A spatiotemporal bayesian hierarchical approach to investigating patterns of confidence in the police at the neighbourhood level
Public confidence in the police is crucial to effective policing. Improving understanding of public confidence at the local l evel will better enable the police to conduct proactive confidence interventions to meet the concerns of local communities. Conventional approaches do not consider that public confidence varies across geographic space as well as in time. Neighbourhood leve l approaches to modelling public confidence in the police are hampered by the small number problem and the resulting instability in the estimates and uncertainty in the results. This research illustrates a spatiotemporal Bayesian approach for estimating an d forecasting public confidence at the neighbourhood level and we use it to examine trends in public confidence in the police in London, UK, for Q2 2006 to Q3 2013. Our approach overcomes the limitations of the small number problem and specifically , we inv estigate the effect of the spatiotemporal representation structure chosen on the estimates of public confidence produced. We then investigate the use of the model for forecasting by producing one - step ahead forecasts of the final third of the time - series . The results are compared with the forecasts from traditional time - series forecasting methods like naïve, exponential smoothing, ARIMA, STARIMA and others. A model with spatially structured and unstructured random effects as well as a normally distributed s patiotemporal interaction term was the most parsimonious and produced the most realistic estimates. It also provided the best forecasts at the London - wide, Borough and neighbourhood level
VE-cadherin and claudin-5: it takes two to tango
Endothelial barrier function requires the adhesive activity of VE-cadherin
and claudin-5, which are key components of adherens and tight endothelial
junctions, respectively. Emerging evidence suggests that VE-cadherin controls
claudin-5 expression by preventing the nuclear accumulation of FoxO1 and
-catenin, which repress the claudin-5 promoter. This indicates that a crosstalk
mechanism operates between these junctional structures
Building an end user focused THz based ultra high bandwidth wireless access network: The TERAPOD approach
The TERAPOD project aims to investigate and demonstrate the feasibility of ultra high bandwidth wireless access networks operating in the Terahertz (THz) band. The proposed TERAPOD THz communication system will be developed, driven by end user usage scenario requirements and will be demonstrated within a first adopter operational setting of a Data Centre. Q fever epidemic in Hungary, April to July 2013
We investigated a Q fever outbreak with human
patients showing high fever, respiratory tract symptoms, headache and retrosternal pain in southern
Hungary in the spring and summer of 2013. Seventy
human cases were confirmed by analysing their serum
and blood samples with micro-immunofluorescence
test and real-time PCR. The source of infection was a
merino sheep flock of 450 ewes, in which 44.6% (25/56)
seropositivity was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Coxiella burnetii DNA was detected
by real-time PCR in the milk of four of 20 individuals
and in two thirds (41/65) of the manure samples. The
multispacer sequence typing examination of C. burnetii DNA revealed sequence type 18 in one human
sample and two manure samples from the sheep flock.
The multilocus variable-number tandem repeat analysis pattern of the sheep and human strains were also
almost identical, 4/5-9-3-3-0-5 (Ms23-Ms24-Ms27-
Ms28-Ms33-Ms34). It is hypothesised that dried
manure and maternal fluid contaminated with C. burnetii was dispersed by the wind from the sheep farm
towards the local inhabitants. The manure was eliminated in June and the farm was disinfected in July. The
outbreak ended at the end of July 2013

Optical pump rectification emission: route to terahertz free-standing surface potential diagnostics
We introduce a method for diagnosing the electric surface potential of a semiconductor based on THz surface generation. In our scheme, that we name Optical Pump Rectification Emission, a THz field is generated directly on the surface via surface optical rectification of an ultrashort pulse after which the DC surface potential is screened with a second optical pump pulse. As the THz generation directly relates to the surface potential arising from the surface states, we can then observe the temporal dynamics of the static surface field induced by the screening effect of the photo-carriers. Such an approach is potentially insensitive to bulk carrier dynamics and does not require special illumination geometries
Clusters of galaxies : observational properties of the diffuse radio emission
Clusters of galaxies, as the largest virialized systems in the Universe, are
ideal laboratories to study the formation and evolution of cosmic
structures...(abridged)... Most of the detailed knowledge of galaxy clusters
has been obtained in recent years from the study of ICM through X-ray
Astronomy. At the same time, radio observations have proved that the ICM is
mixed with non-thermal components, i.e. highly relativistic particles and
large-scale magnetic fields, detected through their synchrotron emission. The
knowledge of the properties of these non-thermal ICM components has increased
significantly, owing to sensitive radio images and to the development of
theoretical models. Diffuse synchrotron radio emission in the central and
peripheral cluster regions has been found in many clusters. Moreover
large-scale magnetic fields appear to be present in all galaxy clusters, as
derived from Rotation Measure (RM) studies. Non-thermal components are linked
to the cluster X-ray properties, and to the cluster evolutionary stage, and are
crucial for a comprehensive physical description of the intracluster medium.
They play an important role in the cluster formation and evolution. We review
here the observational properties of diffuse non-thermal sources detected in
galaxy clusters: halos, relics and mini-halos. We discuss their classification
and properties. We report published results up to date and obtain and discuss
statistical properties. We present the properties of large-scale magnetic
fields in clusters and in even larger structures: filaments connecting galaxy
clusters. We summarize the current models of the origin of these cluster
components, and outline the improvements that are expected in this area from
future developments thanks to the new generation of radio telescopes.Comment: Accepted for the publication in The Astronomy and Astrophysics

An Aqueous Extract of Fagonia cretica Induces DNA Damage, Cell Cycle Arrest and Apoptosis in Breast Cancer Cells via FOXO3a and p53 Expression
Background - Plants have proved to be an important source of anti-cancer drugs. Here we have investigated the cytotoxic action of an aqueous extract of Fagonia cretica, used widely as a herbal tea-based treatment for breast cancer. Methodology/Principal Findings - Using flow cytometric analysis of cells labeled with cyclin A, annexin V and propidium iodide, we describe a time and dose-dependent arrest of the cell cycle in G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle and apoptosis following extract treatment in MCF-7 (WT-p53) and MDA-MB-231 (mutant-p53) human breast cancer cell lines with a markedly reduced effect on primary human mammary epithelial cells. Analysis of p53 protein expression and of its downstream transcription targets, p21 and BAX, revealed a p53 associated growth arrest within 5 hours of extract treatment and apoptosis within 24 hours. DNA double strand breaks measured as ?-H2AX were detected early in both MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells. However, loss of cell viability was only partly due to a p53-driven response; as MDA-MB-231 and p53-knockdown MCF-7 cells both underwent cell cycle arrest and death following extract treatment. p53-independent growth arrest and cytotoxicity following DNA damage has been previously ascribed to FOXO3a expression. Here, in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells, FOXO3a expression was increased significantly within 3 hours of extract treatment and FOXO3 siRNA reduced the extract-induced loss of cell viability in both cell lines. Conclusions/Significance - Our results demonstrate for the first time that an aqueous extract of Fagonia cretica can induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis via p53-dependent and independent mechanisms, with activation of the DNA damage response. We also show that FOXO3a is required for activity in the absence of p53. Our findings indicate that Fagonia cretica aqueous extract contains potential anti-cancer agents acting either singly or in combination against breast cancer cell proliferation via DNA damage-induced FOXO3a and p53 expression
