    Current Trends in Design and Analysis of Paper Machine Foundations

    Current trends in the design and dynamic analysis of paper machine foundations to ensure satisfactory performance are presented in this paper. Space frame foundations for modern high speed paper machines are governed by the requirements to meet stringent alignment/deflection tolerances and dynamic stiffness requirements specified by the machine manufacturer. The current design approach considers the complete machine-foundation-soil interaction. The dynamic response analysis is commonly conducted using a suitable finite element computer code in which the soil is modelled by equivalent springs. Damping is also included in the response calculation. Appropriate stiffness and damping parameters to model the foundation soil or soil/pile system are obtained from complex, frequency-dependent impedance functions derived from analytical and numerical solutions of continuum foundation models. Two case histories are presented to illustrate the use of forced vibration testing to aid in the machine foundation design process

    Water taro root plants are wild plants mostly found abundantly in swamp area in the middle of the jungle and along the Kapuas river bank. Taro root plants are like creeping roots on trees with the roots dangling down along the tree height, with an estimate length 3 up to 7 metres. The shapes of these plants resemble stem nut, and if the inside part of taro root plants are pared, there is strong root of taro root plants to bind off. At a glance, the plants look like processed rattan, but taro root plants are much better due to their smooth and strong texture of the roots which makes the plants easy to be plaited into various handicraft. These plants are suitable as raw materials for webbing. For webbing handicraft, taro root plants are the typical commodity from West Kalimantan especially because of the raw matarials of these plants can only be found in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. Having seen a huge market opportunity in Pontianak, this business in promosing.     Asymptotics of relative heat traces and determinants on open surfaces of finite area

    The goal of this paper is to prove that on surfaces with asymptotically cusp ends the relative determinant of pairs of Laplace operators is well defined. We consider a surface with cusps (M,g) and a metric h on the surface that is a conformal transformation of the initial metric g. We prove the existence of the relative determinant of the pair (Δh,Δg)(\Delta_{h},\Delta_{g}) under suitable conditions on the conformal factor. The core of the paper is the proof of the existence of an asymptotic expansion of the relative heat trace for small times. We find the decay of the conformal factor at infinity for which this asymptotic expansion exists and the relative determinant is defined. Following the paper by B. Osgood, R. Phillips and P. Sarnak about extremal of determinants on compact surfaces, we prove Polyakov's formula for the relative determinant and discuss the extremal problem inside a conformal class.     A "Class-A2" ultra-low-loss magnetic ballast for T5 fluorescent lamps - A new trend for sustainable lighting technology

    The high-voltage and low-current features of T5 lamps imply that the copper and core losses of the magnetic ballast can be greatly reduced. This paper shows that magnetic ballasts for high-voltage T5 lamps are not only feasible but their luminous and ballast-loss performance can be better than those of the electronic ballasts. Contrary to common belief, high frequency operation of T5 28 W lamps increases the luminous efficacy by an average of 3.6% only (less than 5%). Practical implementation of an ultra-low-loss magnetic ballast system for T5 28 W lamps is presented. Its total system power is less than the 32 W upper limit specified for Class A2 of energy-efficient electronic ballast for T5 28 W lamps. High-luminous efficacy of 75.63-77.66 lm/W can be achieved. This important breakthrough has the potential of reversing the existing trend of using electronic ballasts as the energy-saving technology in lighting industry. With a better luminous efficacy, lower product and maintenance costs, much longer lifetime, and the use of recyclable metallic materials over its electronic counterparts, this patent-pending proposal provides a truly sustainable lighting solution to the lighting industry. © 2006 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    A novel three-class ROC method for eQTL analysis

    The problem of identifying genetic factors underlying complex and quantitative traits such as height, weight and disease susceptibility in natural populations has become a major theme of research in recent years. Aiming at revealing the inter-dependency and causal relationship between the underlying genotypes and observed phenotypes, researchers from different areas have developed a variety of methods for expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) mapping. Most of these methods rely on resampling-based algorithms that are computationally very expensive. To overcome the disadvantages of the current techniques, we propose a novel nonparametric method based on the volume under surface (VUS) within the framework of three-class receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis.     Waterpipe smoking in students: Prevalence, risk factors, symptoms of addiction, and smoke intake. Evidence from one British university

    Background: Anecdotal reports suggest waterpipe smoking is becoming common in students in western countries. The aim was to examine prevalence, risk factors, symptoms of addiction, and smoke intake. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey of students with subsidiary survey of regular waterpipe user and survey of exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) before and after waterpipe smoking in customers of a waterpipe café. 937 students of Birmingham University completed the initial survey with a follow up of 21 regular waterpipe smokers. 63 customers of a waterpipe café near the University completed the study of CO intake. Results: 355 (37.9%, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 34.8 to 41.1%) students had tried waterpipes,the prevalence of trying rising with duration at University. 75 (8.0%, 95%CI 6.4 to 10.0%) were regular smokers, similar to the prevalence of cigarette smoking (9.4%). Although cigarette smoking was the major risk factor for being a regular waterpipe smoker, odds ratio (95%CI) 2.77 (1.52 to 5.06), 65% of waterpipe smokers did not smoke cigarettes. Seven of 21 (33.3%) regular waterpipe smokers experienced cravings. Nearly all regular waterpipe users thought it less harmful than smoking cigarettes. The mean (standard deviation) rise in CO was 37.4 (25.8)ppm, nearly twice as high as a typical cigarette smoker seeking cessation treatment. Conclusion: Waterpipe smoking is a common part of student culture in one British university, as in the Middle East and in the United States.
