    A case-study of the lekgophung tourism lodge, South Africa

    The Lekgophung Lodge is a community-owned wildlife tourism lodge, located in the western part of the Madikwe Game Reserve in the North West Province of South Africa. The Lekgophung community is settled near the western boundary of this protected area. The key case-study question is: How and how much can community-owned lodge development within a protected wildlife area contribute towards sustainably improving livelihoods of households in communities bordering on the protected area? The study considers the following aspects: structural arrangements; funding; financial returns and ‘SMME’ (small, medium and micro enterprise) linkages; employment opportunities; skills acquisition and institution building; lodge governance; and development co-ordination. Direct benefits from the Lekgophung Lodge enterprise are expected to boost average household income in the village by about R3 150 per annum and overall disposable income by more than 26%. The rights and benefits to the Lekgophung community through the lodge are durably secured through a range of mechanisms including long-term lease rights, partnership contracts with private lodge operators, who are required to pay a fixed fee and a percentage of turnover to the community and participation by the community in a multi-stakeholder park-based development steering committee. The lodge is well-integrated with park and local government development initiatives. Although still in the construction phase, the lodge has added value at many levels. The project brings substantial economic benefits and works within the ënewí cost recovery paradigm of protected area management. However, the lodge remains dependent on a capital subsidy and private expertise mobilised via partnerships with the public and private sectors. In taking up lodge governance functions, the Trust and Lekgophung community could benefit from having tools and processes to assess the impact of the lodge on local livelihoods, and to monitor asset and livelihoods trends

    The contracting world of girls at puberty: Violence and gender-divergent access to the public sphere among adolescents in South Africa

    This Population Council working paper describes a participatory mapping project undertaken with single-sex groups of grade 5 and grade 8–9 children in urban and rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. At grade 5, female self-defined community areas were equal to or larger in size than those of males in both sites. However, wide gender divergence in access to the public sphere was found among grade 8–9 children. Although curtailed spatial access, especially in urban areas, is intended to protect post-pubescent girls, grade 8–9 girls reported most spaces in their small navigable areas unsafe. Reducing girls’ access to the public sphere does not increase their perceived safety, but may instead limit their access to opportunities for human development

    Taking Blockchain Seriously

    In the present techno-political moment it is clear that ignoring or dismissing the hype surrounding blockchain is unwise, and certainly for regulatory authorities and governments who must keep a grip on the technology and those promoting it, in order to ensure democratic accountability and regulatory legitimacy within the blockchain ecosystem and beyond. Blockchain is telling (and showing) us something very important about the evolution of capital and neoliberal economic reason, and the likely impact in the near future on forms and patterns of work, social organization, and, crucially, on communities and individuals who lack influence over the technologies and data that increasingly shape and control their lives. In this short essay I introduce some of the problems in the regulation of blockchain and offer counter-narratives aimed at cutting through the hype fuelling the ascendency of this most contemporary of technologies

    Speeching: Mobile Crowdsourced Speech Assessment to Support Self-Monitoring and Management for People with Parkinson's

    We present Speeching, a mobile application that uses crowdsourcing to support the self-monitoring and management of speech and voice issues for people with Parkinson's (PwP). The application allows participants to audio record short voice tasks, which are then rated and assessed by crowd workers. Speeching then feeds these results back to provide users with examples of how they were perceived by listeners unconnected to them (thus not used to their speech patterns). We conducted our study in two phases. First we assessed the feasibility of utilising the crowd to provide ratings of speech and voice that are comparable to those of experts. We then conducted a trial to evaluate how the provision of feedback, using Speeching, was valued by PwP. Our study highlights how applications like Speeching open up new opportunities for self-monitoring in digital health and wellbeing, and provide a means for those without regular access to clinical assessment services to practice-and get meaningful feedback on-their speech

    An archaeal family-B DNA polymerase variant able to replicate past DNA damage: occurrence of replicative and translesion synthesis polymerases within the B family

    A mutant of the high fidelity family-B DNA polymerase from the archaeon Thermococcus gorgonarius (Tgo-Pol), able to replicate past DNA lesions, is described. Gain of function requires replacement of the three amino acid loop region in the fingers domain of Tgo-Pol with a longer version, found naturally in eukaryotic Pol zeta (a family-B translesion synthesis polymerase). Inactivation of the 3'–5' proofreading exonuclease activity is also necessary. The resulting Tgo-Pol Z1 variant is proficient at initiating replication from base mismatches and can read through damaged bases, such as abasic sites and thymine photo-dimers. Tgo-Pol Z1 is also proficient at extending from primers that terminate opposite aberrant bases. The fidelity of Tgo-Pol Z1 is reduced, with amarked tendency tomake changes at G:C base pairs. Together, these results suggest that the loop region of the fingers domain may play a critical role in determining whether a family-B enzyme falls into the accurate genome-replicating category or is an errorprone translesion synthesis polymerase. Tgo-Pol Z1 may also be useful for amplification of damaged DNA
