We show that within the six-vertex model there is a parametrized Yang-Baxter equation with nonabelian parameter group GL(2)xGL(1) at the center of the disordered regime. Cross-shoreface Suspended Sediment Transport : A Response to the Interaction of Nearshore and Shelf Processes, Fall 1994 Duck, NC Field Experiment

Deployment : The tripods were assembled, tested and secured onboard the RIV Sea Diver, which left the Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk, Virginia early on 26 September. While underway to the deployment site, the continuous surface water conductivity and temperature survey was run and several CTD casts were made. The tripods were deployed on 26 September and secured to the sea floor with sand anchors by VIMS divers. The R/V Sea Diver then began the series of on/off shore transects at the tripod deployment site for approximately 12 hours. The vessel returned to port on 27 September . Recovery: The tripod recovery cruise began late on 21 October and repeated the underway data collection scheme of the September cruise. On October 22 divers removed the sand anchors and the tripods were recovered without incident. The on/off shore transects were repeated and transit to port occurred on 23 October

Faculty perceptions of the impact of student laptop use in a wireless Internet environment on the classroom learning environment and teaching

This study examines faculty perceptions of the impact of wireless laptops in the higher education classroom. A survey comprising Likert-scale and open-ended questions was administered to faculty members at a large public university. Survey questions focused on faculty perceptions of the impact of wireless laptops on the classroom atmosphere and their teaching. Depending on the context of use, respondents pointed to numerous ways in which laptops have enabled them to incorporate new information sources, engage students, and add activities to enhance classroom learning. A majority of respondents, however, indicated that students are likely to become distracted when using wireless laptops and that student participation in discussions can be negatively impacted. A majority also indicated that they would make use of an option to turn off Internet access in their classrooms

The Marine World: Its Misrepresentation in Popular Depictions

The underwater world is one of the least understood realms on our planet. It exists in our minds as a sort of alternative reality that has been shaped by underwater imaginaries such as Jacques Cousteau, Netflix, and Disney. These pop culture depictions of the ocean play off ideas such as a “stranger in this ecosystem” narrative and deceptions of the senses to present a more captivating version of the underwater world. Ones that’s purpose is not to inform, rather to entertain. Drawing on my own experience as a diver and marine biologist, I will explore these deceptions to provide a more complete window into life below the waves. I hope to dispel these misconceptions and encourage people to think critically about popular depictions of the marine world

Metaplectic Ice

Spherical Whittaker functions on the metaplectic n-fold cover of GL(r+1) over a nonarchimedean local field containing n distinct n-th roots of unity may be expressed as the partition functions of statistical mechanical systems that are variants of the six-vertex model. If n=1 then in view of the Casselman-Shalika formula this fact is related to Tokuyama's deformation of the Weyl character formula. It is shown that various properties of these Whittaker functions may be expressed in terms of the commutativity of row transfer matrices for the system. Potentially these properties (which are already proved by other methods, but very nontrivial) are amenable to proof by the Yang-Baxter equation

Benchmarking urine storage and collection conditions for evaluating the female urinary microbiome.

Standardized conditions for collection, preservation and storage of urine for microbiome research have not been established. We aimed to identify the effects of the use of preservative AssayAssure® (AA), and the effects of storage time and temperatures on reproducibility of urine microbiome results. We sequenced the V3-4 segment of the 16S rRNA gene to characterize the bacterial community in the urine of a cohort of women. Each woman provided a single voided urine sample, which was divided into aliquots and stored with and without AA, at three different temperatures (room temperature [RT], 4 °C, or -20 °C), and for various time periods up to 4 days. There were significant microbiome differences in urine specimens stored with and without AA at all temperatures, but the most significant differences were observed in alpha diversity (estimated number of taxa) at RT. Specimens preserved at 4 °C and -20 °C for up to 4 days with or without AA had no significant alpha diversity differences. However, significant alpha diversity differences were observed in samples stored without AA at RT. Generally, there was greater microbiome preservation with AA than without AA at all time points and temperatures, although not all results were statistically significant. Addition of AA preservative, shorter storage times, and colder temperatures are most favorable for urinary microbiome reproducibility

Site selection criteria in community shopping centers : implications for real estate developers

Historically, real estate developers contemplating the development of a community center will acquire a site based on hunches, experience, and a limited amount of data. Real estate academics, on the other hand, have produced numerous mathematical models and methods for retail site selection. However, to the real estate developer the retail community shopping center has remained elusive. Not only will developers oftentimes face the prospect of site selection without a complete picture of who their tenants will be, but they will be left to their own experience to understand in depth the needs and preferences of typical community center tenants. This paper will explore current methods and site selection criteria used by leading community center tenants for site selection and will investigate how that information can be implemented by the developer to improve the ir approach to retail site selection.by Benjamin T. Claimed Co-ethnics and Kin-State Citizenship in Southeastern Europe

The paper introduces the often neglected concept of 'claimed co-ethnics' in the analysis of citizenship policies. It argues that this is an interstitial category that further complicates the triadic nexus between national minorities, nationalising states and kin-states. The 'claimed co-ethnics' are defined as people who are recognised by the citizenship (or ethnizenship) conferring state as belonging to its main ethnic group, although they themselves do not embrace that definition. In addition to bringing the issue of claimed co-ethnics into focus, the paper elucidates how citizenship policies can affect groups that challenge the exact fit between ethnicity and nation, showing how national governments through particular citizenship policies and categorisation practices engage in the construction of these groups. The paper shows that the triadic nexus framework, which has had a strong influence on citizenship and minorities scholarship, needs to be revised to include unidirectional relations between the elements of the triadic nexus. Physical Response of the York River Estuary to Hurricane Isabel

After making landfall on the North Carolina coast on the morning of 18 September 2003, Category 2 Hurricane Isabel tracked northward parallel to and slightly west of the Chesapeake Bay. At Gloucester Point, near the mouth of the York River estuary, strong onshore winds with speeds in excess of 20 m⋅s-1 persisted for over 12 hours and peak winds reached over 40 m⋅s-1, causing a sustained up-estuary wind stress. Storm surge exceeded 2 m throughout most of the lower Chesapeake Bay. A 600 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), deployed at a depth of 8.5 m off Gloucester Point, provided high-quality data on waves, storm surge, currents, and acoustic backscatter throughout the water column before, during, and after the storm. Pressure and salinity sensors at three additional sites further up the estuary provided information on water surface slope and saltwater excursion up the estuary. A first-order estimate of three terms of the along-channel momentum equation (barotropic pressure gradient, acceleration, and friction) showed that the pressure gradient appeared to be balanced by the wind stress and the acceleration during the storm.
