The ACIGA Data Analysis programme
The Data Analysis programme of the Australian Consortium for Interferometric
Gravitational Astronomy (ACIGA) was set up in 1998 by the first author to
complement the then existing ACIGA programmes working on suspension systems,
lasers and optics, and detector configurations. The ACIGA Data Analysis
programme continues to contribute significantly in the field; we present an

Mixed Chimerism, Lymphocyte Recovery, and Evidence for Early Donor-Specific Unresponsiveness in Patients Receiving Combined Kidney and Bone Marrow Transplantation to Induce Tolerance
Background
We have previously reported operational tolerance in patients receiving HLA-mismatched combined kidney and bone marrow transplantation (CKBMT). We now report on transient multilineage hematopoietic chimerism and lymphocyte recovery in five patients receiving a modified CKBMT protocol, and evidence for early donor-specific unresponsiveness in one of these patients.
Methods
Five patients with end-stage renal disease received CKBMT from HLA-mismatched, haploidentical living related donors following modified non-myeloablative conditioning. Polychromatic flow cytometry (FCM) was used to assess multilineage chimerism where evaluable and lymphocyte recovery post-transplant. Limiting dilution analysis was used to assess helper-T-lymphocyte reactivity to donor antigens.
Results
Transient multilineage mixed chimerism was observed in all patients but chimerism became undetectable by 2 weeks post-CKBMT. A marked decrease in T and B lymphocyte counts immediately following transplant was followed by gradual recovery. Initially recovering T cells were depleted of CD45RA+/CD45ROâ ânaĂŻve-likeâ cells, which have shown strong recovery in two patients and CD4/CD8 ratios increased immediately following transplant but then declined markedly. NK cells were enriched in the peripheral blood of all patients following transplant.
For Subject 2, a pre-transplant limiting dilution assay revealed T helper cells recognizing both donor and third-party PBMCs. However, the anti-donor response was completely undetectable by Day 24, while third-party reactivity persisted.
Conclusion
These results characterize the transient multilineage mixed hematopoietic chimerism and recovery of lymphocyte subsets in patients receiving a modified CKBMT protocol. The observations are relevant to the mechanisms of donor-specific tolerance in this patient group
Creating Charisma Online: The Role of Digital Presence in the Formation of Religious Identity
This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Journal of Contemporary Religion on Publication Date 23-4-19, available online:Â https://doi.org/10.1080/13537903.2019.1585104This article investigates the construction and transmission of charisma through online channels, and its role in the formation of religious identities. Mindful of Max Weberâs observation that charisma inhabits the relationship between a leader and their followers, I argue for a critical reappraisal of the theoretical model in light of the ubiquity in the 21st century of new, virtual forms of social encounter. I focus my analysis on the Christian creationist movement in the USA, and particularly on an influential leader called Ken Ham. Using digital ethnographic methods, I show how Ham constructs charisma online, and how a virtual community forms itself around his charismatic claims. I illustrate how this virtual community intersects with offline worlds, and suggest that the theme park attractions that Hamâs organisation runs (Creation Museum, Ark Encounter) are imbued with deflected charisma by virtue of their association with his online avatar
Risk of Recurrent Arterial Ischemic Stroke in Childhood: A Prospective International Study.
Background and purposePublished cohorts of children with arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) in the 1990s to early 2000s reported 5-year cumulative recurrence rates approaching 20%. Since then, utilization of antithrombotic agents for secondary stroke prevention in children has increased. We sought to determine rates and predictors of recurrent stroke in the current era.MethodsThe Vascular Effects of Infection in Pediatric Stroke (VIPS) study enrolled 355 children with AIS at 37 international centers from 2009 to 2014 and followed them prospectively for recurrent stroke. Index and recurrent strokes underwent central review and confirmation, as well as central classification of causes of stroke, including arteriopathies. Other predictors were measured via parental interview or chart review.ResultsOf the 355 children, 354 survived their acute index stroke, and 308 (87%) were treated with an antithrombotic medication. During a median follow-up of 2.0 years (interquartile range, 1.0-3.0), 40 children had a recurrent AIS, and none had a hemorrhagic stroke. The cumulative stroke recurrence rate was 6.8% (95% confidence interval, 4.6%-10%) at 1 month and 12% (8.5%-15%) at 1 year. The sole predictor of recurrence was the presence of an arteriopathy, which increased the risk of recurrence 5-fold when compared with an idiopathic AIS (hazard ratio, 5.0; 95% confidence interval, 1.8-14). The 1-year recurrence rate was 32% (95% confidence interval, 18%-51%) for moyamoya, 25% (12%-48%) for transient cerebral arteriopathy, and 19% (8.5%-40%) for arterial dissection.ConclusionsChildren with AIS, particularly those with arteriopathy, remain at high risk for recurrent AIS despite increased utilization of antithrombotic agents. Clinical history and management recommendations of the smooth muscle dysfunction syndrome due to ACTA2 arginine 179 alterations
Smooth muscle dysfunction syndrome (SMDS) due to heterozygous ACTA2 arginine 179 alterations is characterized by patent ductus arteriosus, vasculopathy (aneurysm and occlusive lesions), pulmonary arterial hypertension, and other complications in smooth muscle-dependent organs. We sought to define the clinical history of SMDS to develop recommendations for evaluation and management.
Medical records of 33 patients with SMDS (median age 12 years) were abstracted and analyzed.
All patients had congenital mydriasis and related pupillary abnormalities at birth and presented in infancy with a patent ductus arteriosus or aortopulmonary window. Patients had cerebrovascular disease characterized by small vessel disease (hyperintense periventricular white matter lesions; 95%), intracranial artery stenosis (77%), ischemic strokes (27%), and seizures (18%). Twelve (36%) patients had thoracic aortic aneurysm repair or dissection at median age of 14 years and aortic disease was fully penetrant by the age of 25 years. Three (9%) patients had axillary artery aneurysms complicated by thromboembolic episodes. Nine patients died between the ages of 0.5 and 32 years due to aortic, pulmonary, or stroke complications, or unknown causes.
Based on these data, recommendations are provided for the surveillance and management of SMDS to help prevent early-onset life-threatening complications
Current understanding of the human microbiome

Improvements in the throughput and accuracy of DNA sequencing of the genomes of microbial communities associated with human samples, complemented by analysis of transcriptomes, proteomes, metabolomes and immunomes, and mechanistic experiments in model systems, have vastly improved our ability to understand the structure and function of the microbiome in both diseased and healthy states. However, many challenges remain. In this Review, we focus on studies in humans to describe these challenges, and propose strategies that leverage existing knowledge to move rapidly from correlation to causation, and ultimately to translation.Many of the studies described here in our laboratories were supported by the NIH, NSF, DOE, and the Alfred P.
