Understanding changes on the country-of-origin effect of Portugal

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to understand the international perception of Portugal, as well as the strategies used by Portuguese companies to overcome any possible negative country-of-origin (COO) effect. The paper focuses on companies belonging to different Portuguese businesses: wine, footwear and electromechanical. Cases were chosen because of the dynamic process that was correctly put forward at different levels. The results show that Portuguese companies are interested in getting to know how to accommodate or be part of that dynamic process, as this seems to be crucial if they want to succeed in international markets. The perception of Portugal is improving, and there seems to be signs of a positive COO effect being created in some instances. Most of the achievements are due to the previous success of Portuguese businesses and businesspeople in international markets that have been able to create a positive reputation. The key to success seems to be rooted in how companies combine their unique resources with technological innovations and strategic tools, backed by public policy. This study contributes to enhance the knowledge of managers on the COO effect and its effects on companies, by presenting different levels of analysis: company, industry and country level.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

MOTIVATION AND SATISFACTION IN CONTEXT OF JOB TRAINING IN TOURIST ORGANIZATIONS

    Get PDF
This research aims to determine the dimensions of motivation and satisfaction, acquired, through the perception in context of job training, by future technicians (students) in the hospitality and tourism industry, particularly by technical courses in the hotel and restaurant sector. The methodology comprises three distinct stages. First were recovered instruments (questionnaires), already validated by other authors of motivation and satisfaction, which had the intention to replicate studies conducted in other scientific knowledge fields, such as tourism. Those instruments were recovered from the reviewed literature conducted about other themes. On second place the measuring instruments were submitted to a pre-test, or rather, were subject of a pioneer study, in order to verify other assumptions such as semantic errors or see if there was the possibility of some prepared questions to be consider invalidated by poor formulation or interpretation. Finally, were applied in three educational institutions who agreed to cooperate on the research, with the reservation that the interviewed needed a mandatory pre-requirement that consisted in conducting a minimum training in work context (TWC). Then, proceed the statistical analysis to support all the empirical part. The results show that, in general, motivation and satisfaction were present during the period of training in work context. To some people it meant a very important period of personal and professional life, concerning the interactions, emotions and involvement with touristic organizations but also the personal and social relationships

    Get PDF
Diversity analysis has an increasing importance in the analysis of forest stands, especially in multi-species ones, as a tool to evaluate stand structure and bring to light the differences in stand development through species interactions. The diversity analysis provides more detail to the traditional stand structure descriptions and enables the approach to stand management more consistent not only with the timber production, but also with other productions and values of the multi-benefit forest stands, and/or transformation processes. In literature many diversity measures can be found. The most commonly used are the diversity indices as they allow the quantification of the diversity features. In this study eight diversity indices were used to characterize the horizontal, vertical and spatial distribution of the individuals in multi-species stands, using a series of permanent plots, located in Serra da Lousã, Central Portugal. Diversity dynamics were evaluated with two successive measurements, in 2001 and 2009. The results revealed a tendency towards more diversity with the reduction of the number of maritime pine individuals and the development of other species, mainly sweet chestnut and English oak

Impact of territorial constraints on the optimization of forest accessibility. GIS Spatial Analysis for Quercus forests in National Park of Peneda-Gerês, northwest Portugal

    Get PDF
ArcGIS software was used for timber harvesting planning in four (4) different mountainous forest areas of Peneda-Gerês National Park (PNPG), located in Northwest Portugal. Orographic characteristics, such as slope and watershed systems features were considered. The different manual and mechanical timber extraction and concentration methods were also considered. The different typologies of roads network to access forests were also introduced in the models. The analysis allowed identifying forest areas with different accessibilities and orographic restrictions. Performed analysis also allowed the planning of additional roads necessary for timber extraction optimization, considering optimized site-by-site timber extraction methods. The proposal of accessibility improvement through new roads construction was also considered important for forest fire prevention and for fire direct combat. However, the present proposal of accessibility improvement is merely an academic exercise because nature conservation restrictions severely limit the construction of new forest roads. This methodological approach should be tested in other mountainous forest regions throughout Europe
