Community College Faculty: Exploring the Process by which They Determine and Manage Interpersonal Boundaries with Students
Higher education instruction is a relational practice that requires skill, reflection, and intentional effort. Faculty-student relationships are critical to learning. Interpersonal boundaries between community college faculty and students are a dimension of the faculty-student relationship that is under-researched and minimally understood.
The purpose of this research was to qualitatively and phenomenologically explore faculty perceptions of their awareness of boundaries between themselves and community college students. Data were collected from seven faculty who work at a large Northwestern community college. Interviews were conducted to explore faculty perceptions of how they become aware of, arrive at, and negotiate change of their interpersonal boundaries between themselves and community college students.
Data resulted in themes that gave insight to faculty experience of general boundaries, how course content and teaching strategies reflect their boundaries, and how opportunities to negotiate boundaries are inexplicably tied to the uniqueness of the community college student and setting. The results could assist ongoing teaching and learning opportunities for community college faculty
Contrast-enhanced computed tomography in acute pancreatitis: does contrast medium worsen its course due to impaired microcirculation?
Background: An early and accurate diagnosis of severe acute (necrotizing) pancreatitis is important to allow timely institution of therapy to limit the extra-pancreatic sequelae of this necrotizing process and to minimize the incidence of super-infection of the necrosis (i.e., progression to infected necrosis). Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) has become the cornerstone of diagnosis by confirming the clinical diagnosis of severe acute pancreatitis based on the various clinical scoring criteria. Moreover, CECT serves as an anatomic roadmap for guiding radiological and surgical interventions. However, still-controversial experimental studies in animals in the mid-1990s suggested that the use of intravenous radiographic contrast media early in the course of the disease might exacerbate the necrotizing process by further impairing the already compromised pancreatic microcirculation. A series of experimental and clinical studies followed that have both refuted and supported this claim; unfortunately, none is conclusive, and the topic remains, as yet, unresolved. Aims: Our objective was to review objectively the available literature found by a Medline search on this subject. Methods: Meta-analysis and review. Changes in benthic ecosystems and ocean circulation in the Southeast Atlantic across Eocene Thermal Maximum 2
Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 (ETM2) occurred -1.8 Myr after the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) and, like the PETM, was characterized by a negative carbon isotope excursion and warming. We combined benthic foraminiferal and sedimentological records for Southeast Atlantic Sites 1263 (1500 m paleodepth) and 1262 (3600 m paleodepth) to show that benthic foraminiferal diversity and accumulation rates declined more precipitously and severely at the shallower site during peak ETM2. As the sites are in close proximity, differences in surface productivity cannot have caused this differential effect. Instead, we infer that changes in ocean circulation across ETM2 may have produced more pronounced warming at intermediate depths (Site 1263). The effects of warming include increased metabolic rates, a decrease in effective food supply and increased deoxygenation, thus potentially explaining the more severe benthic impacts at Site 1263. In response, bioturbation may have decreased more at Site 1263 than at Site 1262, differentially affecting bulk carbonate records. We use a sediment-enabled Earth system model to test whether a reduction in bioturbation and/or the likely reduced carbonate saturation of more poorly ventilated waters can explain the more extreme excursion in bulk δ C and sharper transition in wt % CaCO at Site 1263. We find that both enhanced acidification and reduced bioturbation during the ETM2 peak are needed to account for the observed features. Our combined ecological and modeling analysis illustrates the potential role of ocean circulation changes in amplifying local environmental changes and driving temporary, but drastic, loss of benthic biodiversity and abundance. 13
BOSS Ultracool Dwarfs I: Colors and Magnetic Activity of M and L dwarfs
We present the colors and activity of ultracool (M7-L8) dwarfs from the Tenth
Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We combine previous
samples of SDSS M and L dwarfs with new data obtained from the Baryon
Oscillation Sky Survey (BOSS) to produce the BOSS Ultracool Dwarf (BUD) sample
of 11820 M7-L8 dwarfs. By combining SDSS data with photometry from the Two
Micron All Sky Survey and the Wide-Field Infrared Sky Explorer mission, we
present ultracool dwarf colors from to as a function of spectral
type, and extend the SDSS-2MASS-WISE color locus to include ultracool dwarfs.
The , , and colors provide the best indication of spectral type
for M7-L3 dwarfs. We also examine ultracool dwarf chromospheric activity
through the presence and strength of H emission. The fraction of active
dwarfs rises through the M spectral sequence until it reaches 90% at
spectral type L0. The fraction of active dwarfs then declines to 50% at
spectral type L5; no H emission is observed in the late-L dwarfs in the
BUD sample. The fraction of active L0-L5 dwarfs is much higher than previously
observed. The strength of activity declines with spectral type from M7 through
L3, after which the data do not show a clear trend. Using one-dimensional
chromosphere models, we explore the range of filling factors and chromospheric
temperature structures that are consistent with H observations of M0-L7
dwarfs. M dwarf chromospheres have a similar, smoothly varying range of
temperature and surface coverage while L dwarf chromospheres are cooler and

ABSTRACT: In the northwestern Gulf of Mexico beds of rhodoliths and unconsolidated rubble are associated with unique offshore deep bank habitats, the salt domes or diapirs that are peculiar to that part of the northern Gulf. In contrast to being mainly composed of crustose corallines (or foraminifera), rhodoliths in the NW Gulf of Mexico at depths of 40-85 m are instead dominated by red algal crust-forming members of Peyssonneliaceae
