    Studenters erfaringer med Flipped Classroom i en helsefagutdanning

    Background: The flipped classroom approach has gained increased attention in educational research literature. The purpose of this study was to investigate how students experience a flipped classroom approach in health education, compared to ordinary lectures.Method: Bachelor students (n=25) who watched the video-based material in the flipped classrooms pre-session, answered a questionnaire to evaluate their flipped classroom experience. The questionnaire consisted of both closed and open questions.Results: Ninety six per cent (24/25) of respondents found the video-based material in the pre-session useful. Seventy six per cent (19/25) of respondents found that the flipped classroom approach resulted in the highest learning outcome, over the traditional approach (16%, 4/25). Barriers to the flipped classroom approach was technical problems with the video-based material, such as screen view.Conclusion: The flipped classroom approach is promising as an acceptable approach for teaching in health science curricular in higher education

    Flipped classroom improves student learning in dosage calculation, - a quasi-experimental control group design The flipped classroom method has received increased attention in health sciences education, however, few studies have investigated performance data showing its effectiveness. The aim of this study was to compare learning outcome in a flipped classroom with a standard lecture. The hypothesis was that applying a flipped classroom model in a dosage calculation class would improve learning outcome when compared to standard learning. One group was assigned to a flipped classroom (n=43), and the other group to a traditional lecture-based classroom (n=45). Data were collected through answer sheets and test results. Course content, assessments, and instructional time for both models were equivalent. The social educator students in the flipped group performed better in the test, compared to the traditional group, where the flipped group had 22% reduction in failing the exam.The flipped classroom approach is promising as an acceptable approach for teaching in dosage calculation curricular in higher education

    How to establish a healthy lifestyle in an overweight, inactive woman with an intellectual disabilityOverweight and obesity are associated with increased health risks and shortened life span. The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing, and a higher prevalence of obesity has been observed in persons with intellectual disability than in the general population. In this study, we want to establish a healthy lifestyle with a healthy diet and increased physical activity in an obese, inactive women with intellectual disability. Using interventions based on applied behavioural analysis, the women have established new habits in terms of diet and increased physical activity. The number of hours with physical activity per week has doubled, and both weight and waist circumference decreased during the eight weeks of the study. She maintained her new healthy lifestyle, after the study. More research is needed in interventions that can help reduce obesity in persons with intellectual disability

    Improving routines for patients with vagus nerve stimulationBackground: Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) is a form of therapy which may reduce the frequency of seizures in people with epilepsy, who do not achieve remission with antiepileptic drugs. A corresponding magnet providing an additional dose of stimulation may stop or shorten the intensity of the seizure.Objective Investigate the practice and procedure regarding use and storage of a VNS Therapy magnet, to see whether introduction of a new routine with a permanent seat for VNS magnet may contribute to increased availability of the magnet.Method Registration of the magnets location was performed before, and after the magnetic board intervention. In addition staff answered a questionnaire related to experiences around storage of magnet.Results The number of not located magnets dropped from 70% to 25 % after the intervention.Conclusion A magnetic board as a storage area for VNS magnet on the patient's room increases the availability of the magnet

    Duration of Lactation, Maternal Metabolic Profile, and Body Composition in the Norwegian EBBA I-Study

    Objective There is conflicting evidence as to whether duration of lactation may decrease the risk of subsequent development of an unfavorable maternal metabolic profile including overweight and obesity. We hypothesized that duration of lactation is associated with a more favorable metabolic profile and healthier anthropometrical measurements. Methods 98 parous women from the Norwegian EBBA I-study (Energy Balance and Breast cancer Aspects-study), a cross-sectional study of healthy premenopausal women aged 25–35 years, historical lactation data were collected, anthropometrical measurements were taken, fasting blood samples (serum glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol) were drawn and women were asked to fill in a pre-coded food diary. Results Mean time since last birth was 4.7 years, mean number of children was 1.9, mean total duration of lactation was 19 months and average length of lactation per child was 10.3 months. Women who on average lactated for less than 10 months per child had higher mean levels of fasting serum glucose (5.2 mmol/L vs. 5.0 mmol/L, p = 0.04), serum triglyceride (0.91 mmol/L vs. 0.66 mmol/L, p = 0.001) and serum cholesterol (4.78 mmol/L vs. 4.32 mmol/L, p = 0.004), and a higher waist-to-hip ratio (0.81 vs. 0.77, p = 0.001) than women who lactated for 10 months or more per child. The inverse association between average length of lactation per child and waist-to-hip ratio persisted after adjustment for potential confounders. Conclusions These results support the hypothesis that duration of lactation may be associated with a healthier metabolic profile and healthier anthropometrical measurements, especially lipid levels and waist-to-hip ratio even years after weanin

    Using ‘concept cartoons’ in combination with a digital student-response system to support learning in Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry in nursing education: A teaching strategy to promote student-active learning

    Bakgrunn: Gode kunnskaper i anatomi, fysiologi og biokjemi (AFB) er nødvendig for at sykepleierstudenter skal kunne utvikle et klinisk blikk. Resultater fra nasjonal eksamen i AFB viser at mange sykepleierstudenter strever med dette emnet. Studentaktive læringsformer i undervisningen kan bidra til økt kognitivt engasjement hos studentene. Bruk av concept cartoons (CC) sammen med digitalt student-respons-system (SRS) kan anvendes som undervisningsstrategi for å fremme studentaktivitet i store studentgrupper. CC består av illustrasjoner som presenterer både vitenskapelig aksepterte påstander og feilforestillinger om sentrale begreper og prosesser i AFB. Hensikt: Hensikten med denne studien var å beskrive hvordan CC i kombinasjon med digital SRS kan benyttes som en studentaktiv læringsform i ulike undervisningsformer for å støtte sykepleierstudenters læring i AFB. Metode: Studien har et kvasieksperimentelt deskriptivt kvantitativt design. CC ble anvendt sammen med SRS i digital undervisning ved sykepleierutdanningen ved tre universiteter/høgskoler høsten 2020 (n = 92–671). Anvendelsen av CC fulgte tenk–par–del-modellen, og studentene stemte på samme CC tre ganger i samme undervisningsøkt. Data ble analysert ved bruk av frekvensanalyser, Cochrans Q og Chi-square test. Resultat: Det var en økning i prosentandelen studenter som valgte det beste svaralternativet mellom de tre avstemningene. For de fleste CC var det en særlig økning i prosentandelen beste svar ved andre avstemning, etter at svaralternativene hadde blitt diskutert med medstudenter. Konklusjon: CC kan støtte læringen av sentrale begreper og fysiologiske prosesser. Undervisningsstrategien med CC i kombinasjon med digital SRS kan egne seg til å fremme studentaktiv læring, særlig i forelesning.Background:Sufficient knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry (AFB) is necessary for nursing stu-dents to develop a clinical gaze. Results from the national examination show that many students struggle with thissubject. Student-active learning can contribute to increased cognitive engagement among students. In this context,the use of concept cartoons (CC) together with a digital student-response system (SRS) can be appropriate. CC con-sists of illustrations presenting both scientifically accepted claims and misconceptions about concepts and pro-cesses in AFB.Aim:The study aimed to describe how CC, in combination with digital SRS, can be used as a student-active learn-ing strategy in various forms of teaching, to support nursing students’learning in AFB.Methods:The study has a quasi-experimental descriptive quantitative design. CC was used together with SRS indigital lectures in nursing education at three universities/colleges in autumn 2020, n=92–671. The application follo-wed the Think-Pair-Share model, and the students voted on the same CC three times during the lesson. Frequencyanalyses, Cochran’s Q and Chi-square test were applied for data analyses.Results:There was an increase in the proportion of students who chose the best response option between the threepolls. For most CCs, there was a particular increase in the proportion of best responses at the second poll, after theresponse options had been discussed with fellow students.Conclusion:CC might support the learning of concepts and physiological processes.     Lean Fish Consumption Is Associated with Beneficial Changes in the Metabolic Syndrome Components: A 13-Year Follow-Up Study from the Norwegian Tromsø Study

    Background: Fish consumption may have beneficial effects on metabolic syndrome (MetS); however, limited information of such associations exists. This study investigated possible associations between fish consumption and changes in MetS components during a 13-year follow-up period. Methods: The sample included participants (26–69 years) from the Tromsø Study 4 (1994–1995, n = 23,907) and Tromsø Study 6 (2007–2008, n = 12,981). Data were collected using questionnaires including food frequency questions, non-fasting blood samples, and physical examinations. MetS was defined using the Joint Interim Societies (JIS) definition, in which one point was given for each MetS criteria fulfilled (metabolic score). Longitudinal analyses were performed using Linear mixed models. Results: For both genders, lean fish consumption once a week or more was significantly associated with decreased future metabolic score, decreased triglycerides, and increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, whereas decreased waist circumference and blood pressure was identified only for men (age adjusted models). Fatty fish consumption was significantly associated with increased waist circumference for both genders and increased HDL-cholesterol levels in men. Conclusion: The results suggest that fatty and lean fish consumption may influence MetS differently and that lean fish consumption in particular seems to be associated with beneficial changes in the MetS components

    Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of risk factors for cardiovascular disease that include abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia and hypertension. Fish consumption may be a useful component when aiming to improve components of MetS. The main aim of this thesis was to identify associations between fish consumption and MetS and its components. Data was collected from the Norwegian Tromsø Study, Tromsø 4 (1994–1995) and Tromsø 6 (2007-2008) through questionnaires, anthropometrical measurements, and blood samples. Current literature was reviewed before possible associations at each time-point and changes during the 13-year period from Tromsø 4 to Tromsø 6 were addressed. Overall, lean fish consumption was associated with decreased risk of MetS, and beneficial changes in several of the MetS components, whereas fatty fish consumption was not associated with such beneficial changes
