    The role of law and ethics in developing business management as a profession

    Currently, business management is far from being recognised as a profession. This paper suggests that a professional spirit should be developed which could function as a filter of commercial reasoning. Broadly, management will not be organised within the framework of a well-established profession unless formal knowledge, licensing, professional autonomy and professional codes of conduct are developed sufficiently. In developing business management as a profession, law may play a key role. Where the idea is that business management should be more professsionalised, managers must show that they are willing to adopt ethical values, while arriving at business decisions. The paper argues that ethics cannot survive without legal regulation, which, in turn, will not be supported by law unless lawyers can find alternative solutions to the large mechanisms of the official society, secured by the monopolised coercion of the nation state. From a micro perspective of law and business ethics, communities can be developed with their own conventions, rules and standards that are generated and sanctioned within the boundaries of the communities themselves

    Diffusion-limited reactions on disordered surfaces with continuous distributions of binding energies

    We study the steady state of a stochastic particle system on a two-dimensional lattice, with particle influx, diffusion and desorption, and the formation of a dimer when particles meet. Surface processes are thermally activated, with (quenched) binding energies drawn from a \emph{continuous} distribution. We show that sites in this model provide either coverage or mobility, depending on their energy. We use this to analytically map the system to an effective \emph{binary} model in a temperature-dependent way. The behavior of the effective model is well-understood and accurately describes key quantities of the system: Compared with discrete distributions, the temperature window of efficient reaction is broadened, and the efficiency decays more slowly at its ends.     Temperature dependence of binary and ternary recombination of H3+ ions with electron

    We study binary and the recently discovered process of ternary He-assisted recombination of H3+ ions with electrons in a low temperature afterglow plasma. The experiments are carried out over a broad range of pressures and temperatures of an afterglow plasma in a helium buffer gas. Binary and He-assisted ternary recombination are observed and the corresponding recombination rate coefficients are extracted for temperatures from 77 K to 330 K. We describe the observed ternary recombination as a two-step mechanism: First, a rotationally-excited long-lived neutral molecule H3* is formed in electron-H3+ collisions. Second, the H3* molecule collides with a helium atom that leads to the formation of a very long-lived Rydberg state with high orbital momentum. We present calculations of the lifetimes of H3* and of the ternary recombination rate coefficients for para and ortho-H3+. The calculations show a large difference between the ternary recombination rate coefficients of ortho- and para-H3+ at temperatures below 300 K. The measured binary and ternary rate coefficients are in reasonable agreement with the calculated values.Comment: 15 page

    An Investigation into the Oil Transport and Starvation of Piston-Ring Pack

    In order to accurately predict the lubricant film thickness and generated friction in any tribological contact, it is important to determine appropriate boundary conditions, taking into account the oil availability and extent of starvation. This paper presents a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model of a piston ring pack for prediction of lubricant film thickness, friction and total power loss. The model takes into account starvation caused by reverse flow at the conjunctional inlet wedge, and applied to a ring pack, comprising a compression and scraper ring. Inlet boundaries are calculated for an engine cycle of a four-cylinder, four-stroke gasoline engine operating at 1500 r/min with conditions pertaining to the New European Drive Cycle. The analysis shows the two main sources of starvation: first, due to a physical lack of inlet meniscus and second, due to reverse flow at the inlet wedge significantly affecting the prevailing conditions from the generally assumed idealised boundary conditions. Such an approach has not hitherto been reported in literature

    Worm Structure in Modified Swift-Hohenberg Equation for Electroconvection

    A theoretical model for studying pattern formation in electroconvection is proposed in the form of a modified Swift-Hohenberg equation. A localized state is found in two dimension, in agreement with the experimentally observed ``worm" state. The corresponding one dimensional model is also studied, and a novel stationary localized state due to nonadiabatic effect is found. The existence of the 1D localized state is shown to be responsible for the formation of the two dimensional ``worm" state in our model

    Noise-Driven Mechanism for Pattern Formation

    We extend the mechanism for noise-induced phase transitions proposed by Ibanes et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 020601-1 (2001)] to pattern formation phenomena. In contrast with known mechanisms for pure noise-induced pattern formation, this mechanism is not driven by a short-time instability amplified by collective effects. The phenomenon is analyzed by means of a modulated mean field approximation and numerical simulations

    Killer whales (Orcinus orca) produce ultrasonic whistles

    This study reports that killer whales, the largest dolphin, produce whistles with the highest fundamental frequencies ever reported in a delphinid. Using wide-band acoustic sampling from both animal-attached (Dtag) and remotely deployed hydrophone arrays, ultrasonic whistles were detected in three Northeast Atlantic populations but not in two Northeast Pacific populations. These results are inconsistent with analyses suggesting a correlation of maximum frequency of whistles with body size in delphinids, indicate substantial intraspecific variation in whistle production in killer whales, and highlight the importance of appropriate acoustic sampling techniques when conducting comparative analyses of sound repertoires

    Rayleigh loops in the random-field Ising model on the Bethe lattice

    We analyze the demagnetization properties of the random-field Ising model on the Bethe lattice focusing on the beahvior near the disorder induced phase transition. We derive an exact recursion relation for the magnetization and integrate it numerically. Our analysis shows that demagnetization is possible only in the continous high disorder phase, where at low field the loops are described by the Rayleigh law. In the low disorder phase, the saturation loop displays a discontinuity which is reflected by a non vanishing magnetization m_\infty after a series of nested loops. In this case, at low fields the loops are not symmetric and the Rayleigh law does not hold.Comment: 8pages, 6 figure
