    Solar panel acceptance testing using a pulsed solar simulator

    Utilizing specific parameters as area of an individual cell, number in series and parallel, and established coefficient of current and voltage temperature dependence, a solar array irradiated with one solar constant at AMO and at ambient temperature can be characterized by a current-voltage curve for different intensities, temperatures, and even different configurations. Calibration techniques include: uniformity in area, depth and time, absolute and transfer irradiance standards, dynamic and functional check out procedures. Typical data are given for individual cell (2x2 cm) to complete flat solar array (5x5 feet) with 2660 cells and on cylindrical test items with up to 10,000 cells. The time and energy saving of such testing techniques are emphasized

    Promises and Lies: Restoring Violated Trust

    Trust is critical for organizations, effective management, and efficient negotiations, yet trust violations are common. Prior work has often assumed trust to be fragile—easily broken and difficult to repair. We investigate this proposition in a laboratory study and find that trust harmed by untrustworthy behavior can be effectively restored when individuals observe a consistent series of trustworthy actions. Trust harmed by the same untrustworthy actions and deception, however, never fully recovers—even when deceived participants receive a promise, an apology, and observe a consistent series of trustworthy actions. We also find that a promise to change behaviour can significantly speed the trust recovery process, but prior deception harms the effectiveness of a promise in accelerating trust recovery

    Old-growth and mature forests near spotted owl nests in western Oregon

    We investigated how the amount of old-growth and mature forest influences the selection of nest sites by northern spotted owls (Strix occidentalis caurina) in the Central Cascade Mountains of Oregon. We used 7 different plot sizes to compare the proportion of mature and old-growth forest between 30 nest sites and 30 random sites. The proportion of old-growth and mature forest was significantly greater at nests sites than at random sites for all plot sizes (P less than or equal to 0.01). Thus, management of the spotted owl might require setting the percentage of old-growth and mature forest retained from harvesting at least 1 standard deviation above the mean for the 30 nest sites we examined

    NICMOS Imaging of a Damped Lyman-alpha Absorber at z=1.89 toward LBQS 1210+1731 : Constraints on Size and Star Formation Rate

    We report results of a high-resolution imaging search (in rest frame H-α\alpha and optical continuum) for the galaxy associated with the damped Lyman-α\alpha (DLA) absorber at z=1.892z=1.892 toward the zem=2.543z_{em}=2.543 quasar LBQS 1210+1731, using HST/NICMOS. After PSF subtraction, a feature is seen in both the broad-band and narrow-band images, at a projected separation of 0.25\arcsec from the quasar. If associated with the DLA, the object would be 23\approx 2-3 h701h_{70}^{-1} kpc in size with a flux of 9.8±2.49.8 \pm 2.4 μ\muJy in the F160W filter, implying a luminosity at λcentral=5500\lambda_{central}=5500 {\AA} in the rest frame of 1.5×10101.5 \times 10^{10} h702h_{70}^{-2} L_{\odot} at z=1.89z=1.89, for q0=0.5q_{0}=0.5. However, no significant H-α\alpha emission is seen, suggesting a low star formation rate (SFR) (3 σ\sigma upper limit of 4.0 h702h_{70}^{-2} M_{\odot} yr1^{-1}), or very high dust obscuration. Alternatively, the object may be associated with the host galaxy of the quasar. H-band images obtained with the NICMOS camera 2 coronagraph show a much fainter structure 45\approx 4-5 h701h_{70}^{-1} kpc in size and containing four knots of continuum emission, located 0.7\arcsec away from the quasar. We have probed regions far closer to the quasar sight-line than in most previous studies of high-redshift intervening DLAs. The two objects we report mark the closest detected high-redshift DLA candidates yet to any quasar sight line. If the features in our images are associated with the DLA, they suggest faint, compact, somewhat clumpy objects rather than large, well-formed proto-galactic disks or spheroids.Comment: 52 pages of text, 19 figures, To be published in Astrophysical Journal (accepted Dec. 8, 1999

    LP 349-25: a new tight M8V binary

    We present the discovery of a tight M8V binary, with a separation of only 1.2 astronomical units, obtained with the PUEO and NACO adaptive optics systems, respectively at the CFHT and VLT telescopes. The estimated period of LP 349-25 is approximately 5 years, and this makes it an excellent candidate for a precise mass measurement.Comment: Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics Letter

    Thalamic Activation During Slightly Subphysiological Glycemia in Humans

    OBJECTIVEThe central nervous system mechanisms of defenses against falling plasma glucose concentrations, and how they go awry and result in iatrogenic hypoglycemia in diabetes, are not known. Hypoglycemic plasma glucose concentrations of 55 mg/dL (3.0 mmol/L) cause symptoms, activate glucose counterregulatory systems, and increase synaptic activity in a network of brain regions including the dorsal midline thalamus in humans. We tested the hypothesis that slightly subphysiological plasma glucose concentrations of 65 mg/dL (3.6 mmol/L), which do not cause symptoms but do activate glucose counterregulatory systems, also activate brain synaptic activities.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODSWe measured relative regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), an index of synaptic activity, in predefined brain regions with [15O]water positron emission tomography, symptoms, and plasma epinephrine and glucagon concentrations during a 2-h euglycemic (90 mg/dL) to hypoglycemic (55 mg/dL) clamp (n = 20) or a 2-h euglycemic to slight subphysiological (65 mg/dL) clamp (n = 9) in healthy humans.RESULTSClamped plasma glucose concentrations of 65 mg/dL did not cause hypoglycemic symptoms, but raised plasma epinephrine and glucagon concentrations and increased rCBF (P = 0.007) only in the dorsal midline thalamus.CONCLUSIONSSlightly subphysiological plasma glucose concentrations increase synaptic activity in the dorsal midline thalamus in humans
