    Acclimatization and Field Evaluation of Micropropagated Plants of Chrysanthemum Cv.'Arka Swarna'

    Chrysanthemum cv.'Arka Swarna' was micropropagated using shoot-tip and nodal microcuttings on MS medium containing 3% sucrose and 0.25% Phytagel® in the absence of externally supplied plant growth regulators, yielding 90-100% rooted plantlets, or in medium containing 1 μM benzyladenine or kinetin yielding 20-32% plantlets within 2-4 weeks of subculture. The stocks were acclimatized employing sachet technique wherein the rooted plantlets (2.5-4 cm) were planted in polythene bags of 5"×9" filled to one-third height with planting mixture. The closed bags with 1-5 plants were incubated under conditions similar to the in vitro stocks. The plantlets recorded 90-100% establishment within 4 weeks. The ex vitro established plants were evaluated in the field a month later by direct planting , or after one month in a field nursery-bed, along with conventional suckers. While field establishment (80-95%) was not significantly influenced by the treatments, micropropagated plants put through the nursery appeared to be the best among the three treatments in vegetative growth, floral characteristics and flower yield, demonstrating advantage of micropropagation over conventional propagation for shy-suckering chrysanthemums

Recently there is a demand for stress relieving holidays as people preferred to go for particular holiday destinations where their health was also looked after and where they could rejuvenate themselves. Kerala identified this need and projected itself as a healthcare destination .The Present study concentrates mainly on Kerala‟s holistic healthcare system-Ayurveda. Ayurveda plays a major role in Kerala‟s round the year tourism.  The study is based on the fact that the growth in the health tourism definitely provides sustainable benefits to the Kerala tourism market. Destination image is generally considered as an important attribute in successful destination marketing. This paper aims to identify various destination features which contribute to build a positive destination image about Kerala as a healthcare destination and to understand the relationship between tourist perception and satisfaction. The study explores the destination image enhancement opportunities that exist between the tourist preferences and satisfaction in the desired healthcare service delivery.&nbsp

    Impact of oligohydramnios on maternal and perinatal outcome: a comparative study

    Background: Oligohydramnios has got significant impact on perinatal outcome and maternal morbidity. Therefore, early detection and its management will help in reduction of perinatal morbidity and mortality, decreased operative interventions. Hence, the present study is undertaken to study the impact of oligohydromnios on perinatal-maternal outcome.Methods: The present study was prospective comparative observational study conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Mallareddy Narayana Multispecialty Hospital, reputed teaching hospital from January 2015 to August 2017. The women were divided into study and control groups based on AFI, 100 cases were selected in each group.Results: Out of the 200 women, included in the present study, in study group AFI <5 cm was present in 51% of patients and AFI 5-8 cm in 49% of patients. Doppler abnormalities found in study group (n = 33). 32% of the patients in study group had non-reactive NST while in control group 8%. Caesarean section was performed in 70% of cases in study group as compared to 9% in control group. Foetal distress was the most common indication for LSCS. There were no perinatal deaths in this study.Conclusions: In this study amniotic fluid index of ≤5 cm was commonly associated with increased cesarean section rates, intrauterine growth restriction, Non-reactive NST and abnormal umbilical artery Doppler velocimetry studies. Hence, every case of oligohydramnios needs to be evaluated carefully, early detection and initiation of appropriate treatment and treat the cause if possible

    BIOPROSPECTING OF MARINE SPONGE (CALLYSPONGIA DIFFUSA) FOR ANTIBACTERIAL COMPOUND.

    Objective: Marine sponges are a rich source of new antimicrobial drugs. The present study was aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the marine sponge (Callyspongia diffusa) against human pathogenic bacteria and to analyze the presence of bioactive compounds in the sponge.Methods: Antibacterial activity of the marine sponge C. diffuser was examined using petroleum ether, chloroform, n-butanol, methanol, ethanol, and water as solvents and tested against human pathogenic bacteria such as Esherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus by agar well diffusion method. Zoochemical analysis was performed to screen for the presence of secondary metabolites. Bioactive compounds were purified by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis.Results: The results obtained show that the sponge extracts had significant antibacterial activity against the tested strains. The methanol extract was found to be the most effective and exhibited the highest potency against all pathogens tested. Zoochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, terpenoids, and sterols. In TLC, spots corresponding to a Rf value of 0.67 were found to possess antibacterial activity against the test bacteria. GC-MS chromatogram showed seven major peaks at retention time of 12.69, 13.81, 24.21, 24.65, 28.01, 28.93, 30.87 minutes. The mass of the compounds and fragments were matched with the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) database for identification of probable compounds present in the sample. GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of bioactive compounds in the sponge.Conclusion: This study confirms the marine natural species provides an excellent source of bioactive metabolites that can exploit to develop novel and potential therapeutic agents

    Abnormal uterine bleeding in perimenopausal age group women: a study on clinicopathological evaluation and management

    Background: Abnormal uterine bleeding is the most common and frequent presenting complaint in Gynaecology Outpatient Department in all age groups, especially in perimenopausal women. Objective of present study was clinicopathological evaluation and management of abnormal uterine bleeding in perimenopausal age group women.Methods: The present study was prospective analytical study conducted at Mallareddy Narayana Multi-speciality Hospital, reputed teaching hospital, in Obstetrics and gynaecology department in association with department of pathology from January 2015 to December 2016. Perimenopausal women in age group 45-55 years included in this study. Other age groups with abnormal uterine bleeding, isolated cervical or vaginal pathology, bleeding diathesis, and pregnancy related causes of bleeding excluded from this study. Endometrial tissue collected by sampling procedure such as dilatation and curettage. Proper counselling about management was given to all women related to medical and surgical interventional approaches.Results: A total of 135 women with abnormal uterine bleeding in perimenopausal age were examined after fulfilling criteria during study period of 2 years. The age of participants in mean±SD was 46.68±2.03 years (min 45 years and max 55 years). Maximum number of patients with abnormal uterine bleeding presented in age group of 45-50 years. The most common symptoms were heavy menstrual bleeding (83.7%), followed by frequent menstrual bleeding (26.6%). Proliferative endometrium was the most common histopathological (30.3%) study followed by secretory endometrium (27.4%). Surgical management was given to 94 patients.Conclusions: Heavy menstrual bleeding and frequent menstrual bleeding were mostly correlated with abnormal endometrial histopathological findings in this study. Gynaecologists should pay attention towards these abnormal bleeding patterns along with the evaluation of endometrial tissue for histopathological findings, which will help us to plan for successful management.

    GC-MS analysis of bioactive compounds in methanolic extract of tubers of Pueraria tuberosa (Roxb. ex Willd.) DC. - Fabaceae

    The present experiment was designed to determine the bioactive constituents from tuber extracts of Pueraria tuberosa (Roxb. ex Willd.) DC. of the family Fabaceae. The medicinal value of a plant species is dependent upon its various phytochemical constituents. The chemical compositions of the methanolic extract of tubers of P. tuberosa were investigated using Gas chromatography-Mass spectrometry and about nineteen bioactive phytochemical compounds were identified. The prevailing compounds were 2, 3-Dimethylaziridine; 2-Cyclopenten-1-one, 2-hydroxy-; 2-Hydroxy-gamma-butyrolactone; 3-Methyl-1,2-cyclopentanedione; 2,5- Dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3 (2H) – furanone; Butane 2-methyl; Oxetane; Maltol; 1, 5-Anhydro-6-deoxyhexo-2,3-diulose; 2, 3-Dihydro-2, 5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-One; 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural, Phenol,2,6-dimethoxy; Dodecanoic Acid; Guanosine; Tetradecanoic acid; Myo-inositol; Hexadecanoic Acid; 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid, methyl ester and Cis-vaccenic acid.     Socio-cultural and Economic Impacts of Religious Festivals on Sustainable Local Community Livelihoods in Kerala: The Case of Palakkad

    Festivals depict the heritage, culture, and traditions of a particular region. They create a state of exhilaration and enthusiasm. Kerala is a state in southwest India with its own distinct culture and traditions. The state is also known for its religious pluralism. This study attempts to understand the perceived impact of religious festivals on the local community livelihoods in Palakkad, a district in central Kerala. Twelve temples in which religious festivals are held annually, with attendance in the range of thousands, were selected. The selected temples are famous for hosting specific religious festivals which attract a large number of visitors, from within and beyond the region. Using a sample of 420 community members living around these temples, this study examined how the socio-cultural and economic impacts of these religious festivals are perceived by the community. The findings show that there is a statistically significant relationship between the perceived socio-cultural and economic impacts of festivals on local communities. The celebration of local values and distinctiveness were evident in these religious festivals. The local community considers these festivals as part of their community identity and as offering impetus for annual family and community reunions

    Tetramer Orbital-Ordering induced Lattice-Chirality in Ferrimagnetic, Polar MnTi2O4

    Using density-functional theory calculations and experimental investigations on structural, magnetic and dielectric properties, we have elucidated a unique tetragonal ground state for MnTi2O4, a Ti^{3+} (3d^1)-ion containing spinel-oxide. With lowering of temperature around 164 K, cubic MnTi2O4 undergoes a structural transition into a polar P4_1 tetragonal structure and at further lower temperatures, around 45 K, the system undergoes a paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition. Magnetic superexchange interactions involving Mn and Ti spins and minimization of strain energy associated with co-operative Jahn-Teller distortions plays a critical role in stabilization of the unique tetramer-orbital ordered ground state which further gives rise to lattice chirality through subtle Ti-Ti bond-length modulations

    Impact of dietary and lifestyle choices on menstrual patterns in medical students

    Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate average age of menarche, the pattern and types of menstrual disorders and their relation with BMI, dietary habits, physical exercise and stress.Methods: A cross sectional prospective study was conducted on female medical students during the academic year 2018-2019 at Mallareddy medical college for women, Suraram, Hyderabad, India. The various life style factors including BMI, junk food consumption and physical exercise were factored. Prevalence of each different menstrual abnormality were identified and analyzed by Chi-squire test and p value <0.005 was considered as statistically significant.Results: Study included 255 medical students who had attained menarche without known medical problems. Mean age of menarche was 12.81years. The most frequent menstrual disorders were premenstrual syndrome 192 (75 %), dysmenorrhoea 146 (57 %), and irregular cycle 97(38%). Statistically significant association of Body mass index (BMI) related to premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and dysmenorrhoea was reported (both p<0.05). Similarly, statistically significant association of lack of physical activity had greater risk of premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhoea (both p<0.0001). Unhealthy dietary patterns had statistically significant higher risk for dysmenorrhoea (p<0.0001).Conclusions: In conclusion premenstrual symptoms, dysmenorrhoea and menstrual irregularities were more prevalent. Majority of symptoms were stress, pain abdomen, irritability, mood swings. Comprehensive education programs on lifestyle modifications like regular physical activities, promoting healthy eating habits should be emphasised to prevent menstrual abnormalities of young students as early as at school level
