff is often a major cause of accelerated eutrophication of lakes and streams. Previous research has indicated that the amount of dissolved P (DP) in runoff is directly related to P content of the surface soil. Decades of fertilizer application at rates exceeding those of crop uptake have elevated soil test P (STP) levels in areas of intensive crop and livestock production, making this the major source of DP loss in runoff. The objective of our experiment was to relate STP content of Captina silt loam to P concentration and loss in runoff, and determine which STP method correlates best to P levels in runoff. The 57 grass plots used in this study had a wide range of STP levels. A representative soil sample was composited from the 0-2 cm depth of each plot, and STP content was determined by Mehlich III, distilled water, and iron oxide paper strip extraction methods. Simulated rain was applied at 100 mm h-1. Runoff samples were filtered and analyzed for DP content. Regression methods showed STP (regardless of extraction method) was directly related to runoff DP, but extractions with distilled water or iron oxide paper strips gave results that correlated most closely with runoff DP concentrations. Because plot runoff totals were highly variable, total DP load did not correlate well with STP

    Presolar He and Ne Isotopes in Single Circumstellar SiC Grains

    Noble gas isotopes in presolar silicon carbide (SiC) dust grains from primitive meteorites provide, together with major element isotopic compositions, insight into the nucleosynthetic output of different types of evolved stars >4.5 Gyr ago. We report here new results from helium and neon isotopic analyses of single presolar SiC grains with sizes between 0.6 and 6.3 μm using an ultrahigh sensitivity mass spectrometer. These noble gas studies were complemented by an ion microprobe study (NanoSIMS) of Si, C, and N isotopic compositions of the same grains. About 40%, or 46 of the 110 grains analyzed, contain nucleosynthetic 22Ne and/or 4He from their parent stars above our mass spectrometer's detection limit. We discuss the possible stellar sources using isotopic ratios as constraints combined with new model predictions for low- to intermediate-mass (1.5, 2, 3, and 5 M☉) asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars of different metallicities (1, 1/2, 1/3, and 1/6 Z☉). Most SiC grains are of the mainstream type and originated in low-mass AGB stars. We find a higher-than-expected percentage of A/B type grains, with some containing 22Ne and/or 4He. In addition, we find one noble gas-rich nova grain candidate, one supernova grain (X-type grain), and one 22Ne-rich X- or Z-type grain candidate

    Biomagnifcation and body distribution of ivermectin in dung beetles

Financial support was provided by the project CGL2015-68207-R of the Secretaría de Estado de Investigación–Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad.A terrestrial test system to investigate the biomagnifcation potential and tissue-specifc distribution of ivermectin, a widely used parasiticide, in the non-target dung beetle Thorectes lusitanicus (Jekel) was developed and validated. Biomagnifcation kinetics of ivermectin in T. lusitanicus was investigated by following uptake, elimination, and distribution of the compound in dung beetles feeding on contaminated faeces. Results showed that ivermectin was biomagnifed in adults of T. lusitanicus when exposed to non-lethal doses via food uptake. Ivermectin was quickly transferred from the gut to the haemolymph, generating a biomagnifcation factor (BMFk) three times higher in the haemolymph than in the gut after an uptake period of 12 days. The fat body appeared to exert a major role on the biomagnifcation of ivermectin in the insect body, showing a BMFk 1.6 times higher than in the haemolymph. The results of this study highlight that the biomagnifcation of ivermectin should be investigated from a global dung-based food web perspective and that the use of these antiparasitic substances should be monitored and controlled on a precautionary basis. Thus, we suggest that an additional efort be made in the development of standardised regulatory recommendations to guide biomagnifcation studies in terrestrial organisms, but also that it is necessary to adapt existing methods to assess the efects of such veterinary medical products

    A New Saurolophine Dinosaur from the Latest Cretaceous of Far Eastern Russia

    Background: Four main dinosaur sites have been investigated in latest Cretaceous deposits from the Amur/Heilongjiang Region: Jiayin and Wulaga in China (Yuliangze Formation), Blagoveschensk and Kundur in Russia (Udurchukan Formation). More than 90% of the bones discovered in these localities belong to hollow-crested lambeosaurine saurolophids, but flat-headed saurolophines are also represented: Kerberosaurus manakini at Blagoveschensk and Wulagasaurus dongi at Wulaga. Methodology/Principal Findings: Herein we describe a new saurolophine dinosaur, Kundurosaurus nagornyi gen. et sp. nov. from the Udurchukan Formation (Maastrichtian) of Kundur, represented by disarticulated cranial and postcranial material. This new taxon is diagnosed by four autapomorphies. Conclusions/Significance: A phylogenetic analysis of saurolophines indicates that Kundurosaurus nagornyi is nested within a rather robust clade including Edmontosaurus spp. Saurolophus spp. and Prosaurolophus maximus, possibly as a sister-taxon for Kerberosaurus manakini also from the Udurchukan Formation of Far Eastern Russia. The high diversity and mosaic distribution of Maastrichtian hadrosaurid faunas in the Amur-Heilongjiang region are the result of a complex palaeogeographical history and imply that many independent hadrosaurid lineages dispersed without any problem between western America and eastern Asia at the end of the Cretaceous. © 2012 Godefroit et al.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    The growth of InGaAsP by CBE for SCH quantum well lasers operating at 1.55 and 1.4 [mu]m

    InGaAsP has been grown by CBE at compositions of 1.1, 1.2 and 1.4 [mu]m for the development of MQW-SCH lasers. The observed incorporation coefficients for TMI and TEG show strong temperature sensitivity while the phosphorus and arsenic incorporation behavior is constant over the substrate temperature range explored, 530 to 580[deg]C setpoint. For higher substrate temperatures the growth rate increases with the largest growth rates occurring for the 1.4 [mu]m quaternary. Low temperature photoluminescence indicates the possibility of compositional grading or clustering for the 1.1 [mu]m material and also for the 1.2 [mu]m material grown at the lowest substrate temperature. The final laser structure was grown with the InP cladding regions grown at 580[deg]C with the inner cladding and active regions grown at 555[deg]C. Using this approach we have successfully grown MQW-SCH lasers with the composition of the active InxGa1-xAs ranging from x=0.33 to x=0.73.
