    PSR B0809+74: Understanding Its Perplexing Subpulse-separation (P2) Variations

    The longitude separation between adjacent drifting subpulses, P2P_2, is roughly constant for many pulsars. It was then perplexing when pulsar B0809+74 was found to exhibit substantial variations in this measure, both with wavelength and with longitude position within the pulse window. We analyze these variations between 40 and 1400 MHz, and we show that they stem primarily from the incoherent superposition of the two orthogonal modes of polarization.Comment: Submitted for publication Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Robustness and Generalization

    We derive generalization bounds for learning algorithms based on their robustness: the property that if a testing sample is "similar" to a training sample, then the testing error is close to the training error. This provides a novel approach, different from the complexity or stability arguments, to study generalization of learning algorithms. We further show that a weak notion of robustness is both sufficient and necessary for generalizability, which implies that robustness is a fundamental property for learning algorithms to work

    A Galaxy-Weighted Measure of the Relative Peculiar Velocity Dispersion

    The relative pair dispersion of galaxies has for the past decade been the standard measure of the thermal energy of fluctuations in the observed galaxy distribution. This statistic is known to be unstable, since it is a pair-weighted measure that is very sensitive to rare, rich clusters of galaxies. As a more stable alternative, we here present a single-particle-weighted statistic σ1\sigma_1, which can be considered as an estimate of the one-dimensional rms peculiar velocity dispersion of galaxies relative to their neighbors, and which can be interpreted by means of a filtered version of the Cosmic-Energy equation. We calculate this statistic for the all-sky survey of IRAS galaxies, finding σ1=95±16\sigma_1=95 \pm 16 km/sec. The UGC catalog yields a higher value, σ1=130±15\sigma_1=130 \pm 15 km/s. We calibrate our procedure by means of mock catalogs constructed from N-body simulations and find that our method is stable and has modest biases which can easily be corrected. We use the measured values of σ1\sigma_1 in a filtered Layzer-Irvine equation to obtain an estimate of Ω~≥Ω/b2\tilde\Omega \equiv \Omega/b^2. We find that Ω~≈0.14±0.05\tilde\Omega\approx 0.14 \pm 0.05 for both the IRAS and UGC catalogs, which is slightly lower than other recent determinations, but is consistent with a trend of an effective Ω\Omega that increases gradually with scale.Comment: 21 pages, plain Tex, including 3 figures. to appear in the Astrophysical Journa

    Multibeam bathymetric surveys of submarine volcanoes and mega-pockmarks on the Chatham Rise, New Zealand

The definitive version was published in New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics 54 (2011): 329-339, doi:10.1080/00288306.2011.589860.Multibeam bathymetric surveys east of the South Island of New Zealand present images of submarine volcanoes and pockmarks west of Urry Knolls on the Chatham Rise, and evidence of submarine erosion on the southern margin of the Chatham Rise. Among numerous volcanic cones, diameters of the largest reach ~2000 m, and some stand as high as 400 m above the surrounding seafloor. The tops of most of the volcanic cones are flat, with hints of craters, and some with asymmetric shapes may show flank collapses. There are hints of both northeast-southwest and northwest-southeast alignments of volcanoes, but no associated faulting is apparent. Near and to the west of these volcanoes, huge pockmarks, some more than ~1 km in diameter, disrupt bottom topography. Pockmarks in this region seem to be confined to sea floor shallower than ~1200 m, but we see evidence of deeper pockmarks at water depths of up to 2100 m on profiles crossing the Bounty Trough. The pockmark field on the Chatham Rise seems to be bounded on the south by a trough near 1200 m depth; like others, we presume that contour currents have eroded the margin and created the trough.This research was supported by the National Science Foundation under grants EAR-0409564, EAR-0409609, and EAR-0409835.2012-08-3

    On the pivotal role of PPARa in adaptation of the heart to hypoxia and why fat in the diet increases hypoxic injury

    The role of peroxisome proliferator activated alpha (PPARα) -mediated metabolic remodeling in cardiac adaptation to hypoxia has yet to be defined. Here, mice were housed in hypoxia for 3 weeks before in vivo contractile function was measured using cine magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. In isolated, perfused hearts, energetics were measured using 31P MR spectroscopy and glycolysis and fatty acid oxidation were measured using 3H labelling. Compared with normoxic, chow-fed control mouse heart, hypoxia decreased PPARα expression, fatty acid oxidation and mitochondrial UCP3 levels, while increasing glycolysis, all of which served to maintain normal ATP concentrations and thereby ejection fractions. A high-fat diet increased cardiac PPARα expression, fatty acid oxidation and UCP3 levels, with decreased glycolysis. Hypoxia was unable to alter the high PPARα expression or reverse the metabolic changes caused by the high fat diet, with the result that ATP concentrations and contractile function decreased significantly. The adaptive metabolic changes caused by hypoxia in control mouse hearts were found to have already occurred in PPARα-/- mouse hearts, and sustained function in hypoxia despite an inability for further metabolic remodelling. We conclude that decreased cardiac PPARα expression is essential for adaptive metabolic remodelling in hypoxia, but is prevented by dietary fat

    An NLO QCD analysis of inclusive cross-section and jet-production data from the ZEUS experiment

    The ZEUS inclusive differential cross-section data from HERA, for charged and neutral current processes taken with e+ and e- beams, together with differential cross-section data on inclusive jet production in e+ p scattering and dijet production in \gamma p scattering, have been used in a new NLO QCD analysis to extract the parton distribution functions of the proton. The input of jet data constrains the gluon and allows an accurate extraction of \alpha_s(M_Z) at NLO; \alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1183 \pm 0.0028(exp.) \pm 0.0008(model) An additional uncertainty from the choice of scales is estimated as \pm 0.005.     High-E_T dijet photoproduction at HERA

    The cross section for high-E_T dijet production in photoproduction has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 81.8 pb-1. The events were required to have a virtuality of the incoming photon, Q^2, of less than 1 GeV^2 and a photon-proton centre-of-mass energy in the range 142 < W < 293 GeV. Events were selected if at least two jets satisfied the transverse-energy requirements of E_T(jet1) > 20 GeV and E_T(jet2) > 15 GeV and pseudorapidity requirements of -1 < eta(jet1,2) < 3, with at least one of the jets satisfying -1 < eta(jet) < 2.5. The measurements show sensitivity to the parton distributions in the photon and proton and effects beyond next-to-leading order in QCD. Hence these data can be used to constrain further the parton densities in the proton and photon.Comment: 36 pages, 13 figures, 20 tables, including minor revisions from referees. Accepted by Phys.     Measurement of event shapes in deep inelastic scattering at HERA

    Inclusive event-shape variables have been measured in the current region of the Breit frame for neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering using an integrated luminosity of 45.0 pb^-1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The variables studied included thrust, jet broadening and invariant jet mass. The kinematic range covered was 10 < Q^2 < 20,480 GeV^2 and 6.10^-4 < x < 0.6, where Q^2 is the virtuality of the exchanged boson and x is the Bjorken variable. The Q dependence of the shape variables has been used in conjunction with NLO perturbative calculations and the Dokshitzer-Webber non-perturbative corrections (`power corrections') to investigate the validity of this approach.Comment: 7+25 pages, 6 figure
