A prototype system for detecting the radio-frequency pulse associated with cosmic ray air showers

The development of a system to detect the radio-frequency (RF) pulse associated with extensive air showers of cosmic rays is described. This work was performed at the CASA/MIA array in Utah, with the intention of designing equipment that can be used in conjunction with the Auger Giant Array. A small subset of data (less than 40 out of a total of 600 hours of running time), taken under low-noise conditions, permitted upper limits to be placed on the rate for pulses accompanying showers of energies around $10^{17}$ eV.Comment: 53 pages, LaTeX, 19 figures, published in Nuclear Instruments and Methods. Ukrainisch-Deutsche wissenschaftlich-technische Beziehungen

У статті надано аналіз стану української науки за роки самостійності України та фінансування розвитку освіти та науки та порівняно відповідні показники з низкою європейських країн. Так за роки незалежності кількість наукових кадрів зменшилась більше ніж у 5-6 разів, а фінансування науки та освіти в країні складає менше 0.3 % валового продукту. Проаналізовано головні моменти розвитку та перспективи реформи вищої школи України. Освітлюються напрямки співпраці в напрямку двохсторонніх наукових досліджень які підтримуються німецькими фундаціями в наступних роках. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde eine kritische Analyse des heutigen Zustandes der ukrainischen Wissenschaft und Finanzierung zur Entwicklung Hochschulwesen und Forschung gegeben und mit einigen europäischen Staaten verglichen. In der Zeit ab Unabhängigkeit der Ukraine ist die Anzahl des wissenschaftlichen Personals um mehr als 5-6-mal geschrumpft und die Finanzierung von Forschung, Ausbildung und Entwicklung beträgt zurzeit weniger als 0.3 % als vom Bruttoinhaltsprodukt. Darüber hinaus sind die aktuellen Aktivitäten von Regierungen beider Länder in Richtung einer Intensivierung und Verbesserung der wissenschaftlichen Kooperation im Rahmen von bilateralen Projekten in den kommenden Jahren dargestellt

The B -> pi K Puzzle and New Physics

The present B -> pi K data is studied in the context of the standard model (SM) and with new physics (NP). We confirm that the SM has difficulties explaining the B -> pi K measurements. By adopting an effective-lagrangian parametrization of NP effects, we are able to rule out several classes of NP. Radio emission from cosmic ray air showers: simulation results and parametrization

We have developed a sophisticated model of the radio emission from extensive air showers in the scheme of coherent geosynchrotron radiation, providing a theoretical foundation for the interpretation of experimental data from current and future experiments. Having verified the model through comparison of analytic calculations, Monte Carlo simulations and historical experimental data, we now present the results of extensive simulations performed with our Monte Carlo code. Important results are the absence of significant asymmetries in the total field strength emission pattern, the spectral dependence of the radiation, the polarization characteristics of the emission (allowing an unambiguous test of the geomagnetic emission mechanism), and the dependence of the radio emission on important air shower and observer parameters such as the shower zenith angle, the primary particle energy, the depth of the shower maximum and the observer position. Пропонована стаття присвячена дослідженню проблеми інонімів, які, на думку автора, у вісниківському дискурсі І. Франка виконують функцію репрезентантів європейських ментальностей. Предметом аналізу стали грецизми. Зроблено висновок, що Франко-публіцист надавав давньогрецьким менталемам особливого значення у процесі європеїзації української мовної ментальності. Під час знайомства із запозиченими лексемами читачі «Літературно-Наукового Вістника» покликані були осягнути ментальні пріоритети давніх греків. (This article is devoted to the investigation of the problem of inonimies, that, according to the author, function as representatives of European mentalities in herald discourse of Franko. The subject of analysis was hretsyzms. It is concluded that Franko-publicist attached particular importance to ancient Greek mentalems in the process of Europeanization of Ukrainian language mentality. During the acquaintance with borrowed tokens the readers of «Literary-Scientific Herald» were designed to understand the mental priorities of ancient Greeks.
