    Catastrophe and Environmental Restoration: Analyzing the Frames and Sources of Oyster Restoration News Stories

    Restoration of oyster habitats is a critical solution to halt the decline of one of the world’s most threatened resources. News coverage about environmental topics, like oyster restoration, is important to local communities that are directly impacted. However, little research has assessed how restoration topics are framed by journalists, nor how environmental disasters may affect framing of news stories for the public. This study employed a longitudinal framing analysis, using the quantity of coverage and social responsibility theories, to examine how coverage of the restoration of oyster ecosystems shifted before, during, and after the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The frames and sources of 763 newspaper articles were assessed, including 18 local newspapers from five U.S. Gulf Coast states and three high-circulation national newspapers. Logistic regression analyses revealed that the occurrence of an environmental catastrophe shifted media focus from environmental frames before the spill to community and economic frames during and after the spill. Stories were dominated by environmental frames (49%) and primarily relied on quotes from resource managers (50%) over all other groups. Local resource users were quoted less than 5% of the time in local articles. Findings provide a foundation for natural resource managers and communication specialists to understand how information about natural resources changes during disasters and reveals the perspectives that are most and least commonly used to frame and define stories about coastal resources and important gaps in coverage

    Living apart together (LAT) relationships are an emerging relationship form typically defined as unmarried couples in a committed, long-term relationship who choose to live apart (maintain separate residences) rather than cohabit or marry (Connidis, et al., 2017). Other researchers have classified married couples who live separately as LATs, as well (Binstock & Thornton, 2004). This profile examines the LAT status of newly married individuals who report having entered a marriage in the last year. We define newlywed LATs as those not living with their spouse for reasons other than marital discord1.     The Iowa Crop Management Database: An Agronomic and Economic Information Recording Tool

    The Iowa Crop Management Database (CMD) is designed to record field-by-field agronomic and economic information for crop production in Iowa. Iowa State University Extension is promoting use of such comprehensive records by producers and crop consultants to improve management decisions and farm profitability. Extension staff can use this information and summaries of these records in educational programs, and to document pollution prevention through refined crop management practices. The CMD program is a relational database designed on a model first developed by Pennsylvania State University. The Iowa version was expanded and developed to include a wider range of information resources needed by Iowa producers as a result of a cooperative effort between Extension, state agencies, and agribusiness organizations. The program can meet record-keeping needs for field-by-field agronomic planning, economic analysis, and regulatory documentation. The CMD program is being widely advertised in Iowa by newsletters, direct mailing, brochures displayed at ISU Extension offices, over the World Wide Web and on local radio stations. ISU Extension field specialists with responsibilities for crop production and farm management have been trained in the use of the program. ISU Extension Agribusiness Education is offering a one day short course to train CMD program users. The course will be held on December 10, 1997, January 14 & 21, 1998 and February 11, 1998

    Chemisorption studies of Pt/SnO2 catalysts

    The low temperature CO oxidation catalysts that are being developed and tested at NASA-Langley are fairly unique in their ability to efficiently oxidize CO at low temperatures (approx. 303 K). The bulk of the reaction data that has been collected in the laboratory has been determined using plug flow reactors with a low mass of Pt/SnO2/SiO2 catalyst (approx. 0.1 g) and a modest flow rate (5 to 10 sc sm). The researchers have previously characterized the surface solely in terms of N2 BET surface areas. These surface areas have not been that indicative of reaction rate. Indeed, some of the formulations with high BET surface area have yielded lower reaction rates than those with lower BET surface areas. As a result researchers began a program of determining the chemisorption of the various species involved in the reaction; CO, O2 and CO2. Such a determination of will lead to a better understanding of the mechanism and overall kinetics of the reaction. The pulsed-reactor technique, initially described by Freel, is used to determine the amount of a particular molecule that is adsorbed on the catalyst. Since there is some reaction of CO with the surface to produce CO2, the pulsed reactor had to be coupled with a gas chromatograph in order to distinguish between the loss of CO that is due to adsorption by the surface and the loss that is due to reaction with the surface
