To provide the appropriate conditions for wound healing, wounds often require a dressing or a clothing from a suitable material. It is expected that these materials have to protect the wounded tissue and enhance the wound healing process. In traditional Chinese medicine egg shell membrane (ESM) knowns as 'phoenix cloth' and have been used to cure for centuries. Creams containing dexpanthenol have been widely used to treat mucous membrane lesions and skin wounds. Electrospinning is a fast and easy way to produce nanofibers. In addition to allow producing scaffolds like extracellular matrix, electrospinning technique is promising for producing drug loaded wound dressings. In this study, with using poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid), PEO (Polyethylene oxide), and PCL (Polycaprolactone) in electrospinning method, we developed a novel bioactive wound dressing formulation with soluble eggshell membrane protein, and dexpanthenol. For this purpose, drug release from the matrix, swelling test, morphological examining with electron microscope imaging and mechanical strength tests with texture profile analyser have been done

Relationship between balance and co-ordination and football participation in adolescents with intellectual disability

    No full text
Balance and motor coordination problems are often seen in persons with intellectual disability (ID). This study aimed to examine the relationship between balance and coordination and football participation in adolescents with ID. The study involved 197 male participants with ID aged between 14 and 19 years (16.22 +/- 2.00), of which 110 (65 mild ID, 45 moderate ID) played soccer in a school team, and 87 (48 mild ID, 39 moderate ID) did not participate in any sport. Balance and coordination skills were evaluated using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, second edition short form (BOT-2 SF). A significant positive relationship was found between all the balance and co-ordination sub-tests and the duration of playing football in the adolescents with ID (p<0.05). Balance and co-ordination scores were significantly higher in both the mild and moderate ID participants, who played football compared with the individuals with ID who did no sport (p<0.05). In adolescents with moderate ID, the difference in the 7th item of the balance sub-test was not significant. The results indicate that football participation and balance and coordination are related in adolescents with mild and moderate ID.C1 [Aslan, Sehmus] Pamukkale Univ, Fac Sport Sci, Denizli, Turkey.[Basakci Calik, Bilge; Bas Aslan, Ummuhan; Erel, Suat] Pamukkale Univ, Sch Phys Therapy & Rehabil, Denizli, Turkey

Value of sport in post-apartheid South Africa

    No full text
This paper draws on a large body of knowledge presented as an initial draft for the ‘Case for Sport’ that was prepared in collaboration with Sport and Recreation South Africa, which is in the process of being finalised. Selected research evidence builds the ‘case’ by showing the significance of sport-related impacts and effects within five domains, namely: nation-building and social cohesion, addressing various aspects of social transformation, health-related benefits, positive educational outcomes and economic benefits. The substantiation of such benefits contribute to the argument of the significance of sport (in the broad sense) in the post-Apartheid South African context (post 1994). The findings support global, regional and national sport-related effects at multiple levels and span different sectors of influence. Main arguments take cognisance of the complexity and contextual realities, and present critical reflections as not to over-estimate the positive effects or uncritical acceptance of findings. © 2019, University of Stellenbosch. Production and characterization of pyrolytic oils by pyrolysis of waste machinery oil

    No full text
The main objective of this work is to propose an alternative method for evaluation of the waste machinery oil which is an environmental problem in Turkey. For this purpose, pyrolysis of waste machinery oil was conducted in a tubular reactor. Effect of the experimental conditions (various temperatures, catalyst type) on the formation of pyrolytic oil, gas, and char was investigated. Nickel supported on silica and zeolite (HZSM-5) were used as catalysts. Properties of the pyrolytic oils were characterized by gas chromatograph equipped with a mass selective detector (GC-MS), gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID for boiling point range distribution), nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR) spectroscopy, higher heating value measurement, and elemental analysis. The behavior of the metals in the waste machinery oil and the pyrolytic oil samples was also quantitatively detected by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis. As, Cd and Cr contents of the all pyrolytic oils were found as <0.05 ppm, while Cu content of the pyrolytic oils varied between 0.3 ppm and 0.61 ppm. Only Vanadium contents of the pyrolytic oils obtained at 800 degrees C (0.342 ppm) and in the presence of HZSM5 (0.57 ppm) increased compared to that obtained by waste machinery oil (0.1 ppm). Lower metal contents of the pyrolytic oils reveal that pyrolysis of the waste machinery oils leads to the formation of environmental friendly pyrolytic oils with higher heating values. Objectives: This study aims to assess the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the ABILHAND questionnaire in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) [ABILHAND-RA (TR)] using the Rasch analysis. Materials and methods: A total 90 individuals (15 males, 75 females; mean age 51.8±10.9 years; range, 20 to 65 years) diagnosed as RA according to the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology were included. The ABILHAND-RA (TR) was used to determine manual ability, while disease activity was evaluated by the use of Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS28). Jamar hand dynamometer and pinch-meter were used to examine grip and pinch strength of the participants. Nine Hole Peg Test (NHPT) and Duruoz Hand Index (DHI) measured hand disability level. Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) was used to assess quality of life. ABILHAND-RA (TR) results were analyzed using the Rasch analysis method. Results: Item 20 was excluded from the 27-item ABILHAND-RA (TR) as 96% of the individuals rated this item as “easy”. The new set of 18 items (7 subtests and 11 items) were found to sustain item invariance and fit to the Rasch model. Significant relationships were found between ABILHAND-RA (TR) and DAS28, bilateral grip strength, NHPT dominant side results, DHI, and NHP. Conclusion: Turkish version of the ABILHAND-RA was found to be clinically valid, reliable, and sensitive enough to be used in clinical evaluations, rehabilitation interventions, and for progression follow-up in individuals with RA. © 2019 Turkish League Against Rheumatism.
