The mass-metallicity relation of local active galaxies
We systematically measure the gas-phase metallicities and the
mass-metallicity relation of a large sample of local active galaxies for the
first time. Observed emission-line fluxes from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS) are compared to a four-dimensional grid of photoionization models using
the Bayesian parameter estimation code NebulaBayes. For the first time we take
into account arbitrary mixing between HII region and narrow-line region (NLR)
emission, and the models are also varied with metallicity, ionization parameter
in the NLR, and the gas pressure. The active galactic nucleus (AGN) oxygen
abundance is found to increase by dex as a function
of host galaxy stellar mass over the range .
We also measure the metallicity and ionization parameter of 231000 star-forming
galaxies for comparison with the sample of 7670 Seyfert 2 galaxies. A
systematic offset in oxygen abundance of 0.09 dex is observed between the
mass-metallicity relations of the star-forming and active galaxies. We
investigate potential causes of the offset, including sample selection and the
treatment in the models of diffuse ionized gas, pressure, and ionization
parameter. We cannot identify the major cause(s), but suspect contributions due
to deficiencies in modeling the ionizing spectra and the treatment of dust
physics. Optical diagnostic diagrams are presented with the star-forming and
Seyfert data colored by the inferred oxygen abundance, ionization parameter and
gas pressure, clearly illustrating the trends in these quantities.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures and 1 table; accepted for publication in Ap
Control of shape and size of poly (lactic acid) microspheres based on surfactant and polymer concentration
Biodegradable, poly (lactic acid) (PLA) microspheres have been synthesized via solvent evaporation method using ultrasonic homogenizer as emulsifier. The effect of added surfactant, PVA [poly (vinyl alcohol)], and PLA concentration on the shape and size of the resultant PLA microspheres has been studied. The prime objective of this work was to identify an optimal PVA/PLA concentration to prepare PLA microsphere with a size distribution of 1–2 micrometers as in many literature it has been reported as ideal range of size for non-endocytosis-mediated cellular drug delivery. In this pursuit it was found that an optimal concentration of 2.5% w/v of PVA into water and 2.5% w/v PLA into DCM [Dichloromethane] is suitable to create PLA microspheres with a size distribution of 1–2 micrometers. The PLA microspheres were characterized by FESEM to assess their shape and size. FT-IR analysis (Supplementary data) was used to assess the functional groups present in the PLA microspheres, whilst zeta-potential measurements (Supplementary data) provided insight into the likely dispersion properties of the microspheres in aqueous media

Cytotoxic Aggregation and Amyloid Formation by the Myostatin Precursor Protein
Myostatin, a negative regulator of muscle growth, has been implicated in sporadic inclusion body myositis (sIBM). sIBM is the most common age-related muscle-wastage disease with a pathogenesis similar to that of amyloid disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Myostatin precursor protein (MstnPP) has been shown to associate with large molecular weight filamentous inclusions containing the Alzheimer's amyloid beta peptide in sIBM tissue, and MstnPP is upregulated following ER stress. The mechanism for how MstnPP contributes to disease pathogenesis is unknown. Here, we show for the first time that MstnPP is capable of forming amyloid fibrils in vitro. When MstnPP-containing Escherichia coli inclusion bodies are refolded and purified, a proportion of MstnPP spontaneously misfolds into amyloid-like aggregates as characterised by electron microscopy and binding of the amyloid-specific dye thioflavin T. When subjected to a slightly acidic pH and elevated temperature, the aggregates form straight and unbranched amyloid fibrils 15 nm in diameter and also exhibit higher order amyloid structures. Circular dichroism spectroscopy reveals that the amyloid fibrils are dominated by β-sheet and that their formation occurs via a conformational change that occurs at a physiologically relevant temperature. Importantly, MstnPP aggregates and protofibrils have a negative effect on the viability of myoblasts. These novel results show that the myostatin precursor protein is capable of forming amyloid structures in vitro with implications for a role in sIBM pathogenesis
Zombie Hard disks - Data from the Living Dead
There have been a number of studies conducted in relation to data remaining on disks purchased on the second hand market. A large number of these studies have indicated that a proportion of these disks contain a degree of residual data placed on the drive by the original owners. The Security Research Centre at BT has sponsored a residual data study over the last five years examining disks sourced around the globe, in the UK, USA, Germany France and Australia. In 2008 as part of a 5 year study, Glamorgan University in conjunction with Edith Cowan University in Australia, Longwood University in Virginia USA and the BT Security Research Centre completed the fourth annual disk study aimed at assessing the volume and nature of information that remains on computer hard disks offered for sale on the second hand market. One of the main findings of the study was the high proportion of disks that are sold in a non-functioning state. As in both previous and following years a percentage of the hard disks examined in the 2008 study failed the imaging process and were marked as faulty. This paper describes further analysis of a number of these faulty drives from the UK sample set of the 2008 study. This paper details the analysis of non-functioning disks supplied to the University of Glamorgan to determine the ease with which data can be recovered from these drives using specialist recovery tools. It discusses implications for both computer forensics and information security practices and procedures
Optimal sampling design for spatial capture-recapture
Spatial capture-recapture (SCR) has emerged as the industry standard for estimating population density by leveraging information from spatial locations of repeat encounters of individuals. The precision of density estimates depends fundamentally on the number and spatial configuration of traps. Despite this knowledge, existing sampling design recommendations are heuristic and their performance remains untested for most practical applications. To address this issue, we propose a genetic algorithm that minimizes any sensible, criteria-based objective function to produce near-optimal sampling designs. To motivate the idea of optimality, we compare the performance of designs optimized using three model-based criteria related to the probability of capture. We use simulation to show that these designs out-perform those based on existing recommendations in terms of bias, precision, and accuracy in the estimation of population size. Our approach, available as a function in the R package oSCR, allows conservation practitioners and researchers to generate customized and improved sampling designs for wildlife monitoring.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Interrogating Seyferts with NebulaBayes: Spatially probing the narrow-line region radiation fields and chemical abundances
NebulaBayes is a new Bayesian code that implements a general method of
comparing observed emission-line fluxes to photoionization model grids. The
code enables us to extract robust, spatially resolved measurements of
abundances in the extended narrow line regions (ENLRs) produced by Active
Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We observe near-constant ionization parameters but
steeply radially-declining pressures, which together imply that radiation
pressure regulates the ENLR density structure on large scales. Our sample
includes four `pure Seyfert' galaxies from the S7 survey that have extensive
ENLRs. NGC2992 shows steep metallicity gradients from the nucleus into the
ionization cones. An {\it inverse} metallicity gradient is observed in
ESO138-G01, which we attribute to a recent gas inflow or minor merger. A
uniformly high metallicity and hard ionizing continuum are inferred across the
ENLR of Mrk573. Our analysis of IC5063 is likely affected by contamination from
shock excitation, which appears to soften the inferred ionizing spectrum. The
peak of the ionizing continuum E_peak is determined by the nuclear spectrum and
the absorbing column between the nucleus and the ionized nebula. We cannot
separate variation in this intrinsic E_peak from the effects of shock or HII
region contamination, but E_peak measurements nevertheless give insights into
ENLR excitation. We demonstrate the general applicability of NebulaBayes by
analyzing a nuclear spectrum from the non-active galaxy NGC4691 using a HII
region grid. The NLR and HII region model grids are provided with NebulaBayes
for use by the astronomical community.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 29 pages with 10 figures and 3

A novel 18F-labelled high affinity agent for PET imaging of the translocator protein
The translocator protein (TSPO) is an important target for imaging focal neuroinflammation in diseases such as brain cancer, stroke and neurodegeneration, but current tracers for non-invasive imaging of TSPO have important limitations. We present the synthesis and evaluation of a novel 3-fluoromethylquinoline-2-carboxamide, AB5186, which was prepared in eight steps using a one-pot two component indium(III)-catalysed reaction for the rapid and efficient assembly of the 4-phenylquinoline core. Biological assessment and the implementation of a physicochemical study showed AB5186 to have low nanomolar affinity for TSPO, as well as optimal plasma protein binding and membrane permeability properties. Generation of [18F]-AB5186 through 18F incorporation was achieved in good radiochemical yield and subsequent in vitro and ex vivo autoradiography revealed the ability of this compound to bind with specificity to TSPO in mouse glioblastoma xenografts. Initial positron emission tomography imaging of a glioma bearing mouse and a healthy baboon support the potential for [18F]-AB5186 use as a radiotracer for non-invasive TSPO imaging in vivo
Polymerisable octahedral rhenium cluster complexes as precursors for photo/electroluminescent polymers
New polymerisable photoluminescent octahedral rhenium cluster complexes trans-[{Re₆Q₈}(TBP)₄VB)₂] (Q = S or Se; TBP – p-tert-butylpyridine; VB – vinyl benzoate) have been synthesised, characterised and used to construct rhe-nium cluster-organic polymer hybrid materials. These novel polymer systems are solution-processable and the rhenium clusters retain their photoluminescent properties within the polymer environment. Notably, when the rhenium cluster complexes are incorporated into the matrix of the electroluminescent polymer poly(N-vinylcarbazole), the resultant cluster polymer hybrid combined properties of both components and was used successfully in the construc-tion of a polymer light emitting diode (PLED). These prototype devices are the first PLEDs to incorporate octahedral rhenium clusters and provide the first direct evidence of the electroluminescent properties of rhenium clusters and indeed, to the best of our knowledge, of any member of the family of 24-electron hexanuclear cluster complexes of molybdenum, tungsten or rhenium
Ligand-enabled copper-mediated radioiodination of arenes
The discovery of a copper precatalyst that facilitates the key mechanistic steps of arene halodeboronation has allowed a step change in the synthesis of radioiodine-containing arenes. The active precatalyst [Cu(OAc)(phen)2]OAc was shown to perform room temperature radio-iododeboronation of aryl boronic acids with 1–2 mol % loadings and 10 min reaction times. These mild conditions enable particularly clean reactions, as demonstrated with the efficient preparation of the radiopharmaceutical and SPECT tracer, meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG).Peer reviewe
